Sometimes the best advice is the most obvious.

When you are trying to make more money… ask for the sale!  Today I was on the phone trying to sign up someone for our winter boat storage.  I finished my pitch… there was a pause… I said, “would you like to sign up?” and the answer was, yes!

Normally our customers “think about it” and call back… but it’s a good reminder to just ask.

Now here’s a fun little tid bit, the equivalent online is your call to action.

Just like your phone conversation or letter in the mail… ever leave your post or email without a call to action. Consider it your opportunity to “ask for the sale.”

Your call to action might be your “buy here” button – but again… don’t simply leave it up to the text on the button.

Set the stage.  Even something like, “Imagine your life in 5 years if you buy ____” gear it toward your situation, but do something that helps your customer “hear” your suggestion.

It seems silly to mention “The Next Step” but it’s often overlooked!

Here’s my next step for you… today – create a post where you have a “next step” don’t want to make a post — then do it in your phone call.  See what happens!

Friday: Big Money Small Change

This post is both an idea and an cautionary tale.

I stayed at a San Diego, CA, hotel last March.  It was a beautiful hotel with a view to match.  I was attending a conference… now I didn’t feel great.  I was actually battling a head cold.  That really doesn’t have anything to do with the post… I’m just looking for sympathy. (haha)

But…

I walked into the bathroom and they had this sticker sign on the mirror.

The sticker says that, basically, if you “opt in” to their program you’ll get rewarded… $5 food and beverage credit or 500 points per night stayed.  In exchange they skip your room for house keeping.

I don’t know about you but I love staying in hotels.  I love staying in them because they’re clean.  AND that’s because someone wonderful magically cleans my tub, makes my bed, and in general takes care of me!

However… If you stay 6 nights at this hotel and you join their program, you could earn $30 food/beverage credits or 3,000 points.  Quick math shows the 500 points are the better deal with a 3 star hotel earning a free night at 3,000 points…. but I’ll get back to my point.

If you choose to “Opt In” to their program… you don’t get your room clean every night, you do get a food credit… and you know what, you also get to feel good about saving water.

What does the hotel get?

They don’t have to clean your room and they comp you $5.00…  they don’t have to pay someone the 30 minutes it takes to come into your room AND they also don’t have the expense of your water.

Hummmmm

That’s pretty substantial in both labor costs and water costs.

So my head started spinning as to the BIG money savings from this small change.  (or the head cold)  Then I thought to myself, that’s pretty clever.  And I started to run the water for a shower.

Guess what…  All credibility in the program for “saving water” fell on his head when I pulled up the faucet/shower lever.


Can you see it?  Water is running through the spout… FAST.  The shower head is running wide open AND at the same time water is running from the faucet straight down the drain without any purpose.

While the hotel cost saving and earth saving program sounds good on the mirror, when you turn around, and I’m not kidding… had I felt better, I could have taken the photo with the water reflection in the mirror…   But turning around actually dispelled their entire “cost/earth savings” angle.

My recommendation is in line with today’s inspiration.  Lose your fear of being wrong, and having someone like me point it out.  Keep going with these creative programs because it’s a fabulous idea and has great hidden savings… just make sure to look at your obvious cost/water savings, too!

OR it’s money down the drain (hahahaha I just couldn’t resist that!!!)

I had a busy trip to the dog food store.  OK, the fact that we now have entire stores devoted to dog food really puts into perspective how many people have dogs!

When I was a kid we used to just get the 25 pound bag of food at the grocery store.  My dad tells me stories of how when he was a kid their dog just ate whatever table scraps were left from dinner for the family.

Now a days… we have entire stores full of food for dogs.  Process that for a minute.  Wow.

Well, I went to the store and got his hoof, pig ear, treats, chew stick, can food, toppers and bags of food.

Did you catch that… bagSSSSSS of food.  When I was a kid… our dog ate kibble. That was it. One bag, one flavor.

Well, Mr. Pancake is a bit of a pampered “diva”.  This means he gets a bag of lamb or rabbit, or even kangaroo…. the thing that makes me laugh is that one flavor is called “beef” and not cow.  But back to my topic.

I enjoy going back to the dog food store, time and time again.

Why?

I’m in a magical frequent buyer club!

I do nothing to be in it except tell them my name AND EMAIL.

Occasionally I’ll receive a notice… but the big thing is… they log my purchases (I’m assuming that helps them send me Cow kibble fliers)  But seriously, I don’t have to carry a card to get logged as buying a bag of kangaroo kibble.

Now here’s the super crazy part…. I keep going back without receiving ANY discount.

I show up, buy $200 in items, and receive zero discount!

However, in the event, I continue to buy 10 bags of the same size product, eventually I’ll receive a free bag.  This happened today!  WOO HOOO free bag of food!!!

This is the big money small change trick… had they given me 10% off every time it would not be exciting, or drama building!  BUT, getting an entire bag of food, all at one time, for free… is like a BIG DEAL.

It’s a gift, it’s a present, it’s a FREE BAG OF FOOD!

It’s the same discount, 10% off on a single bag is actually saving all the 10% discounts to make one free bag, all at once!

BUT, if I stop buying, I get zero discount!

Loyalty programs are a pretty cool gig… but think about this whole “free bag” concept.

OH and you know what… each time I stop in I’m told how many more bags I need to purchase until “then next one” is free… so they help me”countdown” along the way.

PS: Mr. Pancake is getting rabbit tomorrow… he love rabbit… gonna be a happy boy!

Have you ever thought of how happy you are when a fresh pizza just shows up at your door?  You imagine the pizza, you call the pizza shop, and about 30 minutes later there’s a “ding dong” and the pizza you dreamed about magically shows up.

Every day… this happens over and over and over.

Think of the Infinity Marketing Machine like a pizza ordering machine… BUT… instead of pizza you’re working to create a money machine.

It’s true.

You’re creating a group of followers that trust you and are ready to purchase more and more stuff!  It’s like they want to buy pizza from you over and over!

Here’s the cool thing.  You don’t actually have to create a product.  When you send a newsletter out, use affiliates to control your own advertising.

You should make it relevant… but think about what relevant is.

I can easily think of a scenario where you send your newsletter around the lunch hour and along side your fancy news information you have a photo of yourself eating pizza!  Below the photo is the affiliate link to pizza hut.  Your reader sees you eating the pizza… and soon, the pizza magically appears at their door AND you receive a commission!

Next week… repeat your money machine by offing a different affiliate product in your newsletter!

All I want you to do now is… find the product that your followers will take action on!

Episode #397 – See the Big Secret

If you want to know how to create the biggest change in your business… look small.

Well, just look.

Here’s what I mean… You need to stop and take a look at your business with fresh eyes.  I’m getting one of our logos redone.  I went to get a “T” shirt made that we could sell in our store that was embroidered with the logo.  It was pointed out to me that we needed a new logo.

I didn’t even notice how ugly and outdated the old logo was!  It took someone else with fresh eyes to show me.

That’s what I’m suggesting — either seek someone else to come into your business or visit your website and “secret shop” for you or with you!  Notice the things out of place or that are outdated.  Sure, it’s a little painful and even embarassing… but you need to see the stains in the ceiling tile, the weeds in the sidewalk, the paint falling off the wall, the scuffs along the floor boards, recognize the photos are outdated, the open case of soda in the cooler… the missing stock on the shelf.    Feel bad yet?  Yeah, that’s what our walk through was like about a month ago… haha.

All of these “negative things” add up to create a big picture that your customers experience at your business or website.  This is your vibe. You need to figure out if the vibe you think you are creating matches the one in your head!

This is really one of the biggest money and smallest change things you can do at your business.  Go outside and walk in with the eyes of a customer seeing your space for the first time!

Episode #385 – The Ultimate Check

“Action Takers are Money Makers.”

Today’s inspiration is short and sweet! If you want to make money… take action!

I guess I look at it this way… send an email. Make money.  Seriously, what if you could send an email, come back later, and see money in your inbox? That would be amazing!

It’s possible. But, it takes some work.

You must start by collecting names.  OK, this means you must have a way to capture names.  Great, Check.

Then you must take the names and send regular correspondence.  This has to be engaging and entertaining!  OK, Check.

Next, through the regular correspondence your customers develop a loyalty and in turn transition into a tribe.  Yep, Check.

Finally, find products to sell to the list… and that’s where the money is made! Check, Check.

So… what’s the problem?  Why don’t you have any money from your list?  Well, you understand these four steps… but you’ve forgot the very important first step.  That’s the  take action step!  You need to start!  That’s the ultimate check!

Now…go… start!

Episode #372 – When 7″ Creates a HUGE Change

“It all Seems IMPOSSIBLE Until It’s Done.” Nelson Mandela

We’re getting close to our store “re-imagining” project being done… About 3 weeks ago we entered “what on earth did we get ourselves into” phase… ok we used slightly saltier language!  haha  But you get my point.

We’ve had boxes, shelves, hooks, clutter, and crap everywhere for two months.  It’s been insane.  But now, it’s getting close to being done and it’s actually looking awesome!

The store was built in 1997 and this is the first major revamp we’ve done.  We’re finding lots of “treasures”… soon to hit Craigslist.  We’ve also got some new inventory to take it’s place.  We took the time to think about our NEW customer mix, much due in part to how our Infinity Marketing Machine, and find products for them!  We also have put thought into how they will use our customer space AND what type of experience we’re creating for them.  We can’t wait for summer to see how this works.

Here’s my point.  Go for it!  It will be worth it.  We talked this project and put a plan to together… it’s taken some crazy turns along the way but here’s the fun thing… this has been a lot of sweat equity.  I’m not quite how to term it, but maybe this Friday I’m a little upside down… big change, small money?

ok ok ok — I can’t do that!  It totally ruins my theme…

This entire project started with 7”.  That’s it… 7″!  I needed to get a new desk, that intruded 7″ into our bathroom waiting area… well, the 7″ caused too small of a passage way with our bait cooler… that caused the bait cooler to need a new location… and everything spiraled from there!  So there you go that Small change of 7″ will create a big money makeover!  I’ll know in a couple months… and I’ll report back!
