Today we’re looking at the 4th “C” of the Infinity Marketing Machine, Customers.  The concept of customers is easy.  You have people that buy stuff from you.

But… the Infinity Marketing Machine as a part of Tribeology switches your thinking from “one and done” to “infinity”.  This means you want to keep your customers around for a while.

AND this brings me to Newton.  He asked Why.  With a bunch of apples on the ground, he wanted to know why.

Don’t you?  (I’m not a real science type gal so in terms of apple… yeah, I’m part of the millions)

BUT

When it comes to customers… heck yeah!  I want to know WHY.

Why do they stick around and why is it important… I can share with you the magic of creating a tribe… but if you don’t believe in WHY it doesn’t matter.

Let’s explore why on customers.

Most likely you’re tired of spending $$$$$$ on Facebook.  You’ve optimized, tweaked, and studied your numbers, photos, and words for your ads, but your stuck.

Here’s why… they don’t think you give a poo what happens to them once they click “yes” to your ad!  Cold truth… but WHY should they stick around?

Now, compare that to all of the work and effort you must do to build a tribe.  You think about what they find useful, you provide it for them consistently, and you position yourself as an industry leader… then they stay.

SO we have two why’s.  The first Why is why do customers stay… and the second why is why you want them to stay.

They stay because you want them to stay.

As soon as you embrace this… then you can become the vibe behind the tribe.  Believe it or not… you are giving off a vibe.  If your vibe is “I don’t care if they stay” they won’t.  If you give off a vibe that “This is the coolest place to spend time and money” they’ll stay.

The choice is yours.

I was talking to my self earlier today… yes, I do this.  But I was wondering… why do people have a hard time creating consistent content.

That’s when I thought back to when I struggled and what’s different now and I discovered that the difference is not having a clear focus on the core tribe you are trying to attract.

If you know you are attracting women in their 40s/50s for your weight loss product, clearly quoting “Clare is a fat girls name” will bring you a whole troupe of women running to your product because you speak Breakfast Club. But if you are trying to attract women in their 60s you will probably alienate with the same words… and if you go after a group in their 20’s with that quote, oh my… clear room in the safe spaces!

This is why you need to get very clear on the tribe you are attracting.  When you do, creating content becomes fun.

Never be afraid of alienating people.  I’m serious. Some people are terrified to share their personal beliefs because they don’t want to offend anyone.

Here’s a free secret.  If you don’t offend anyone you won’t attract anyone!  True story!

Your goal is to repel people you don’t want and it will attract people you do want.  When you attract people that you do want you will transform into a loyal group of Infinity Customers and this is your Tribe!  It works.

Now go… Repel people.

Let’s Kick Ass!  I could say “kick butt” but I thought you’d all appreciate a little rough and tumble speak.

I changed the key word to butt for my baton group.  But regardless of the word, the sentiment remains the same.  Get up, take action, and do it again.

When it comes to our customers we want to get up, take action, and do it again.  We devote Tuesday to our Content and Consistency topic which helps us provide information for our customers that will build loyalty and transform them into a cohesive tribe.

So then what… you’ve got a tribe…

Well, don’t end up in the “friends zone”.  Gosh, I crack myself up with these analogizes but sometimes they are soooooo perfect.

You are in business to make money. But, tribeology cautions you to provide information and focus on loyalty and trust… so how do you get someone to be an infinity customer?  You have to offer items they want to buy!

Think about your tribe and share product offerings as you would sitting at the kitchen table talking to a friend.  If your friend would sitting there, you wouldn’t start rambling the features of the product, you’d talk about how it benefited you.

Focus on the benefits, successes, or how it changed YOUR life. As I say, products you OFFER to your tribe… not products you SELL to your tribe.

When you have your “kick ass” moment… learn from it… and repeat!  Be careful not to end up in the Friends Zone.

Yesterday I received the highest compliment I could receive…. I was called quirky!   YEA.  I received an unsolicited email from a new customer at my PontoonGirl.com website.

I started this site about a month ago and I’m using the principles of Tribeology to shape and grow it.  My goal is to create a vibe where women who love their pontoon boat can hang out and enjoy the social aspects of it with other “Pontoon Girls”.  This includes entertaining ideas and lots and lots of memory making.

Well, this nice lady sent a thank you email addressing the bag she bought. She went on to… and here’s where I #humblebrag, she went on to tell me she the website is “fun, quirky, informative” and she loves all the boutique items for sale.

DANG!

I could live off that compliment for weeks… well two months… thank you Mark Twain.

My point is this, I did not set out to be quirky – but me, my personality is quirky!  I love to surprise people with odd and random things, therefore, the best part of my tribe is that they enjoy quirky things, too!

Use your personality to it’s fullest advantage and I hope you also receive emails like this, because, darn it – they rock! 🙂

“I really like the pontoon.” Said my boat club member.

I followed up with, “what is your next favorite boat?” My member answered, “I like the boat with the cabin.”

Both were good boats, but I was really trying to figure out what boat to buy next for our fleet and this was not helping me.  It was not helping because the pontoon and the boat with the cabin were among the least used boats in the fleet… so I knew there was a problem with my question.

My boat club member had been with us a couple years and they liked to “go fast” – neither the pontoon boat nor the cabin cruiser were really the type of boats to “go fast” on…

However… after probing their answer just a little more I finally figured out WHY they liked the pontoon and the cabin boat… it’s because they both had sunshade covers!  They liked the boats because they could get out of the sun!!!

That was when we added sun tops to every boat in our boat club fleet and that is when our retention really took off.   Our customers became members and the members stick around now… we had lots of years of “one and done” and we couldn’t really figure out why until we asked them…

Now, much like our inspiration for today… had we simply asked our members what they wanted in a boat… we’d have an entire fleet of pontoon boats or boats with cabins, or we’d have a fleet of faster horses!

When in reality our customers wanted a better riding experience.  Our customers wanted shade from the sun.

It is very important to talk with your customers to find out what they want, but you really have to THINK about what they are answering to make sure you are getting to the root of their problem.  When you solve that problem you will build your tribe and create your infinity customers!

OK — Today we’ll keep it light!  Because by evening’s end the chances of laying on the couch moaning that you ate too much are pretty good…

But I really wanted to share my “social square” for a site of mine… the site is called Pontoon Girl – it’s targeted to women that love boating via pontoon boats!

The tribe building aspect is an oval “cling thing” that contains the words Pontoon Girl and is the beginning of their entry into The Pontoon Girl Lifestyle.

 

Well… today I just couldn’t resist using the clings to create a turkey!

You’ve heard this before, but I’m going to use it as the topic for today.  Collect reviews.

Our marina just “iced over” last Saturday, that means the lake froze.  So it’s kind of a depressing 6 months until the ice melts.  Well… depressing if you hate snow, cold, frozen, everything!  Those that like winter are pretty excited.

They are odd. 🙂

We are often asked, “what do you do at a marina in the winter?” Well… we’re actually really busy.  We are wrapping up the season by making sure that the boats are winterized… but the fun thing is that we are gearing up for summer!

This starts in January (haha) well, it kind of does, the Boat Show is in January and that gets people excited for the upcoming season.  And that’s what we’re doing right now. We’re getting some of our promotional materials ready to go!

Last year we used Shutterfly to make a very nice picture book.  So there’s tip one for today, make a photo book!  It’s a great way to have something for people to flip through at a trade show.

However, last week we had a fun idea.

Let’s see if we can get a Testimonial from someone… anyone.  Today we started reading the words of our customers.

OH MY.  It’s is really fun to read the wonderful things they have said about our staff, services, and facilities.

I’m going to highly recommend this!  This is the first “real” time we’ve ever tried to get testimonials… In addition to words, the customers have submitted photos.  It’s making this book come to life!

Sure, it’s nice to see photos of the boats.  But, when you read the customers stories and see their photos, wow. We are so thankful that they took the time to share these wonderful memories.

So that’s tip two… actively seek the help of your current customers, which should be your tribe, to help you explain the benefit of your offerings.

Be specific.  Know what you are looking for before you ask.

If you are collecting information for a specific product/service, ask the customers with the most first hand knowledge.  Send them an email or pick up the phone and call them. But do not do a generic or blanket request.  You are asking for targeted information and help. Your tribe will help, but be specific and grateful.

You will love the results.
