What good are you if you are sick?  Not good at all.

This is one thing that is the hardest thing to understand!  I watched a “live” yesterday – and the gal sells a bunch of stuff.  She’s an entrepreneur, and a darn good one.

She was selling things… and sniffling.  AND she said, “I don’t have any PTO”.

Today – I was listening to a different business group and one gal said, “I’ve started eating healthy and exercising regularly” — this was in response to her report on “what have you done this week?” question.

It’s true though, today’s quote is to inspire you to consider your health and YOU.  You deserve it — today… work harder on yourself than you do on your job!

Your tribe needs you at your best!  UMMMMMM YOU Need YOU at your best!

When you have friends arrive at your home and they ring the doorbell… do you leave them outside?  NO… you open the door and invite them in.

Why?

Because you want to welcome them…

What else do you do?  Take their coat, show them where to sit… offer them something to drink

WHAAAAT?

Of course.  “Would you like coffee?” or  “I have some soda or water… would you like some?”

Right – -you give them something to help make them feel welcome.

Look at what I found – it’s an awesome beverage stand at the office supply store…

It’s a free coffee and water bar.  You just help yourself.

This is a terrific amenity.  It allows you to slow down and enjoy your visit to the store… much in the same way your guest feels in your home.

Get it?

By offering customers a free beverage for their visit you’ve welcomed them into your “home”.

This is total real world tribe building! And it’s all for the price of a cup of coffee.

PS:  Sorry for the delay in posting — my mom broke her ankle last night.  She’s doing well… much better than I would be, it was pretty nasty.   A special thanks to the two men that found her in the yard, gave her immediate care, and got a hold of me… and also to the entire ER staff!  Amazing.

There’s something about a vibe…  look at this post!  It’s a totally cute product and as you flip through your feed, you may zoom past it — but stop.  Let’s focus on what we can learn from the post.

This dance studio has a store.  They sell more than dance essentials, like shoes or leotards.  Their style is trendy.  And they love pink!  Well pink is actually the branded color of the studio.

We learned all of this from their post.

AND that’s not even the main point of their post… the post is to let you know that this super cute product that was picked out just for their tribe has arrived and to hurry!

When you’re looking for a great post idea – look beyond a typical product post — use the post as your opportunity to support and strengthen your bond with your tribe.

Are you afraid?  Does it make you nervous to jump into email marketing?

Fear not!  Just start!

The crazy thing about this quote is that it’s true!  We learn our way as we go along.  Sure we need some sort of plan and training.  I mean there are some technical skills to acquire and laws to understand…

BUT

Much of what we are all doing is an art.  It’s trial and error.  However, with email you own your list. That’s what makes the “trial and error” acceptable.

Rallying and entertaining a tribe is fun because you’re attracting people you want to be around.  But more important is the opportunity you have to work with them tomorrow, the next day and so on…

You control the message you’ll send them AND you control vehicle.  When you create a list for email you’re in control, this is so much different from Facebook… you don’t control Facebook.  If they change a rule, dude, you can be out of business.

When you create an email list you send to everyone… now that doesn’t mean 100% will open, some messages will land in junk boxes… but you “own” the list.  I selected to say “own” in quotations because, while the name is on your list, if you’re hanging out with me we adopt a working philosophy that it’s a privilege to communicate with our list.

Anyway…

My point is this… start to view your list as an ATM.  When you respect your followers and then spoil them by providing great information they desire… dang, you get to offer them products over and over and over.  If you want to raise a little money, offer a product… this really works.

So while you might feel like you’re learning as you go… guess what… you are!

(and that’s OK)

Last Saturday I shared a simple “Try This”.  It was a soda machine that had a sign on it that said “new flavors” that the vendor just wrote in a marker the new options.

Simple, right?

Well… it’s so obvious that it’s often overlooked.

It’s important to keep the simplicity of this story in mind as you set out on building your subject matter expert status!

How is that possible?

The simplest things are often the best understood.  And as a subject matter expert you want to lead your tribe.  They need you!

BUT

They’ll never follow you if they have no idea what the heck you’re talking about.  Remember this.

It’s super easy to get too complicated.  Especially when it comes to your messaging.  Remember to focus on speaking the words your customers understand.  If it helps, talk about the emotion of your product, not the tech specs!

I often catch myself doing this when I talk about our Dry Stack Service.  See… I just did it!  What the heck is Dry Stack?

We’re a marina and instead of keeping your boat in the water at a dock, we store it in a warehouse, on a custom built rack.  We can stack them three high using a really big forklift.  It’s very cool.  But that’s where “Dry Stack” comes from…

Well, knowing the product as well as I do, I realized I was talking about launch times, hours, cleanliness of boat — and no one cared!  Sure, visitors were polite… but what really resonated was what THEY understood.

Family time, memories, and easy.  They call.  They pack their cooler. They get in the boat.  That’s it.

We do the heavy lifting (all puns intended)

When I started talking about all the summer photos that could be hanging on THEIR living room wall.  That’s when I got my message simple, understandable, and relatable.  That’s when THEY started to listen to all of my “complicated” jargon about how the dry stack service works.  That’s when it was important to be a subject matter expert.

But first I had to learn to get simple.
