TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #549 – Follow Me and I’ll Show You How To Use a Milestone for Credibility

QUOTE: “You don’t have to see the whole staircase just take the first step.” MLKing

Monday: Subject Matter Expert

This is a thank you and a post!

I recommend social proof as a great way to build your credibility.  Social proof can come from testimonials.  It can also come from followers.  This arrived in my alerts the other day from WordPress.

It’s exciting to receive notifications… but it’s also exciting to receive them when they look like a badge or an award.

The fun thing with this alert is that it could be used in your “about me” section to boost your credibility.  It could be used in an email… or even a post (like this).

So my dual purpose post is designed to show you how to use a milestone to create credibility AND it’s designed to thank you for taking your time to follow me.

I enjoy writing the blog – but it’s even nicer to see that people find it of interest to follow.  Thank you very much for your support, it’s humbling. 🙂

NOW… another end of year housekeeping note:

We’ve reached the last day of the year…  some infinitypreneurs may be looking for a charity to make a last minute donation to. Here are two of my favorites!

1) Operation Underground Railroad:  Their mission is to rescue victims of human trafficking.  YES, they actually go locate and physically rescue people who are being held in slavery, right now, today.  If the thought of children as sex slaves horrifies you, donate.

2) Mentors International:  Their mission is to provide small loans to entrepreneurs in underdeveloped countries.  And by small loans, the average loan is $283!  When a loan is paid back the entrepreneur can apply for another.  By the way, the default rate is 2.3%, therefore, the donations made are continually rolled over.  They’re doing great work.  Guess what… they also work with Operation Underground Railroad to help mentor rescued victims to help develop a source of income!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #543 – You Are To Your Business as Santa is to His.

“One of the keys to achieving huge success in your life is have fun!”

Monday: Subject Matter Expert

Guess What… I’m going to do a reprint today!  I wrote this article last year, 2017, because Christmas fell on Subject Matter Expert Day.  Well, after re-read… I wanted to share it again, it helps us understand the importance of Subject Matter Expert Status.

hohoho.

reprint: 12/25/2017

Episode #272 – Is Santa a Subject Matter Expert?

Merry Christmas!  Since Christmas is on a Monday, and Monday is our Subject Matter Expert Day, I thought, who better to explore, as a Subject Matter Expert, than Santa??!!  Now, before I get started… I have insight on this topic.

Back in the day, on my winter breaks from college, I was a Santa’s Helper … he’s a nice guy… always happy or “Jolly”.  Seeing as how Santa has been up all night delivering presents, I’m not going to call him for an interview.  Instead, I’m going to rely on my observations for his Subject Matter Expert status.

You might say, “OF COURSE SANTA IS A SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT”… but is he? He is a nice guy, heck, I ran into him at the bar on Saturday night.  BUT, does he have strong Subject Matter Expert skills?

Let’s find out.

A Subject Matter Expert shows strength and leadership in the following six areas: Influencer, Network, Ambassador, Honors, Study, and Credentials.  To be a Subject Matter Expert just remember the acronym INAHSC or everything you learned about being a Subject Matter Expert you learned by being “In A HS Clique (INAHSC)”

So how does Santa measure up on our INAHSC scale?

Before we start… we must know what we are measuring.  Otherwise the obvious, “OF COURSE Santa is a Subject Matter Expert” is blurted out.  But really what is Santa’s mission statement?  I looked on Wikipedia and their opening line goes something like, “Santa is a legendary figure that is said to bring toys to good/nice children on Christmas Eve.”

Sounds good to me…
Let’s test it.

Influencer:  Go up to any child and ask, “who makes THE naughty and nice list?”  Santa has a very strong mission statement and clearly, getting anyone, let alone a child, to modify their behavior without actually being in the room… dang, that’s an influencer!

Network : Santa’s social network of parents, not to mention grandparents, aunts/uncles, teachers, older siblings, is amazing, and the guy did this all prior to Facebook!  I think that’s something every small business can learn from.  I mean if Santa can create a world-wide following from his North Pole manufacturing facility without the use of social media, you can certainly create a strong network with all of the modern day tools at your disposal!

Ambassador:  This one I have a little more trouble with because, is Santa an ambassador of the toy industry?  When I think toy industry, I think of Hasbro, FAO Schwartz, etc… I don’t think Santa.  And… I did see him at the bar where the words “naughty/nice” have a different connotation associated with his branding.  The other thing… way back in his early days his suits were blue or green, Coke-a-Cola was the company that changed it to red.  His indecision to stick to one color shows all of us that we need to control our brand or others will do it for us.   Although, I’d have to say, his industry of toy manufacturing has been enhanced by his overwhelming generosity to such a degree that Santa, while representing the toy industry, transcends it to the feeling we get by giving and sharing in all phases of life.  So yes, Santa’s Ambassadorship stared in the toy industry, but has grown beyond that industry,  and continues to grow.

Honors and Awards:  Again, a hard category to judge.  And as a Subject Matter Expert, we need to understand that all categories make up a Subject Matter Expert but not all categories will be utilized in the same manner.  The goal of the Honors and Award category is to emphasize “street cred” or “social proof” for your brand when you are not in person to make the first hand impression.  It’s a way of showing the world that you have authority because a third party endorses you.  So while Santa may not be the recipient of the North Pole Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year, there are many toys out there that are “Mom and Santa Approved”.  So which is better… winning the award or giving the stamp of approval?  I don’t know… but I bet more than half of my readers have a letter in their souvenir box postmarked “North Pole”.

Study:   This one is where Santa is weakest.  Now I’m not going to diss his business model, because it seems to be working for him.  But what’s up with the manufacturing of rocking horses?  He must have one heck of an insurance binder on that division… also, do you ever see photos of the elves with the appropriate eye gear worn while working on the manufacturing line?  Under the “study” area of a Subject Matter Expert you want to stay at the top of trends, patterns, laws of your industry and you do this by reading websites, attending seminars, and in general continuing to learn/grow and implement new ideas.  I never got to hang with Santa in the sleigh to know what audible books he’s got piped into the sled on his world-wide journey… but even recent movies featuring his toy manufacturing plant show it might be time for a safety upgrade because there are lots of conveyor belts that people seem to fall onto to…

Credentials: Within your industry there are credentials.  You should acquire these, whether it’s an industry standard, a seal of approval, or extra learning title.  Credentials can also come from outside parties, so the fact that NORAD tracks Santa’s worldwide journey so we know exactly when to go to bed, says a lot!  The other thing Santa has going for him is that he has the endorsement of parents around the world, they make it a special event to bring their kids to meet him.  OH, and at the beginning of this post, Wikipedia does refer to him as “Legendary” – I don’t think your credentials get much higher than “Legendary”.

So while Santa could improve his work place facilities by implementing some new safety procedures, I’d say he’s definitely a role model for us on how to create Subject Matter Expert status as small business owners.  He’s also a cautionary tale to build and protect our brands, before others engulf and change them.  Think about how many aspects associated with the magic of Santa are not “protected” his name/likeness/image/story/Ho Ho Ho/sleigh… it goes on and on.  However, I’m glad it’s a “legendary story” that’s passed down from generation to generation that we all enjoy royalty-free.

And with that, I hope Santa is getting some sleep.   It’s not just one long night, the last six weeks have been crazy hours for Santa filled with lots of public appearances to maintain his Subject Matter Expert status.  (One fond memory I have of working with Santa was that he had a standing 2:00pm break to get his hair curled at the beauty salon… he wanted to look great for the evening visitors!)  So rest well Santa, we’ll see you next year!

Future Thought.  We agree Santa is a Subject Matter Expert.  But let’s say he picks up his game and starts a blog.  He wants to connect with his fans on a deeper level.  He’s writing and creating tons of content.  He’s got this great reputation and is known worldwide.  What happens when he decides to sell the toy manufacturing plant?  Is the blog an asset of the toy manufacturing plant?  This is the ultimate reason to create your blog outside of your business website.  Especially if you have a job!  When you change jobs or sell the business, you want to take that preexisting traffic with you… imagine going into consulting and starting out with a blog that contains 5 years worth of content and traffic?!?!  Santa should start a blog, but do it under his own personal name and use an RSS feed to his toy manufacturing business so he maintains ownership of the content, domain, and traffic. Just a little FYI Christmas Gift from me to you!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #537 – The Reason Why You Are Cool?

Grab Your Free Gift: The 5 C’s of the Infinity Marketing Machine

“Do something now that will make the person you’ll be tomorrow proud to have been the person you are today.”

It’s Monday! Time for Subject Matter Expert Day.   You know, the time we decide that we need to boast wonderful things about ourselves…

Why is this so darn hard?  Maybe it’s difficult to “toot your own horn” because you feel like bragging is something that’s not you.  Well, I’ve said it before, the main reason we need to promote ourselves as a part of our branding is to build credibility.

Credibility is essential to tribe building because people want to do business with people.

This is the funny part of the internet.  It’s transformed the WAY we do business, not just automation… but with relationships.

That’s a crazy thing to think about because on many levels the internet has made things less personal – however, people do not want to do business with businesses like they did pre-internet… they want to do business with people.

That means boasting about what you’ve done.

Now, if you still aren’t “that” person who wants to be a bunch of awards, titles, and expertise… Let’s try a different angle.

How about if you think about how all of these awards, titles, and education make you an amazing person that your “tomorrow self” will be proud of…

Now we’re talking!

Take all of the wonderful attributes that give you social proof to enhance your credibility today so your tomorrow self looks back and thinks, I’m pretty cool. 🙂

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #531 – Why Climb to the Top If You Just Slip on Slime?

Grab Your Free Gift: The 5 C’s of the Infinity Marketing Machine

“Ability can take you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.” ZigZiglar

Monday: Character (Subject Matter Expert)

Have you ever watched one of the real crime shows on TV, not the fiction shows, but the based on real life incidents and thought… “if they just used their skill for good, ugh”

It’s this type of situation that today’s inspiration represents.

You can have all the ability (or skill) in the world and it will accelerate your rise to the top of your industry… but you do need to have character to stay there.

This is why you have crime shows!  🙂  OK, probably a whole bunch of reasons for the crime shows, but not having character is what causes a rapid fall

OR

That really uneasy feeling you get when you encounter someone dishonest (slimy) – you simply do not trust them.  There are times you can’t exactly put your finger on what “it” is… just a feeling.

Here’s the scoop.  The reason I say there are 5 C’s to your Infinity Marketing Machine and emphasize that Character is one of the 5 is that you must build trust.  Your whole goal in transitioning from “one and done” to “infinity” is to get your customers to know, like, and trust you. This transformation will cause you to go from customers to a tribe.

You will never achieve a long term tribe if you are slimy.  Slimy is one of those words that does not fit with trust.  Therefore, you must do everything you can to build trust.  This includes a strong focus on your online character and profiles.

This also includes your actions!  You must adopt an attitude of service. Tribeology is based on serving your tribe… sure you are the “Vibe behind your tribe” but you are also there because they allow you to be.  This is an privilege, cherish it as such.

Tribeology.com – Episode #525 – What is the Reason You MUST Share Your Why?

Grab Your Free Gift: The 5 C’s of the Infinity Marketing Machine

“Positive expectations are the mark of the superior personality.”

Monday: Subject Matter Expert

You must let people know what to expect from you so that they will understand what they are getting when they hire you!  This is the reason you MUST share your why.

The best place to share your “why” is on your About Me page.  Seriously, I’m a believer in sharing your awards, titles, and accolades.  I think this is crucial.

However… what is your why?

WHY are you doing what ever it is from the time you get up till you go to sleep… meaning what the heck makes you YOU?

Our entire goal with Tribeology is to transform our customers from “one and done” to sticking with us until “Infinity” this is ONLY accomplished when the customer knows, likes, and trusts you…

In other words… to know, like, and trust you – they must KNOW you.  You’ve got to share your “why” – this is somewhat unnerving.  After all, if I say, “I’m a chocolate chip cookie expert that loves walking my chubby doodle named Mr. Pancake” are you going to want to read my blog?

Here’s the deal… if you think it’s strange, you are not a good fit for my blog.  I may have won the Best Profit Center Competition two times and increased revenue by $100,000 in 15 weeks at our family business… however, knowing that my dog is overweight and I’m obsessed with chocolate chip cookies, just might be strange to you – therefore, you will not be comfortable in my vibe, and never mesh with my tribe.

Remember, in addition to awards and accomplishments, make sure to share your personality in your About Me sections because the goal is to ATTRACT your ideal clients… because if we are not specific about who we are attracting, we will attract no one.

That’s true!

So… today… go and share the wonder and joy that is you!  Rewrite your About Me like you sat down next to someone at lunch you’ve never met and tell them who you are… first person, conversation style, and yes… you can humble brag.

GO!

Tribeology – Episode #519 – Enhance. Enhance. Enhance.

Grab Your Free Gift: The 5 C’s of the Infinity Marketing Machine

“Dream big and be disruptive. If you are doing the same thing as everyone else, you’ve already failed.” Kendra Scott

Monday: Subject Matter Expert

Are you an expert?  Answer this… are you an expert?  If you answered, “no” then what are you doing in your business?

The way you build a tribe is to become the leader.  You must be the vibe behind your tribe, however, this does not mean you sit among your tribe and emit a vibe… you’ve got to get out in front and lead!

As the leader, I hate to break it to you, but you are the expert!

This is the only way this whole “tribeology thing” works… you must build a tribe and you must be the leader.

The way you can do this is through your own success with awards, honors, titles, education, experience and knowledge.  BUT, keeping it a secret will not help you lead.

Get your “leadership resume” on your Linked In, website, blog, and other social media platforms.  Do this by building up your “about me” sections!

This is the easiest and most impactful way to show others you are the one they need to “follow”.

Let’s get to this today!  Brainstorm on a paper ALL of the things that make you the best leader of your tribe… and then go to the “about me” sections and enhance, enhance, enhance!  This should take you 15 minutes.  You’ve got 15 minutes, right?

ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode 513 – Why Does Reading Builds Your Subject Matter Expert Status?

Grab my free guide: The 5 C’s of the Infinity Marketing Machine

“Read more, learn more, invest in yourself.”

Monday: Subject Matter Expert

The first “C” of the Infinity Marketing Machine is designed to build your credibility with your customers.  Our goal is to turn customers into a tribe that knows, likes, and trusts you.

It’s an important “C” that is often overlooked.  But, just like a face to face encounter can leave you a tad uneasy if you sense something is shady about the person you talk to… so too can a visit to your website if the person, business, or product seems shady.

The way to less “shady” yourself is to promote the things that make you reputable!

Often this is honors, awards, education, titles… but sometimes it’s as simple as sharing your knowledge.

Today’s inspiration goes miles for building your Subject Matter Expertise.  You must be willing to invest in yourself… this can be as simple as reading trade magazines.  However, it should not be a chore… if it is a chore, you may possibly be in the wrong industry.

Reading is the first aspect… writing and speaking is the next.  You must share your knowledge.

This can be in the form of your blog posts, posts on Facebook, pages on your website, or even the descriptions of your products and services.

There are many ways your expertise is highlighted.  This is why it’s so important to stay current with the latest trends and information.

So the next time someone remarks on how you’re reading a magazine… just tell them you’re building your subject matter expertise!   It’s true… keep current.
