You don’t have to know everything right from the start.  That’s a hard concept to grasp, especially if you’re used to working in your area of expertise day in and day out.

But it’s OK.

I’ve been mentioning that I’m taking 4 different seminar style courses right now… OH my, there’s so much I’m learning – it’s great!

But one particular concept to realize is that you need to let your tribe draw the conclusion.  It’s much kinder than “You can lead the horse to water but you can’t make him drink” – but it’s essentially the same thought.

Lead your audience to your solution -but let them draw the conclusion.  Do you understand the difference…?

We have a solution and a conclusion.  You can tell them they’ll get clean clothes by using your laundry soap, but they’ll draw the conclusion when they test or see it for themselves.

Let them figure it out – give them the information and pause.  Yes… we HATE silence (well, I like silence) – anyway… back to topic.

Provide the information for your tribe.  Let them understand your passion – but do your best to give them the information, to deliver the information, with your experience but from the mindset of their current situation.

What the heck does that mean?

It’s not really dumbing it down – but let’s use that because I can’t think of a better word.

A doctor comes in to tell you the results of your test.  They have gone to school for a long time… they have worked in the field for many years… and they know the test results without hesitation.

However, this does not mean they should talk with you as a doctor – they should go back to that mindset of a patient hearing news for the first time.  When they deliver the message from a mind-set of a beginner, the advanced knowledge will be received much better.

Your credibility and character will earn trust when you are able to share your message and guide your tribe to the solution, but they draw the conclusion.  It’s pretty powerful.

Have you ever watched a performance with an actor and thought, they’re a good actor but you didn’t feel any emotion watching the performance?

How about watching a football game and leaving with a “ho hum” type of feeling?

What about visiting a business, let’s say a car dealership, and you liked the car, but wern’t really excited to purchase… yet a week later you purchased from a competing car dealer?

The reason is passion.

All three scenarios had expertise but lacked passion.  You need to share you knowledge with passion to be remembered and to build trust with your tribe.  It’s the way you stand out.

About two years ago I hurt my Achilles tendon.  It is not easy to heal this type of injury.  Mostly it involves rest and stretching… mine is MUCH better.  But here’s the funny thing, I looked up online for a “cure” – I came across these two doctors who have coined them selves “the two most famous physical therapists on the internet” their video is good and it’s helped me HUGE.

OK

Here’s why I mention it.  You watch the video for a cure to your pain… but you TRUST them because they have passion for their topic.

Think about it… this is health information for an injury and yet, within about 30 seconds you trust them.  That’s remarkable.

Watch the beginning of the video, it’s a great example.

Have you ever had one of those days when you just screw up. Welcome to my last week Sunday.

UGH.

I was mad at myself for this…  The yellow is suppose to be white. UGHHHHHH

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, I have mentioned that I create personalized dog collars. Well, Shyloh, wanted a new collar.

It’s a great vibe collar with a yin-yang.  I created the layout, programmed the machine, and started stitching.

You know what I did… I broke my rule.  I walked away from the machine before double checking the stitch color.  By the time I walked back to the machine, less than one minute, I noticed my error.  And I couldn’t fix it.

I was out of blank blue collars so I needed to ship it.  Today, I received the replacement blank and I was able to recreate it…

This time I did it the right way… well, here’s fun twist.

Do you remember my post Episode 593 – How I Saved 50% by Listening to My Gut – But I’m Still Hungry? I wrote about my drama in trying to buy new back drops for taking photos of my products.  I plan to revamp my website and update the look on my Instagram.

Well… LOOK!  I was able to use Shyloh’s collar and photograph it with the new backgrounds.

This is important because the design of a yin-yang is a great example of my “cute design upsell”

I like to mention my failure, past and update on Subject Matter Expert day because it’s important to keep up your skills and continually improve.

It’s easy to stay complacent.  Especially with technical and design skills.  I mean look at the black background collar.  It’s fine. It works.  It features the product nicely.

But look at the color backgrounds.  They give Shyloh’s collar an entirely different vibe.  The store has a fun, hip, vibe… and as a result your dog will be hip and fun.

Today, elevate your skill level.  Look for that class, read your magazine, take a seminar.  It’s easy to be stale… but the group your leading needs your best.

Are you hungry?  Get ready to eat some problems! YUMMMMM

These are good problems we get to eat!

Nope, they’re not the “good” problems of being too busy or having too much money to spend, they’re the problems of our customers.

Now here’s a fun mind bender.  I’m taking about 4 online marketing courses right now… they are fantastic with lots of different perspectives and I thought this one would be perfect for Subject Matter Expert day.

After all, the goal of Subject Matter Expert Day is to position ourselves as the “go to” for potential customers so they begin the process to “know, like and trust” us.

Well, let’s try the mind bender on for a minute.

What if I said, customers don’t care that you are an expert… they’re just looking for solutions to THEIR problem.

WOAH

That’s a completely different way of looking at the entire customer relationship!  You are simply to be concerned with their problem.  Now, this does not mean you get to forget about the entire positioning of yourself as an expert.

It’s just that you may be concerned with not having the “expertise” that a customer is looking for… for example, you fear that you do not have a degree on a wall.  Well, guess what butter cup, if you have the solution to someone’s problem – they want YOU!

Think about it… You may not have a degree in child development, but… if you have the solution to potty training and at 3 in the morning you have a list of FAQ’s you’ve answered or even offer a download for the top 5 tips to successful potty training, NO ONE cares if you have a formal degree… they just want to quit changing diapers or washing sheets and other accidents.

SO on this Subject Matter Expert day, make sure to continue to seek the ways to be the authority within your industry, just understand the only thing that matters to your customer is that you have the solution to their problem!

Here is the key to your future success:  EAT PROBLEMS.  EAT LOTS OF PROBLEMS FOR BREAKFAST!

Tic Tock… what’s that?  OH it’s time.

I love to hear people when they say, I don’t have time.   Especially when it has to do with strengthening their knowledge.  “I don’t have time to go to classes to learn X” and yet… they have time to complain.  OR better yet, in three years when they reap the benefit of taking the classes to learn X they will STILL have the time to complain.

It doesn’t make sense.

When you want your business to grow you need to market yourself.  We regularly go over this “why” behind this statement, so I’ll review it… we need to market ourselves because people want to do business with people.

Therefore, you need to put yourself out there.  There’s a funny thing that happens when you “put yourself out there” and that is that you automatically become a public presence.

Now… that doesn’t mean an expert.

Let’s look at Hollywood and politics.  I’m not going to use names but why on earth does anyone think that someone who stars in movies has any basis for political guidance.

I guess it doesn’t matter “why on earth” the fact is, they have a voice and they have a stage.  (I ripped that off from my favorite singer/songwriter Kenny Chesney which is pretty amazing because I really like Debbie Gibson, too. It was the 80s)  Back to the quote “voice and stage” – I heard an interview with Kenny Chesney speaking of the hurricanes that hit the islands.

He didn’t know what he could do to help, but he had a “voice and a stage” hummmmmm….

Kinda powerful.

Back to the lame-o stars and politics.  Oh boy, by nature of their work they also have a voice and stage.  They choose to use it for political purposes.

What the heck does this have to do with you and today’s inspiration?  The purpose of your business is to give you the ability to exist and thrive doing something you enjoy.  As such, what happens when that all disappears?

OH chrimmity, not in the morbid sense…  but maybe you’ll get bored.

Then what?

Let’s say you’ve sold Real Estate for 30 years… and you’re burned out.  That doesn’t make the knowledge disappear.  However, if you’ve positioned yourself as a Subject Matter Expert, with a blog and taken the TIME to continually invest in youself, you could “quit” selling homes and start consulting.  OR if you’re a teacher, doctor, sales person, there are so many possibilities for your “after” career

BUT

You need to start now.

Think of positioning yourself as your “spring board” to the next thing… continue to work at what you are doing, but utilize your TIME to invest in yourself so you can SPRING to the next possibility… because you never know when that could happen!

What do you think of when you hear today’s inspiration?  If someone says, “You can be as much of an expert as anybody else.”

ME?

I think Facebook.

Facebook is the stomping ground of the “arm chair quarterbacks of expertise”!  Seriously, more than one time I’ve read comments and had to bite my tongue when I’ve read some of the lamest things!  Like when I’m on my death bed, I’ll be wishing for those minutes back.

But what does this have to do with Subject Matter Expert.

Well, it’s good to join a group or two in your field and creep… you know lurk in the shadows and watch what’s going on.  There is so much to learn by listening to real people that use the product you sell, without being a customer of yours.

I am in a couple boating groups… but here’s the expert thing.

Someone asked a question as to which is more reliable outboard motor, a Yamaha or a Mercury.  I have a tad of experience with this topic.  So as people are chiming in… I said, we rent pontoon boats an all 15 boats have Yamaha 4-strokes.

To which another person that rents pontoon boats in an entirely different part of the country commented, “I rent 14 boats and all have Yamaha 4-strokes”

With these two statements you can easily draw the conclusion that TWO business that want efficient reliable equipment use a whole bunch of one brand – that might be useful information to a new buyer.

So here’s the funny part.  And it’s my “arm chair quarterback of expertise”.  This guy “replied” to our comments, “yeah, but have you driven them” — all you can do is shake your head and chalk it up to… jerks are everywhere.

However… it’s important to share your knowledge when you are positioning yourself as a subject matter expert and groups on Facebook are fantastic.  I have learned a lot, it’s kind of like an ultimate focus group.

Just because you wear underwear does not make you an underwear expert!  Remember this.

Now… why on earth is this my lead?  Because, I was reading a request in an online group about “how do I improve my traffic to my site?”

Backstory… the site was a lingerie site.  Now, the owner of the site was perplexed that “to date” there have been zero sales.  I went to look at it and the site is nice, actually really nice… it looked like many other sites out there.

And that’s the problem.  Most retail sites look like every other site.  There is nothing too spectacular about them.  And with traditional marketing… you’ve got a couple P’s to be aware of… four actually.  They are Price, Place, Product, and Promotion.

SO where does this leave us and the underwear site… well, if it looks like every other site it doesn’t do any of the 4 P’s with excitement.

That’s why Tribeology is critical to “new marketing” – you must be able to cultivate your own customers and transform them into a tribe.  This tribe will have loyalty and buy from YOU… the reason they buy from you is the reason we have a “Monday “C” Character” topic!

If you are selling underwear, you must be an expert at underwear!  You will build a niche among a tribe of underwear loving customers.  You’ll understand fit, fashion, fabric, function, and fun!  You’ll create who your ideal customer is and attract them with your knowledge via a blog, vlog, or podcast.  This really works.

It’s hard to explain to someone that you need to attract traffic in order to build a tribe and yet at the same time the problem is they can’t attract traffic… it’s much like our dreaded “which came first, the chicken or the egg” scenario.

But as you are building and living the 5 C’s… The critical piece you will control is you!  You can continue to educate yourself and share your knowledge AND position yourself as a Subject Matter Expert that customers are attracted to.

So when you find yourself asking the question,  “how do I get more people to buy things from my site?”  Answer that question, by asking this question… “would I actually buy something from my site?”

Be Honest.

Do you want to do a financial transaction or a friendship transaction?

Remember, people want to do business with people, not businesses.  So make sure your expertise is shared on the site and that you personalize the experience for your visitors.
