Quote: “Your brand is only as good as the experience you provide from it. If there’s a mismatch, customers won’t trust you.”

 

Have you ever looked for a used car online, found one that you loved with a great price, then you went to see it in person and it had a giant dent in the side?

OK, maybe not a dent – but there were lots and lots of scratches…

How did this make you feel?

Most likely it made you dislike the car, dislike the seller, and have little confidence in how it runs.

Why?

Because there is a disconnect in what you expected from the photos (image) that seller provided and what the real world experience happened to be.

The seller’s brand was damaged by this experience.

You see, the seller does not control the brand… the brand is controlled by the experience the BUYER has.

This is a very important distinction.

Often we think we control the brand.  We don’t.  We control the branding of our business or product, but the brand is controlled by the seller and their experience.

We can say our product is the most amazing performing experience ever… but if it’s broken when the buyer tries…that’s all that matters.

This is why reviews are important.

A customer review is actually a reflection of the brand.  Think about that for a minute.  Your reviews are a great way to see how your brand is doing.

EEK!

You spend a lot of time branding by putting messages, images, and stories “out there” on social media and on email… but the reviews are also “out there” so that’s your report card.

So today, take a look at your branding and your brand and ask yourself, “how are your customer interactions doing?”

Quote: “The first and most important step toward success is the feeling that we can succeed.”

 

I picked this quote as I was standing in the grocery store… well killing time because the song on the speaker was a sweet little song that brought me back to my college days and I haven’t heard it for years!

Do you do this?  Do you hang out on hold, or in the grocery store longer than you should just so you can listen to a song?  Hope so!

But I found the quote and it struck me as totally sharable because I went to my mom’s PT appointment about 2 hours earlier and she rocked it.

Well… not until she faced fear and leaped over it.

Literally.

She was at the bottom of the mock staircase in the middle of the gym.  She stood there with her PT and I could hear her… she was afraid to jump to the first step because she didn’t want to fall.  She had her lower leg amputated about 3 months ago.

She has hopped with a walker, hopped over things with the parallel bars, but never hopped up… onto stairs!

So there she stood

With some encouragement… she jumped.  Then again, and again, and again… she was at the top.  And it was glorious.  She looked powerful – much more powerful at the top than she did for short leaps before at the bottom.

She did it.  Now she was 5′ in the sky on the top of the platform!

I asked her how it felt… she said, “I felt like I was on top of the world” – She had the feeling she could succeed but only because she did succeed.

It’s simple to hear, but exhilarating to experience – even if it was from the side line.

When you think you can’t… just do… and then you will.

When it comes to content, don’t be afraid to try a new topic…

This week I have a presentation on the Clean Marina program we started in our state.  Now full disclaimer, I’m not an environmentalist and have very little interest in the topic.

However…

I have had the pleasure of snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.  And it was AMAZING.

There were colors that I still can’t explain.  And at that moment, I knew it needed to be protected.  I’m not sure how so I’m glad there are others out there that devote their lives to it.

So what does this have to do with content?  Well, I was writing my speech and decided to use the opportunity to discuss how they type of sunscreen you use affects both humans and animal life.

This presentation is for marina owners/operators, a.k.a. we are there to make money.  But I took about 30 seconds to show one co-worker the difference between a chemical sunscreen that allows UV rays to soak into your skin and then block them versus a mineral sunscreen that blocks the UV rays from penetrating the skin.

That’s a game changer.  Simple to understand…

So I took another minute to show that one drop of oxybenzone (chemical sunscreen) in 6 pools can kill coral larvae.  Our snorkel instructor in 2008 went over in great detail the reason only mineral block was used on his boat.

I get it.  Now my coworker gets it.  And I believe a room full of marina operators will get it and that’s who can impact many many people that swim.

Content can bring change, but sometimes you need to get out of your own way to share the information.

Think about your business and one area that is impacted but is usually someone else’s job to educate and inform, and write a quick post about it!

And start using Mineral Based Sunscreens!

The Infinity Marketing Machine is based on a 5C pillar system of Credibility, Content, Consistency, Customers, and Cash.  That’s why I’ve chosen this blog to spend each day on a different “C”.

But you know what’s fun…

When I find a quote that says something very similar… and that’s today’s topic for credibility!

Money is not cash… it’s the “THING” that makes trading two wants equal.  It would be hard to be a dancer that wants gum from the convenience store and find a store owner that appreciates a single leap enough to trade for gum.

However, if the dancer sells tickets to a performance and accepts money for the tickets, the dancer can go to the convenience store to get gum.

Normally I’d use chocolate chip cookies for my examples… but I’m trying to cut sugar out of my diet and I dislike gum.

SO… back to the quote and how it relates to our 5C system.

Money is credibility, credible relationships, character and competence.

When you build your Infinity Marketing Machine – you provide content that attracts a tribe… and you must provide that content consistently to build trust.

This trust is your action and follow through which is your relationship trust and is different from the trust you gain as a Subject Matter Expert based off your character.

But the character trust is what makes your content reliable and worth coming back again and again as you consistently build your relationship.

Eventually the customer turns to a tribe that you offer items for sale that you know they desire and BOOM…that’s when your skills and trust transforms into money that you can use to buy gum.

The dancer showcases all of her Subject Matter Expertise on a stage to an audience willing to trade money for a ticket to see her provide content they will enjoy, but the cash is just the equalizer to allow her to buy gum.  It’s the trust that brings them into the theater.

Build trust and eventually you’ll be able to buy gum.

It’s time to create a theme.

Sure you might not be able to put a giant flip flop into your entryway… but you can do “small” things to help help set the mood of your business?

Start with the driveway… when I visit the doggy day care they have speed limit signs that have a 5 in the middle of a paw… then when you arrive at the front door the shutters have a paw print carved in the wood.

Super simple things that help set the mood.

The flip flop is gigantic, but how silly would it look to have a small flip flop in the hallway… this is a showstopper that screams “it’s vacation time”

The super cute part is the pop top along side the flip flop… remember how I teach that everything you do is to attract your ideal customer to your tribe.

Well, the pop top is not designed to attract kids, they have no idea what a pop top is.

This resort is making people who recognize what the heck a pop top is feel welcome. Which is kinda funny since a pop top in the sand caused a whole lot of cut feet back in the day, didn’t they!

Today – start from the front door and see if you can “set the mood” maybe it’s a clock, figurine, or giant flip flop!

Why are you creating content?  Why do you spend time creating a post… or better… why are you creating an Infinity Marketing Machine?

It’s a lot of work to come up with a theme in the hopes that a tribe will be attracted to what you say… so much so that they will buy items from you.

So why do it?

Well the last part of the statement, of “buy items from you” might have something to do with it…

It’s fun to share information via your email or social media… but it can get very overwhelming to create content without a plan… then the “you know you should do it” guilt starts to overwhelm you… then you quit.

Today’s quote may help put content into perspective for you.

We ant to create content that us useful to our customers and draws them into our tribe… well, what may help is to think about that ONE person and talk to just them.

Talk to one person and change their life.

Create content for one person and change their life.

Make that one person the most important person in your day.  You can do this.

The hard part about putting content out that is the behind the scenes or you struggle and “throw something out there” is that you are creating content for you.  You are doing because YOU feel like you need to.

Switch gears and write something for that one person on your list… sure others will read it too, but it is specifically targeting that imaginary avatar.

Well, bring the avatar to life.

Do it by writing and creating content for them!

Friday night I received a, “… mentioned you” comment from Facebook.

It was from someone I don’t really talk to.  I also didn’t post anything earlier in the day… so it was odd.

I opened the comment and found a woman looking to purchase pageant banners because her normal vendor came up with a problem… she is completely stressed because the pageant is in a week.

Alright, this might seem strange so here’s the backstory.

I competed in baton twirling for 17 years.  Part of every twirling contest is a pageant category or awards that involve pageant sashes.  There are a couple social media sites I run for baton twirlers, and I also create rhinestone T shirts… well, I thought… maybe making pageant sashes would be a great way to provide a service to the baton twirling community.

Last year, I tried.  I made some for one contest… then crickets.

Until Friday.

The gal I made the sashes recommended me in the answer to the woman seeking help with her Facebook need.  Since I was tagged, I hopped on and put the link (MyAwesomeTitle.com) to the sashes I create… then about 30 minutes later, my phone did “cha ching”

We operate in a very interesting commerce era… right now.

Credibility and personal reference is more important than ever.

Lots of people listed who they used in the reply for help on Facebook…. but she chose me.

It’s just something to think about as you work to develop your online credibility and social network.  It really gives purpose to all of that work you are putting into your Infinity Marketing Machine!

You are creating content but this is all about creating a connection.  And it was the mutual connection that got me the order.
