There I was, watching TV and sure enough… a QR code on the screen.

This is one of those great ideas you can do too.  Creating a QR code isn’t difficult and it can be a very easy to get someone to the exact page you want.

Imagine doing this in your store.  Someone visits and they want to know how to assemble the product, you link to the manufacturer’s instructions on their website.

You could put a link to the specs of the used car you are selling.

This is just a very interactive way to engage your customers without asking them to type in a website address…

But using this on a TV screen is just whole new level marketing.

Basing decision on fear will keep you from growing and will cause you to shrink.  You have goals… keep striving for the goals if do not keep going forward you actually go backward.

Go visit the National Day Of website.  Each and every day you’ll find three to five different celebrations.

I visited the grocery store on March 14 and saw this!

This made me happy.

Remember Pi is the mathematical number 3.14 and has been adopted as March 14.

Celebrate with Pie!

Sometimes learning a new skill is a grind. You are not naturally drawn to it. This is me and learning Japanese. Yes, I speak Japanese. It’s fun to say that, but I’m not really good at it. In fact, someone told me my Japanese was “cute” there is absolutely no compliment in that!

I enjoyed learning Japanese and found it to be a challenge, but it was also a huge sense of accomplishment when I started to understand.

This is also what I thought about print on demand products. It’s a little challenge but once you understand the concept it’s so amazing! You can make money from this skill right when you learn it.

I’m still waiting to make money from my Japanese language skills…. hahahaha

Print on demand is the ability to create digital products that become real products at the moment they are purchased. It’s the coolest concept.

You don’t need to hold inventory to make money! In fact, holding inventory ties up your money. When you change your mindset that this is possible, wow!

It might be hard to grasp… but let’s look at music.

When you download a song, you aren’t actually buying a record anymore… you bought a file. A digital thing.

The difference in a song and a T shirt is how the file is used. The T shirt with your design is created the moment someone pays money and says, that’s a neat design. Again, it’s not like there are a million records waiting for purchase… nope, they don’t exist until you purchase.

So mugs, T shirts, Sweatshirts, socks, bags… this can all be added to your offerings for customers or even in your small store retail space. It’s an amazing way to add a profit center to your business without investing a great deal of money.

It’s very hard to create something new.  I mean entirely new.

We think an iPhone is super cool because it came into our lives in what… like 2007?  But what is an iPhone… it’s a cell phone, camera, alarm clock, stop watch, note pad, video camera, level, flash light, music machine… it goes on and on… but nothing is new, it got rid of old technology and put it’s own spin on useful things!

Use this example in terms of the content you provide.

Nothing is new.

Even in my tribe building ideas… an email list is just a database.  Email is a newsletter.  and sending is just mail… this is nothing new!   It’s just gets rid of the unwanted things and puts a new spin on useful things.

When you create content you can find sourcing all over the internet.  Again, nothing is new but the standout articles put a new spin on useful information.

So using this skill, here’s what I did.  I wrote a free guide. Now I’m a little strange, I like writing research reports. It’s an odd “like” but I do enjoy it.  So I wrote a new workbook about marketing for your small store.

Again, nothing new.

But I was writing it as I had my TV on in the background.  And my channel switched to the Hallmark Channel.

I know, it seems strange that it changees on it’s own, but it does.

So there I am watching a Hallmark Movie, and you know you can’t change the channel because regardless of how cheesy the story line, they mesmerize you!

But I noticed something… they have a “romantic” view of marketing…  I’d say delusional view of marketing.  Who has the opportunity to spend thousands of dollars to host a ball to feature your new chocolate chip cookies?  OK I’m all about the chocolate chip cookies, but not for thousands in promotions.

I say set up an email list and sell the cookies to the tribe.  OR keep the cookies and eat them and sell something else.  (can you tell I’m hungry?)

OK but here’s the point.  It annoyed me this marketing that “always works” – UGHHHHH you know how much skill goes into a good campaign, heck yes you do…. you have created your own campaigns the do not involve a ball!

Have you ever had an amazing customer experience?  Then the follow up question is what made it so amazing…

I’m guessing there may have been words spoken, but it was the feeling you received that made it super special.

It starts with a kind word… now I don’t mean “wow that dress looks amazing…” the wow experience is about genuine care.   I’m kind of a creature of habit.  I honestly could eat the same thing for lunch every day.

My favorite lunch used to be a plain grilled chicken sandwich.  Now it’s hot ham and cheese… but back in the day chicken was #1.

This was a long time ago, but my first job out of college was actually working for the college.  I was an admissions counselor and we were a crazy group.  We traveled from high school to high school to encourage application to our college.  Really… we were sales people.

Anyway, back on topic.

When on campus, it was hard to plan for lunch.  We were super busy in the fall with prospective students just dropping by so grabbing lunch was a “OMG… NOW” type of event.

One day, I went across the road to the normal restaurant and as usual there was a huge line of about 20 people.  The food was cooked fresh and took at least 10 minutes.

But I was really hungry and it was insane standing in line.  (this was before smart phones.  I had a cell phone but we’re talking a peacock blue nokia – it was high tech for it’s day)

So there was nothing to do but wait and wait and wait… well the line took at good 12 minutes… and I almost left.

BUT the people that operated the restaurant were good people.  A family that worked freekin hard.  It was nice to chat.

Anyway, I got to the front… and the “dad” said – “come here” – by passed the entire group… he made my meal as soon as I got in line, all I had to do was check out.

BOOM!!!

That’s how you make a customer feel special.

This is how you build loyalty.

This is how you build your tribe.  Show genuine care.

25+ years later and thinking of this memory it still makes me feel amazing, not only did he know what I would order, but he made it as a surprise.

Get out there an surprise your customers today…. if not all of them, just one!
