How’s it going?  If you’re like anyone else I’ve talked to today it’s almost minute by minute.

The virus situation has left everyone without a direction.

Well, not everyone.  There are plenty of people that are ready to roll in this type of crisis.

I’m not talking about the people hoarding products.  I’m talking about the people who have been there before…

And by “been there before” I’m referring to a crisis.

It seems like there are two camps. Those that have given up or bought into the bad, and those that are fighting.  I think it has to do more with the stages of grief.  But let’s just say in a time when things are out of your control you need to find something to control.

That’s when the fight in you needs to take over.

One great quote, that you’ve probably hear before, is “the money is in the list” – that means your list of contacts provide you money.

What if you had a list, right now, that you could email and share a special product you made with them.  Something they desire and want to buy…

That is what you are working for… and if you don’t have a list, start!

Take this opportunity to attract people to your business.  Just because you are “closed” or because the phone has stopped ringing… it doesn’t mean that people have stopped buying.

They are just as lost as you and looking for a leader.

Start attracting them by sharing information they desire.  When they get this information you build trust.  I sent an email earlier today to our core customers and it’s sitting at about a 61% open rate… it will grow. 

I’m working on a couple of big projects to help bond this group and build loyalty.  It’s not designed to sell them more, it’s designed to keep them.

If you’re not talking to your customers… someone else will.

Get out there and decide to build the bond.  This will get better, don’t wait until it does, start the chatting now.

Even if it’s just 4 people on your list, just talk to them.  This is a long term plan but it’s a great way to build an asset at your business.

Woah, what’s up?  Has live turned completely upside down… like a month ago you never would have imagined your life today.

I know I had that moment yesterday at the grocery store.

It was that moment I was standing in line and felt like I was in an unrecognizable country of empty shelves and 6′ distances.  It makes me sad.

But here’s the deal… this is reality, for now.

You are going through your own individual struggle but one thing I will say is leaders need to lead.

As the expert of your business you are struggling to pivot… but there is one thing you have, your audience.

Now more than ever they need to hear from you.

Not in the bargain bargain bargain sense.  They need you to lead. 

Not in the “everything is going to be OK” sense.

They just need to hear from you… think about what they need know.   And here’s the deal… think out of the box.  The biggest asset you have is your tribe and it’s time to share it.

There are lots of businesses in your area and information is a commodity.  Share information.

Often I use examples from our marina…

Right now we are “out of season”, granted we are rapidly approaching the boating season, but right now we can help our area businesses by sharing information with our customers.  We started a restaurant guide to open businesses… and this week we are starting an online group to celebrate the area by sharing good memories.

It’s a simple thing, but it’s a big value to our customers.  They visit our area all summer and care about the businesses, they appreciate the information.

This is a different form of leadership, but very important.

Share your audience.

Have you ever done a search?  Probably a silly question because one of the first things you learn to do online is visit Google.  Well, in my case it was Netscape.   I still remember that first search.  I remember thinking this world wide web thing is going to be big.

OK, that was 1996.

But what about now?

Have you ever searched your own company or keywords that your customers are using to solve their problem?  Does your company appear?

Does this matter?

It does matter.  You want businesses to find you!  The ideal is to do just like the example above and use keywords that your customers would select to search.  That means this exercise forces you to get in their heads and narrow down what is important to them and solve that problem.

But how do you solve their problem?

If their problem is they have a boat and they need somewhere to store it in the winter, they are not interested in your summer information about restaurants to boat up to… or are they interested?

This is the reason for content.

Content is the reason search engines exist.  Remember my Netscape encounter.  I sat there and the gal said, “what do you want to know?” implying that I could put any words in and get a result.  And in the early days, you’d actually type one or two words.

Well, if someone wants to know where to store their boat in the winter the ideal thing is to have an article on your webpage that talks about winter boat storage.  But it might also help to have a page of frequently asked questions about winter boat storage with your short answers.  AND then have a page dedicated to the individual answer in detail that links to the FAQ page.

The reason to put this type of content on your website is it gives you even more ways to attract customers.  Remember the a fore mentioned “boat up to restaurants” article.  If someone searches and somehow something in your article attracts winter storage boats, they will land on your main site and if you have the navigation in place it is a one click solution.

Once you have this content tree in place you can use it as links from your email.  Write an email that discusses winter storage and link to the FAQ page. 

You can also create a “post a day” that features one of the FAQ questions each day… then link to your long answer page.

This type of content provides many uses for content that is valuable to your customers so as you are growing your content try this option.

Today: Identify the area of your business you want to grow.  Make an FAQ of all the questions you can think of… then answer the questions.  To see an example, check out the FAQ page for our Boat Club.

Remember, content is the reason people search… so if you are looking to improve your search results you need to improve your content.

Imagine this.  You stop at the restaurant for dinner… and then they have a special on take home ice cream pints!

BUT you have at least an hour before you get home because there are several errands along the way.

What to do?

LOOK AT THIS!

Problem solved.  Bundle a deal with a cooler and ice cream packs! 

What a way to serve your customers.  Yes, you’ll make more money… but you’re also serving them.  They want to bring a treat home to their family, this way you actually help them spoil their family.

Take this idea and figure out how you can make some memories and help your customers use your product or service at an entirely new level.

The easiest way to figure out how this works for your business is to put yourself in the place of the customer and think of how THEY use your product/service.

Maybe you’ll figure out how to keep the ice cream from melting!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 924 – What Do Your Customers Need to Hear From You Today?

In the middle of December I signed up for an online course.  Since it’s Monday I thought this would be an excellent topic.  It’s a “walk the walk” type of story…

Monday is the day we discuss how to increase our social proof.  We want to have our customers “know like and trust us” and an amazing way to do this is to position ourselves as leaders of the tribe.

But to be the leader we must have information to lead… so back to my original statement… back in December I signed up for an online course.

I’ve wanted to create a course to create students of the Infinity Marketing Machine.  I know I teach the concept in this blog… but the importance of registering for a course and going deep into how it can help you at your business is an exciting idea to me.

But, I’m not a classically trained teacher. I’m a marketer.  Sure we tell stories and seek to understand the needs and wants of our customers, but teaching is a different art. Thus, I’ve been stuck in the middle of a bunch of ideas without a focus.

The course I registered for helped to focus the idea, and then I started learning.  Oh my, the instructors are amazing.  I love writing research reports… I know that sounds like a crazy thing, but it’s something I enjoy.

But the missing piece was to get out of my own way and think of what a student would need.  The ability to go back to what made me excited to start out and discover the Infinity Marketing Machine and figure out how to teach that.

Well… the “Infinity Product” was born, sort of, it’s been a busy 6 weeks of messaging, tweaking, and putting together an amazing product to help people really understand how an infinity product will benefit the customers/tribe at their own business.

It’s been fun… but I realized today – while I’m done with a lot of it, I have a whole bunch more to go!

That’s why today’s quote was so much fun. 

“You need a vision that is so big that it is compelling, not only to others, but to you.”

Well… I’m freaked out by my vision, just like you are when I encourage you to create content on a consistent basis.  When teach that you need to lead and continue to do things to build your credibility… it’s scary to put yourself out there. 

But congratulations, I’m happy you are!  So today, put yourself in your customer’s shoes.  Think about what they need from you to see you as a leader.  Do they need to hear a story of your most recent accomplishment, an article you just read, a seminar you attended about a new law or regulation affecting your industry.

What do your customers need to hear from you?

Now give it to them.

Timely, be timely.  In our quote Marilyn tells us to quit calling her every half hour because she’d be ready in five minutes… so she’s late.

Let’s remember this as we create our blog posts…  being timely is how you make the post relevant.

I was scrolling a feed and this one made me stop.

It is a great post!  It was posted on Leap Day. 

A bank may have a hard time advertising or being relevant.  I mean, they can’t run an offer to deposit $20 and we’ll give you back $5! 

BUT

They did a super job of capitalizing on the extra day of the year.  What a wonderful way to point out that interest is compounded daily!  An extra day means more money!

There is something about enjoying the journey.  If you don’t enjoy the journey why do it?

Think about road trips.  I remember a road trip to Florida a couple years ago, I thought I’d hate it… after all, Minnesota is a long way from Florida.

BUT… it was fun.  When the road trip was though about as part of the trip it because a fun activity.

Sure hopping on a plane is easier.  3.5 hours from Minnesota and you are enjoying palm trees… it takes a good 18 hours by car before the first palm tree is seen.  And that can be a hard drive. 

But stopping along the way, just to enjoy the present is an entirely different experience from the lonely highway passing you by.

Keep this thought in mind as you are creating content and building relationships with your customers.

If you are creating content simply to create it and have something to post… it will be a lonely journey. 

But if  you switch your focus to bonding with your customers and creating amazing topics, tips, hints, behind the scenes sneak peeks…they will grow with you and become part of your journey. 

This completely transforms your conversation. 

So get out there and enjoy your journey.  Start with today.

If you had a customer standing in front of you, right now, what would you talk about?  What is happening at your business or what is happening in your industry that they need to know… 

Take that answer swirling in your head and write it out for them… but write as if you are talking to one person, hanging out in your car on the way to Florida… if you’re in Florida… head north. 

But make sure you chat, chat, chat!
