Thursday: Infinity Customer

Quote: “If you think everyone is your customer, then no one is your customer.”

“I have 12,000,000 in my search, is that too many?” asked this woman in our business group.

Yep.  That’s waaaaaay to large.

The reason it’s too large is that everyone cannot possibly be your customer!  If you happen to be creating your searches online you’ve got to narrow the group.

It’s the same in person, except it’s a different reason.

Online:  Online you narrow because it takes several “touches” to get someone to react.  A “touch” is exposure to your message.  Likely it will take 11 views (touches) of your ad to get a reaction – if your group is 12,000,000 it’s very hard to have 11 views to one person!

In-person: However, the in person the reason “everyone” cannot be your customer is because you can’t satisfy everyone.  It’s impossible.

The reason it’s impossible is because of personalities.

Dig deep… if you go to buy a car and absolutely cringe when you think of having to negotiate a price, you would never ever want to have a customer that constantly wants to low-ball you!

When you take the time to identify your ideal customer you will attract customers that mesh well with your personality.

This is the group that will become your infinity customers and ultimately become your tribe.

Now here’s the fun “full circle” of the post… when you develop your ideal customer via the age range, gender, hobbies, interests, etc, you will help yourself in the “online” 12,000,000 dilemma my friend found herself in.  The avatar becomes the way to significantly reduce your search group to a manageable group to achieve your number of “touches”.

How cool is that?

How’s your social campaign doing?  Do you have it scheduled… I mean it’s like an advertising campaign, right…

Wrong.

The fun part about building a tribe is to nurture it.  This is so much different from an advertising campaign.

Advertising campaigns you place ads and look for results.  The best result being an increase in sales.

With a tribe building process you want results.  And you’ll see financial results.  But it’s going to look different from advertising.  You’ll be focused on sending out information that your customers want, and sometimes need without even knowing it.

You are building loyalty that an advertising campaign will never achieve.

The opportunity to turn a customer from “one and done” into an Infinity Customer is a privilege.  You GET the opportunity to talk to them over and over — on a regular basis.

This is when we need to be consistent.

We need to make the commitment to our customer to provide regular content that they want!  This is how we get them to know, like, and trust us!

It’s so much different from advertising…

Just like the quote says, your tribe building efforts are a commitment not a campaign.

I came across this great idea in my feed… and as the quote states, “you’re only one decision away from a totally different life” – so what is this one decision?

Think Differently.

You have a product – but how can you repackage or rebrand and reach an entirely different market?

Look at this example…

The company uses it’s bracelet customizer to make individual bracelets in colors and charms you desire… but this is one step further.

They suggest that the customizer be used to create a bracelet for social causes.  The example is for a fundraiser for a kidney transplant.

It’s an easy way for a product to be used as a fundraiser – but think about the upsell for a minute.  Instead of selling one bracelet – you sell 50.

Hummmmmmmm

That’s how to think differently for a big money small change idea!

If you believe you can. You will.

If you believe you can’t. You won’t.

Now… how about your customers?  How do they know you will or won’t?  I mean the most important thing to your customers is NOT you… it’s them.

It’s the old “what’s in it for me” WIIFM — this means you must give them what they want!

So we’ve reached the obvious part of the blog.

Now the less obvious, how to get them to realize you have what they want… hummmmmmmmm

One hint, today is Subject Matter Expert day.  As such, the way to get them to realize you have what they want is to show them though your expertise.

Expertise, especially by another party, is a confidence builder.

Think about it.

When you make buying decisions doesn’t it help that the product is “product of the year” or that “it won best in show” or whatever.  It’s a winner.

To get to get them to REALIZE you have what they want… is best when you’re endorsed by a third party through awards!

People understand winners.

I mean, if you’re voted “best pancakes in town” or “5 star certified” – it means something, only my husband wonders how many other pancake emporiums were in the competition or if on a 5 star scale there happened to be a possible 15 stars… but that’s a topic for another day. 🙂

For now… attract your customers by winning awards.

On a recent trip to Disney I came across this board full of pins… It’s a Ship’s Wheel designed board to match the theme of the hotel…

The clever part is, it’s to promote the pin trading program of the Disney Parks.

The ironic thing is… there is no sign describing what to do, what the board is for, it just happens to be there.

The only suggestion is that you restrict to two pins per guest per day… I find it clever because you are not required to put a pin on the board to take one, however, that would be the idea of the program.

It doesn’t cost money to take a pin.

Although it is at the entrance to the gift store where you can buy more pins, it’s not in the general area of the pins.

The board is just “there” – it exists.  And people use it.

I love the idea because Disney actually made a product that consumers buy that is fun, engaging, and only used on vacation… I mean you don’t pin trade at your house… just at Disney… and it builds a solid tribe of people who are recognizable throughout your vacation.

But this concept of the free board of pins.  How can you use that?  They do it at the grocery store with free samples…

How can you utilize a free sample at your business… a free guide, a free top 10 list, a free _____ – figure out the way to get people “hooked”!

It’s actually pretty easy

Look at how this yoga studio celebrates Halloween… online…

The message captures your attention – you expect a pumpkin or some variation of a Halloween message.  Since it’s a yoga studio you often see reminders of the core principles of yoga… such as light inside you.  But put them together and you have magic.

Take your messaging to the next level by using a nuance of the holiday that has a personal connection to your business terms or philosophy.

But I also like the text under the message — it’s a specific invite to the studio for chocolate!  The holiday is used for introducing new people to a new product.

Thats an easy way to increase sales for very small costs.

Much of my energy in writing this blog is to help you find your reason “why” to share content.

The reason I focus on this is because when you’re sitting at your desk, alone, with orders, bills, and other things… it’s hard to carve out time to write a post.  You know you should, but it’s also easier to not do it.

Right?!

So one good reason to provide content your customers like… and make it rewarding for you is to understand that sometimes, the information you provide can help the reader make a decision that changes their path in life.  I’m not going to say “change their life” that’s a little far reaching, although it can happen…

But your business is in operation to serve.  Even if you think “it’s just a gift store – this is a little dramatic” – hear me out.

Let’s use the gift store example.  Someone walks into your gift store and buys a baby gift – you are serving them.  They are buying the gift as a memento of their personality to share their thoughts.  You are serving them, especially if you make it convenient by gift wrapping OR suggesting other items (like batteries) – as small as this may be… it’s a big deal that you care.  Have you ever bought a gift or received one and not had the proper batteries. OH so Frustrating!

Back to content.

It can do the same thing as remembering the batteries.

My fall back example is typically potty training.  You have a tired parent at 3am searching for the best (or any) idea to get their kid to stop wetting the bed… they come across your article and info product… you are serving them.  Your ONE good idea can change their journey!

Kind words in a post… a reminder of events this weekend… even your sale.  This all serves your customer!  It’s important to share your knowledge, even when you’re tired, or think the info is not important…

Have you ever been flipping through your social media feed only to get distracted by one post that makes you cry, laugh, or think?

YES!

This is the reason you are providing content.

You are not here to go through a check list… your here to serve!

Today try keeping this mindset as you make the most amazing content filled post you can… imagine the reader and their reaction.
