How’s it going?  If you’re like anyone else I’ve talked to today it’s almost minute by minute.

The virus situation has left everyone without a direction.

Well, not everyone.  There are plenty of people that are ready to roll in this type of crisis.

I’m not talking about the people hoarding products.  I’m talking about the people who have been there before…

And by “been there before” I’m referring to a crisis.

It seems like there are two camps. Those that have given up or bought into the bad, and those that are fighting.  I think it has to do more with the stages of grief.  But let’s just say in a time when things are out of your control you need to find something to control.

That’s when the fight in you needs to take over.

One great quote, that you’ve probably hear before, is “the money is in the list” – that means your list of contacts provide you money.

What if you had a list, right now, that you could email and share a special product you made with them.  Something they desire and want to buy…

That is what you are working for… and if you don’t have a list, start!

Take this opportunity to attract people to your business.  Just because you are “closed” or because the phone has stopped ringing… it doesn’t mean that people have stopped buying.

They are just as lost as you and looking for a leader.

Start attracting them by sharing information they desire.  When they get this information you build trust.  I sent an email earlier today to our core customers and it’s sitting at about a 61% open rate… it will grow. 

I’m working on a couple of big projects to help bond this group and build loyalty.  It’s not designed to sell them more, it’s designed to keep them.

If you’re not talking to your customers… someone else will.

Get out there and decide to build the bond.  This will get better, don’t wait until it does, start the chatting now.

Even if it’s just 4 people on your list, just talk to them.  This is a long term plan but it’s a great way to build an asset at your business.

Woah, what’s up?  Has live turned completely upside down… like a month ago you never would have imagined your life today.

I know I had that moment yesterday at the grocery store.

It was that moment I was standing in line and felt like I was in an unrecognizable country of empty shelves and 6′ distances.  It makes me sad.

But here’s the deal… this is reality, for now.

You are going through your own individual struggle but one thing I will say is leaders need to lead.

As the expert of your business you are struggling to pivot… but there is one thing you have, your audience.

Now more than ever they need to hear from you.

Not in the bargain bargain bargain sense.  They need you to lead. 

Not in the “everything is going to be OK” sense.

They just need to hear from you… think about what they need know.   And here’s the deal… think out of the box.  The biggest asset you have is your tribe and it’s time to share it.

There are lots of businesses in your area and information is a commodity.  Share information.

Often I use examples from our marina…

Right now we are “out of season”, granted we are rapidly approaching the boating season, but right now we can help our area businesses by sharing information with our customers.  We started a restaurant guide to open businesses… and this week we are starting an online group to celebrate the area by sharing good memories.

It’s a simple thing, but it’s a big value to our customers.  They visit our area all summer and care about the businesses, they appreciate the information.

This is a different form of leadership, but very important.

Share your audience.

OK so why did I write that at the top of my post?

Apparently… voice search has become an important consideration in your content marketing searching techniques. 

I just read an article that said you should put your key words in the first sentence and in the last sentence and every 150 words along the way… that’s waaaay too much trouble. However, I figured I’d try the first sentence AND tell you another tip at the same time.

Did you see how I wrote the same thing two very different ways?

“What are easy content marketing ideas?”

“easy content marketing ideas”

(HA – maybe I will hit the every 150 words)

Ahhhhh — ok the reason it’s important to include a full question is just incase you shout (in frustration) – “Hey Siri, what are easy content marketing ideas?” — you would do this instead of “Hey Siri easy content marketing ideas” we don’t speak that way… we speak in sentences. 

So what are these content marketing tips?

I also just read a great article about top NEW trends in content marketing.  Now I’m not sure if that’s a searchable term… may I should ask, “what are the top new trends in content marketing for small businesses?”

Now, I’m just entertaining myself.

But here’s what number one was… video.  Yeppers that red record button and speaking – especially live is a critical component to content marketing.

I need to do this.

I enjoy writing articles like this to help you learn content marketing and consistency in posting it to build your Infinity Marketing Machine… and more important your tribe!  After all that consistency in content will build trust and you must have trust to bond the customers and transform into a tribe. 

This apparently, well according to the article, is happening with video!  SO… I will get on board and start creating videos.  Ugh.  But they will be awesome!

OK what else did I learn from this Top New Trends in Content Marketing?  (Ha. did it again)

I learned conversational marketing is HUGE.

This is email… messaging… texting… it’s that feeling of an actual conversation.  It’s exactly what we teach here!  I’m so excited you started visiting me… everyday we have a different topic to the blog.

Today is Content and Consistency.  And today’s article is on content… and the content I’m providing is an article on the Top new trends in content marketing that I found in an article I just read.

But other than the shameless keyword packing… I’m actually teaching you HOW to use this type of content strategy (minus the sarcastic comments) to have an impact at your small business.

Ultimately, I’m teaching you how to create content by giving you a content example that is useful to YOU.

Build your Infinity Marketing Machine and create that tribe through email marketing. Even though email has been around a long time, it’s style has been named a top trend in content marketing… this year! Email marketing is about a hip as it gets AND as a small business, it’s levels the playing field for you.

Do IT.

Finally… the last cool topic I’ll mention is the ability to personalize messaging for your customers. 

This is something that a small business can really utilize.  Imagine if you’re in a blizzard… send out your email of photos of your product in a blizzard instead of the standard photos on a shelf.

If it’s 80 degrees, utilize the hot weather theme to the customers in the heat!

Really match the reality of your customer with your message.

This is the ultimate top trend in content marketing for small businesses that I found… it’s an area where you can excel.

So how did I do?  Did I manage to get my key word phrase of, “What are easy content marketing ideas?” in the article in useful ways?

We’ll find out… good luck on using these trends.  I think they are useful and will help with your impact in content marketing!

Um…. your customer doesn’t care.  That’s why I picked the quote, leave your personal problems in the locker room. 

The easiest way to remember this, because sometimes it’s hard… especially when you wake up late, spill your coffee and drop your keys in the snow bank… but remember this, treat your customers with GUEST treatment.

GUEST Treatment for customers is exactly how you would recognize a friend visiting your home…

Greet your guest
Understand their needs
Exceed their expectations
Satisfy their needs
Thank them for visiting

When a friend arrives at your home you open the door and say “hello”, you invite them in, ask if they want something to drink or eat, you give them the food and beverage, ask if they want more, and thank them as they leave.

Same for customers… when a customer arrives at your store, welcome them, find out what they are looking for, share your options, ask for the sale and thank them for visiting.

It’s exactly the same treatment.  GUEST treatment.

It’s easy to remember, easy to practice, and appreciated by your customers.

What is better than going to a restaurant, dining with waitstaff that you already know and having a special holiday experience.

I mentioned this to several people and they all wanted to eat there!  Something is being done right if you need reservations, right?!?

So look at your business and how can you take an ordinary day or holiday normally not celebrated with the business services you offer and how can you get in on the party?

There is a way… just look outside the box.

As you explore your possibilities, just “Think Waffle House” they are already open on a Valentine’s Day – so by adding table cloths and flowers they turn an average day in to a big money small change day!

BTW… I love the Waffle House but I live an entire state away from one so it takes a vacation for me to get there… A couple days ago my husband sent the article to me… This must be the next best thing to going to the Waffle House?  Not quite….  He’s not off the hook that easy and there will be a visit on the next vacation.

First… thank you!  It’s episode 900… wow!  I’m so grateful you’re here with me on this journey !

On to the blog….

It’s very tempting to compete with other people. And you might ask yourself, “what the heck who else would I compete with?”

Well… it’s important to compete with those that you are equal to in skill. I know that might sound strange because it’s always the goal to exceed your best.

HA!

And that’s the key — YOUR personal best.

One great example of this is the story of what my cousin told me about a student in her yoga class. This gal had felt defeated when she couldn’t touch her toes with her legs straight out in front of her while seated.

I mean the woman next to her, who had only been to class three times could touch her toes with ease. She felt, that with all the practice she was doing she was getting no where and she asked my cousin what she was doing wrong.

My cousin answered, “nothing… have you looked at her body, she’s got short legs, you’ve got long legs”

And that’s how simple it is to get lost in competition.

It’s important to compete so you can improve your skill for the benefit of your tribe. But never get lost in the “all about me winning” trap

It’s Monday and I take the time to talk about credibility and positioning yourself as a Subject Matter Expert… yes, this is super important. Awards are the ideal way to have social proof for your tribe.

That endorsement from a third party as “best in class” for your business is HUGE. However, there is a balance. And that balance is not to get lost in the completion of comparison.

You are successful for emphasizing your strengths and not competing with a business in your area of weakness. Focus on your strengths and improve your abilities, every day and you will win!

Have you ever had an amazing customer experience?  Then the follow up question is what made it so amazing…

I’m guessing there may have been words spoken, but it was the feeling you received that made it super special.

It starts with a kind word… now I don’t mean “wow that dress looks amazing…” the wow experience is about genuine care.   I’m kind of a creature of habit.  I honestly could eat the same thing for lunch every day.

My favorite lunch used to be a plain grilled chicken sandwich.  Now it’s hot ham and cheese… but back in the day chicken was #1.

This was a long time ago, but my first job out of college was actually working for the college.  I was an admissions counselor and we were a crazy group.  We traveled from high school to high school to encourage application to our college.  Really… we were sales people.

Anyway, back on topic.

When on campus, it was hard to plan for lunch.  We were super busy in the fall with prospective students just dropping by so grabbing lunch was a “OMG… NOW” type of event.

One day, I went across the road to the normal restaurant and as usual there was a huge line of about 20 people.  The food was cooked fresh and took at least 10 minutes.

But I was really hungry and it was insane standing in line.  (this was before smart phones.  I had a cell phone but we’re talking a peacock blue nokia – it was high tech for it’s day)

So there was nothing to do but wait and wait and wait… well the line took at good 12 minutes… and I almost left.

BUT the people that operated the restaurant were good people.  A family that worked freekin hard.  It was nice to chat.

Anyway, I got to the front… and the “dad” said – “come here” – by passed the entire group… he made my meal as soon as I got in line, all I had to do was check out.

BOOM!!!

That’s how you make a customer feel special.

This is how you build loyalty.

This is how you build your tribe.  Show genuine care.

25+ years later and thinking of this memory it still makes me feel amazing, not only did he know what I would order, but he made it as a surprise.

Get out there an surprise your customers today…. if not all of them, just one!

Remember back to your dating days… that time when you “put yourself out there” to meet someone to spend the rest of your life with…  maybe it worked, maybe it didn’t.

But why didn’t the date or worse yet… why didn’t the relationship work?

Most excuses come down to trust.  Think about it, if some cheated, spent money on the credit cards without you knowing… both are trust issues.

The funny thing is, as we are developing or Infinity Marketing Machine we have 5 C’s to work with – Credibility, Content, Consistency, Customers, Cash… well, the very first C and every Monday we talk about Credibility.

Credibility is your trustworthiness.  Even when we focus on your status as a Subject Matter Expert – at the base we are still focused on trust.

Your trust with your tribe.

If you have a good leader… you will follow.  If you have a bad leader… you question EVERYTHING.

When you have trust, you have loyalty.

Building trust is the effortless way to loyalty.  But that does not mean building trust is effortless.  It’s actually far from it.

To build trust you must have credibility and often one great way to do this is to receive honors and awards from third party sources.

An excellent opportunity is with your local Chamber of Commerce or your local newspaper that runs a “best of” series each year.  Get customers to vote for you or your business.

Another opportunity is with testimonials.  Now, a testimonial is a little different from a review.  They are typically more positive because you’ve asked a customer for their words.  A review… yikes… that is uncontrollable.  Hopefully good, but sometimes not.  🙂

As you get going with your Monday, think about building trust.

Look at your local paper and Chamber of Commerce and find out what awards you might apply for, and then also ask for testimonials from key customers to use in brochures or on your website.

Both ideas are fantastic avenues to great social proof!

Both are excellent resources for building trust.

And trust is the number one way to loyalty… and loyalty transforms customers to a tribe.

How does a happy customer advertise?  The same way an unhappy customer advertises…

Word of mouth, which is temporary… and reviews that are “permanent”

So how do you get the happy customer to speak… you just need to be outstanding.  I mention this because I’ve never really considered myself an advocate of any business.  But I’ll have to say, I did spontaneously shared my thoughts a few days ago.

If you’ve been following a while I’ve written about my mom.  She had quite an autumn, starting with a broken ankle that just got worse, much worse.

Alright.

She’s STILL in transitional care, but, improving daily!

So how can I possibly be an advocate for a medical service? Well, last week I was walking in the hall of her transitional care facility and saw a woman with worry on her face.  She looked, well, lost.  She was simply looking for a nurse.  Not for herself, and not for a patient, she actually wanted a tour.

Her husband was a prospective resident.

She was searching for a transitional facility for someone she clearly loved and after talking with her spontaneously, I realized that she was dropped into the “great abyss” and has zero time to process the accident her husband had a week ago she was trying to swim in the deep end and knew very little about transitional care.

YIKES.  I was there about 6 weeks ago.

The ironic part was her husband and my mom had nearly the same injury and recovery needs. I know I was meant to run into her.

After talking to her, my dad came out in the hallway and he started talking to her.  Then my mom rolled out in her wheelchair and she started talking to her.  In the mean time I went out to my car and came back indoors.  The difference in the woman’s persona was drastic.  Her fear turned to hope.

Ironically, I ran into her yesterday and her husband was indeed admitted.  She was thankful for the inside knowledge.

And that’s why I’m sharing this with you.

I wasn’t prompted by anyone to talk about my mom’s experience at the facility.  I wanted to share the good news.

This isn’t the only time I’ve run into this “share the good news vibe” about the facility. You see, when I’ve told people about my mom… I’ve learned of four other people that have received medical care as a part of their program.  Everyone has the same glowing response.

AND THEY SHARE IT.

Would I write a review online? Gosh, I’m not sure.  I think it always depends on when you receive the request.  If you’re busy, you forget.

But you ALWAYS talk.

This is the important of a tribe.  I don’t think this care facility knows they have created a tribe and how valuable it is, after all my dad used the facility for his knee replacement a year ago and consistently speaks good words.

So always remember, just because they aren’t writing doesn’t mean they aren’t speaking.

AND remember just because YOU haven’t created a tribe doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

You have a tribe.

Your tribe speaks.

Now it’s time rally it to let it know you appreciate it and start leading

Gone Fishing!

Have you ever been so excited to do your hobby… but you’re just not able to?  Hummmm if that’s too vague, how about when you’re ready to be on vacation and you’re standing in the security line.

Yeahhhhh

Now you get it.

At that moment, people that show kindness or you get a reminder of the happiness you’ll receive when you arrive on vacation, life instantly feels better.

Well…. Look at this cool idea!

I was at a bait shop recently and instead of having the cards of lures on pegboard or spinning displays, they chose to hang them up on the corkboard wall with staples.

This made it super easy to see what inventory was available to buy and what was sold.

The neat part was that this company chose to give that “moment on the water” feeling for the fisherman shopping for lures instead of boating.

Instead of a blank square where there used to be a lure, they wrote “Gone Fishing” – it  could have said “sold out” – but instead they humanized the lures with two simple words, “gone fishing”.

Look for ways you can turn a “sold out” disappointment into a “gone fishing” anticipation moment!
