So if you can’t dumb it down you’ve got a problem.  That means no matter what you are selling you’ve got to be able to explain the core essence of it in less than 20 seconds.  If you can’t do that, work on it.

Simplicity is key!

My favorite teacher from high school regularly stops by and makes sure things are going well at the boat yard.  He also works for us during the busy season.  The funny things is, had you told me that in high school, my reality would involve his friendship, I wouldn’t have believed it.  It’s funny how life works.

Well… he’s a marketing guru that does not have cable TV.

He refused to pay for cable insisting it was a fad (that’s a big of a joke, but he never could figure out why someone would pay for TV when you can get it free) – anyway… back to marketing.

As you know I’ve been taking about 4 online seminars to better my skills at this new way of marketing.  Today I showed my teacher a video. Since he doesn’t own cable TV you can imagine what his skills are at the Internet.  He doesn’t use it.

However, he understands marketing, money, and still coaches students.  So he’s willing to learn.  And that’s the important thing… it’s the reason for my topic.

You must be willing to continually learn and teach and do it with such simplicity that a 6 year old can understand.

Here’s why… the highly complex nature of how some squeeze pages, upsells, CPC, posts, and influencer marketing really boil down to product placements, ad placement, sales letters and contact cards.  It’s ALL the same just mixed with technology.

I had a fun conversation teaching my teacher.  I think I made his head spin… haha   And yes, I gave him homework!

Happy Valentines Day!  I found this idea earlier this week.  I thought, this would make a great “Big Money Small Change” topic… then I thought, “Heck!  I can’t wait”

So here you go… When you are trying to figure out how to reach more people with your posts… why not start sharing the love yourself?

You see, I was flipping through my Instagram account and this beautiful bouquet popped up.  Normally, I’m not a big fan of the big Valentines Day – but this caught my eye.  It’s a really pretty picture.  OK I was tired to, so it was easy to comprehend.

 

Isn’t it pretty?  Then I noticed that a company, entirely unrelated to the floral industry, posted it  That made me curious.

So I opened their profile and I found lots of beautiful cakes.  It looks like they specialize in wedding cakes.  And there they have 8 cakes and that lovely bouquet of roses.

Maybe they received the flowers?  So I read the post.  The post was short and talked about getting your flowers from a near by vendor.

OH… now I got really curious.  They didn’t actively tag the vendor, so I needed to do a search – but I found them! And started creeping their profile.

Sure looks like a florist that features some beautiful arrangements.  Annnnnnd there it is, that lovely arrangement of Valentines Day Roses.  It’s their most recent post.

That made me click the link in their profile… why?  OH my curiosity was at a 52 on a scale of 10.. I needed to see this journey through (Ha it was like “back in the day” when we used to surf the net)

But I digress.  The website link went right to the page with the ability to order the Valentines Day Roses.

So what did I learn from this journey?  SHARE THE LOVE!

Be friends with your vendors and business that you compliment.  I can only assume that the bakery and the florist regularly meet onsite at weddings and other grand events.

They have many “cross over” customers so why not help each other.  Develop relationships with your vendors, not just recommending them. Actively post their business.  IT’s OK – remember this is SOCIAL media.  It’s the opportunity to strengthen your bond and build your tribe by positioning yourself as a Subject Matter Expert.

The example of the flowers and the cake is something you can do.  It demonstrates the infinity principle we strive for!  When you volunteer your audience to a colleague you both win.  They receive increased business, you receive increased good-will and expertise with your tribe.

If the florist stuck to their crowd, they would have posted to 92 followers, but with the help of the baker, they increased their visibility by the 135 followers of the baker.  These are people in their location.  It’s an ideal and natural partnership that comes with social proof of the entity posting.

So on this Valentine’s Day – look for and build vendor relationships you can “cross-promote” And “Share the Love”

Do you find at times that you just can’t “handle” people talking?  Maybe they’re in person or on TV… but their message is just, so not you?

Then it’s time to put yourself first.

Here’s the deal, what you surround yourself with is what you become.  If you are around angry people, you become that vibe.  Just like happy people make you feel better, sad people are downers.

But this goes a little deeper…

Think about the messaging you’re surrounding yourself with, does it energize you or deplete you?  If you’re going home every night and you’re exhausted but you don’t really think you should be… maybe it’s the messages you’re bombarded with.  I mean if you’re active, eating well, and sleeping… but you hear stuff that’s “just not you” why wouldn’t this affect you.

You need to recognize this and start seeking out sources that energize you.  Whether it’s books, magazines, TV shows, groups, friends, employees, customers, vendors… oh, and social media.  Unplug (after you read this) and just give yourself a break from “screen time” – hey, and that’s coming from me… someone coaching you on how to integrate social media into your business… hahaha

But seriously, seek out positive messages and watch your world change!

You’ve heard this before, but I’m going to use it as the topic for today.  Collect reviews.

Our marina just “iced over” last Saturday, that means the lake froze.  So it’s kind of a depressing 6 months until the ice melts.  Well… depressing if you hate snow, cold, frozen, everything!  Those that like winter are pretty excited.

They are odd. 🙂

We are often asked, “what do you do at a marina in the winter?” Well… we’re actually really busy.  We are wrapping up the season by making sure that the boats are winterized… but the fun thing is that we are gearing up for summer!

This starts in January (haha) well, it kind of does, the Boat Show is in January and that gets people excited for the upcoming season.  And that’s what we’re doing right now. We’re getting some of our promotional materials ready to go!

Last year we used Shutterfly to make a very nice picture book.  So there’s tip one for today, make a photo book!  It’s a great way to have something for people to flip through at a trade show.

However, last week we had a fun idea.

Let’s see if we can get a Testimonial from someone… anyone.  Today we started reading the words of our customers.

OH MY.  It’s is really fun to read the wonderful things they have said about our staff, services, and facilities.

I’m going to highly recommend this!  This is the first “real” time we’ve ever tried to get testimonials… In addition to words, the customers have submitted photos.  It’s making this book come to life!

Sure, it’s nice to see photos of the boats.  But, when you read the customers stories and see their photos, wow. We are so thankful that they took the time to share these wonderful memories.

So that’s tip two… actively seek the help of your current customers, which should be your tribe, to help you explain the benefit of your offerings.

Be specific.  Know what you are looking for before you ask.

If you are collecting information for a specific product/service, ask the customers with the most first hand knowledge.  Send them an email or pick up the phone and call them. But do not do a generic or blanket request.  You are asking for targeted information and help. Your tribe will help, but be specific and grateful.

You will love the results.

Have you ever been to a super, amazing, fantastic conference?  I sure hope so.  Attending conferences helps you keep on top of your industry OR keep on top of yourself for personal development skills.

But have you ever been to a conference and thought it was great, but can’t remember one thing?

Two tips: keep one notebook at the conference.  In the front make a list 1 to …  flip ahead a couple pages, write the date and presenters name on top… then take notes.  If something super amazing is said… write it on your list at the front of your note book!  This book will be come a great tool in the coming months… (FYI, I just used three of these notebooks for conferences I’ve attended over the last 18 months!)

Next tip:  Right after the conference ends… take one hour (or an entire flight) depending on your time allotment.   And brainstorm ALL of the things you learned and how you can implement them… just free thought!  Use your list from the front of your note book.  Now… make another list of the things you will implement AND do the top three within one week.  (at least start their implementation).

That’s how you can really take some amazing ideas from conference and put them to work for you!

Ho Ho HO!  It’s October 26 and we’re ready for Christmas!

But it’s not even Halloween yet?  Are we rushing it?

Well today is “Big Money Small Change” Day and that means we look for easy ways to make more money that do not cost a whole lot… I like to focus on things you’re doing at your small business, especially things that are done online.

Today, I’m sharing a post from… October 5!  Twenty-one days ago!  Imagine Santa and a big belly howl, “Merry Christmas”!  Along with the “ta da” music.

If you think October 26 is too early for your Christmas Promotions to begin… you are actually twenty-one days behind this ad!

Now, I like the ad… because I like cookies… but look at how cute the cookies are!

The photo is very easy to understand, you see the rolling pin… it matches the pattern in the cookie.  There are absolutely no directions!  The ad implies it’s really that easy…

But for us we are less concerned with the functionality of the product and more concerned with the metrics of the ad!  It was placed October 6th!  It now takes somewhere around 12+ “touches” to get a response out of your customers… meaning they need to see your ad 12 times before it breaks through the “noise” of their world and they take action.

Do you really want to wait until after December 1st… or after Thanksgiving… or After Halloween?

NO — just like today’s inspiration states… If you want opportunities, you’ve got to be ready!  This rolling pin seller is READY!

What’s your system?  I’m referring to getting or staying organized.  What is your system?

Do you have a planner, do you have post it notes, is it all in your brain?

Back up one step and ask, why do you have the planner, notes, or stuff in your brain… it must be centered around a goal.  You’ve gotta get a goal!

If you have a day where you feel like you got absolutely nothing done except a lot of busy tasks… then you started your day without having a goal!

When you wake up in the morning, try this… set a goal for which your day will be measured.  The ultimate goal…. if you accomplish this _______ your day will be a success.

Just to brag a little.  Yesterday, I work up and decided three things that needed to get accomplished and my day would be a success.  BINGO! It was a success.

It’s a good feeling.
