Woah, what’s up?  Has live turned completely upside down… like a month ago you never would have imagined your life today.

I know I had that moment yesterday at the grocery store.

It was that moment I was standing in line and felt like I was in an unrecognizable country of empty shelves and 6′ distances.  It makes me sad.

But here’s the deal… this is reality, for now.

You are going through your own individual struggle but one thing I will say is leaders need to lead.

As the expert of your business you are struggling to pivot… but there is one thing you have, your audience.

Now more than ever they need to hear from you.

Not in the bargain bargain bargain sense.  They need you to lead. 

Not in the “everything is going to be OK” sense.

They just need to hear from you… think about what they need know.   And here’s the deal… think out of the box.  The biggest asset you have is your tribe and it’s time to share it.

There are lots of businesses in your area and information is a commodity.  Share information.

Often I use examples from our marina…

Right now we are “out of season”, granted we are rapidly approaching the boating season, but right now we can help our area businesses by sharing information with our customers.  We started a restaurant guide to open businesses… and this week we are starting an online group to celebrate the area by sharing good memories.

It’s a simple thing, but it’s a big value to our customers.  They visit our area all summer and care about the businesses, they appreciate the information.

This is a different form of leadership, but very important.

Share your audience.

I actually stopped scrolling to see what the post was all about.  The “spring vibe” really caught my eye.

This is how you make a Big Money Small Change Difference.  Your small change is a photo, that is not expensive… but the big money rolls in because you capture your audience attention AND you’re tribe building.

It’s time to create a theme.

Sure you might not be able to put a giant flip flop into your entryway… but you can do “small” things to help help set the mood of your business?

Start with the driveway… when I visit the doggy day care they have speed limit signs that have a 5 in the middle of a paw… then when you arrive at the front door the shutters have a paw print carved in the wood.

Super simple things that help set the mood.

The flip flop is gigantic, but how silly would it look to have a small flip flop in the hallway… this is a showstopper that screams “it’s vacation time”

The super cute part is the pop top along side the flip flop… remember how I teach that everything you do is to attract your ideal customer to your tribe.

Well, the pop top is not designed to attract kids, they have no idea what a pop top is.

This resort is making people who recognize what the heck a pop top is feel welcome. Which is kinda funny since a pop top in the sand caused a whole lot of cut feet back in the day, didn’t they!

Today – start from the front door and see if you can “set the mood” maybe it’s a clock, figurine, or giant flip flop!

More than once I’ve shown examples of how awesome restroom advertising can be.  You have a captive audience in the restroom and typically it’s a complete lack of competition for messaging.

but this…

Rarely do I point out the bad execution examples… but here you go.

What the heck are you suppose to type in for a URL?

Don’t Do This!

I totally want to use the emoji of the smack yourself in the face.  You want someone to work for your and you use a symbol in a URL?

How many people will look for this as an emoji… or an eyeball… or not even a clue.

The argument can be made that if you’re too dumb to figure out how to apply, maybe you shouldn’t have a job.

But seriously.  It’s “clever” but in the super important part of your ad, don’t mess with it!  Just use text.

When you do this you can actually cost yourself sales, or in this case potential employees.  You want to create “Big Money Small Change” moments… not “Big Money and Zero Results” advertising!

Gone Fishing!

Have you ever been so excited to do your hobby… but you’re just not able to?  Hummmm if that’s too vague, how about when you’re ready to be on vacation and you’re standing in the security line.

Yeahhhhh

Now you get it.

At that moment, people that show kindness or you get a reminder of the happiness you’ll receive when you arrive on vacation, life instantly feels better.

Well…. Look at this cool idea!

I was at a bait shop recently and instead of having the cards of lures on pegboard or spinning displays, they chose to hang them up on the corkboard wall with staples.

This made it super easy to see what inventory was available to buy and what was sold.

The neat part was that this company chose to give that “moment on the water” feeling for the fisherman shopping for lures instead of boating.

Instead of a blank square where there used to be a lure, they wrote “Gone Fishing” – it  could have said “sold out” – but instead they humanized the lures with two simple words, “gone fishing”.

Look for ways you can turn a “sold out” disappointment into a “gone fishing” anticipation moment!

The fun of today’s post is thinking about the Big Bad Wolf.  If we look at the quote there’s the motivational message of, don’t let fear make your mind run wild.

It’s a great message.

You need to be cautious that you don’t let fear get the best of you and prevent you from doing amazing things!  The wolf may be bad… but he’s not unstoppable.

But now let’s twist this quote and focus on the big bad wolf.

What do we know about the Big Bad Wolf?  Well, he lives to harass pigs and has impressive lung power.

He’s got a strong brand.

You’ve never met the Big Bad Wolf and yet you’re afraid of him.  But while you’re afraid of him, please recognize, he’s a Subject Matter Expert.  He goes through life displaying his talent in house demolition… His reputation precedes him and causes you to buy strong construction materials, like brick, if you happen to be building a home in the area.

Ironic, eh? You never think of the Big Bad Wolf as an expert… but he’s got skills AND he markets them pretty darn well.

His skills in home demolition with his brand of “big bad wolf” make you take notice and as today’s quote shows… we have a habit of fearing him much larger than needed, and he’s only a story!

So how do you get you brand to be as strong (but nicer) than the Big Bad Wolf — well, like the wolf, you advertise by featuring your strength.  Get out there and build a reputation through success.

Granted the wolf did it with “word of mouth” and the fear of having your house blown down and getting eaten… I don’t think that’s a great way to build your credibility.  I think a much better way is with reviews!

And… all you have to do is ask your customers.

When a third party endorses you that has actually used your product or service… wow.  That’s a fantastic credibility builder.

This dance studio has a store.  They sell more than dance essentials, like shoes or leotards.  Their style is trendy.  And they love pink!  Well pink is actually the branded color of the studio.

We learned all of this from their post.

AND that’s not even the main point of their post… the post is to let you know that this super cute product that was picked out just for their tribe has arrived and to hurry!

Yesterday I ended my day by balancing our cash register.  I found a penny from 1954.   I started my day on a tour of our local Amazon Fulfillment center… fascinated by the robots.

OK… let me get this out of my system

Robots are freekin cool.

OMG.  If you’ve ever thought about automating your business – then visiting a company tour where they’ve done this is like an amusement park for your mind.

The products come in the door, there are plenty of humans to support the robots — but dang.  They just keep going – I kind expected the Energizer Bunny to pop from around the corner banging that drum!

He did not… but here’s the deal.

The tour was great.

I saw the future… here now.

I saw the possibilities of how to make the future happen now.

AND I also got a photo and water bottle.

My cousin invited me to go on this tour… I joked, the last tour we went on together was in 2nd grade.  Our elementary school was 2 blocks from Tonka Toys… every child received a cute doonbuggy for visiting.

Amazon had awesome water bottles!

OK – not that that’s the reason to visit or even have a tour.

But they built this facility as a showcase for the tour.  Here’s why it’s important for you to learn from Amazon on our Big Money Small Change Day… the first stop on the tour was a hallway.  It was outside a class room.

That’s when the tour guide, Tony, told us about the education benefit for being an Amazon employee… it’s VERY good. Then he told us about the maternity benefit… it also is VERY good.

WHY do they do this?

Because they love their company and those on a tour are potential employees.

The tour is your showcase of your business.

When the tour ended we learned an interesting historical reference and symbolic tribute to the founder that is in every building.  It was cool.

Then we went downstairs and they had a photo booth set up.  This how they encouraged social sharing.

Why?

Because cameras are NOT allowed on the tour.  Yet… they did not miss out on this important social opportunity.

Now… you are not Amazon, so what can you learn from this?

Showcase your business.  You can showcase it online.  Share your history.  Share your future.  Share a gift… and by all means include a way to share it on social media.

This is an awesome idea.  I know… it’s from Disney Springs and to make it more specific… from Cirque Du Soleil.

It’s a world famous show from a world famous location… how on earth can you use it at your business.

Well… if you see something like this what do you do?

You go right up to the design, stop… pose… snap a photo… then post!

Make it easy for your customers to promote your business.  I was talkig to my cousin earlier this week.  She’s at the final stages of building an amazing yoga studio.  She asked me if I liked the design she’s picking out for the main wall.

I said it’s great!

Then I mentioned she should think about adding her business name or logo… it’s a great location for her to film in front of!  You can mark mile stones like birthdays or goals met…  but it makes a permanent location to show consistency in your photos.

The branding helps when people scroll through their feeds…

This is how you use a world famous idea at your location!
