TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #583 – Marketing with a Twist

Quote: “Take a second look, it costs you nothing.” — Chinese Proverb

Friday: Big Money Small Change

I received TWO emails today letting me know it’s pet dental month.  Ironically, I read these after I gave my dog a dental treat.

The funny thing is that it spurred me to action for my “Big Money Small Change” topic.

My topic has a twist.  The obvious topic is to utilize the “Of the Month” topics for your promotion, special, or post.  It’s a great way to generate ideas and turn your marketing into a party.

But I said my topic for today will have a twist… here it is.

This is a screen shot of what popped up in my email box.  It looks like a great “blurb” “sneak preview” or “short cut” to see what the message actually is all about

But read it.  It’s like a four line classified ad (that shows how old I am) – but look at line four… Flea and tick sale/rebates?  That’s a little confusing.  I thought it was pet dental month.

So here’s your twist.  Double check your email before it’s sent.  You need to send yourself a sample so you can check all aspects.  NOW guess what… I’m guilty of this, and that might be why I’m sensitive to this error.

We used to use email “magic” and type our 4 line classified info into the very top of the email and hide it in the text color of the background, typically white.  Now, you can select these preview sentences.

So that’s twist one, double check.

Twist two… don’t mix messages.  Again… something I’m terribly guilty of.  I am old school with bad habits.  One habit is to put more than one topic in a message… DON’T!  It’s lazy… either lazy that you didn’t sort your people OR lazy in not creating a unique message for different segments of your email.

Back to the normal “of the month”

The cool thing with this email is that they used an infographic – I guess that may be a “twist” but I included the screen shot because, well, if you have a dog, the message is important and interesting!

So your turn to 1) double check before you send… 2) craft only one topic per message and 3) use your “of the month” resources!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #582 – A New Use for a Familiar Technology

Quote “Efficiency is doing better what is already being done” Peter Drucker

Thursday: Infinity Customer

Every other year I need to take my continuing education to maintain my real estate license.  Well, it’s that time of “every other” year!

I’ve been in an online class the past week and I’ve got to tell you, sometimes you come into contact with people that match your message… and this is one for me!

My instructor is the owner of the real estate school and he is a strong believer in efficiency.

Throughout the class time he has shared how he has been incorporating technology in his processes and it’s awesome!

First, the class is taught online.  It’s a live, interactive class that is taught both in person and online, at the same time… This is exactly what I refer to as an “infinity product” – he is able to increase his reach of students without adding more desks or more classes.  He simply offers the class to online students.

Can you do this?

You might think, well I don’t sell a class… I can’t do this.

Well… what about this idea.  He mentioned that many real estate agents now offer virtual tours online.  So instead of sitting an open house, you are able to pull up a video that the agent recorded.  This stream lines the agent’s time by recording once, versus, taking people to the home individually.

Another benefit is safety.  There is no way to attack an agent who is alone with the prospective buyer in a home, if there is no in person tour.  Just something to think about.

So maybe you offer tours or sales of products that you could create one video and utilize over and over.  It just takes some creative “out of the box” thinking.  Sure, video technology has been available for several years, but maybe you’ve never thought to use it in “that” way..

I thought the idea video home tours instead of in person tours was genius.  What a great use of time!  And of course, personal visits are better… but this is a great “first” visit to narrow the list.   Safety and efficiency from one resource. That’s a great infinity product.

It’s fun to take a look at an entirely different industry and see how they use technology.  Often it spurs ideas you can use, too!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #580 – You Want to Create Posts, But Don’t Know When… Here’s the Secret!

QUOTE: “Successful people make sure everything they do in the short term is consistent with where they want to be in the long term.” – Brian Tracy

Tuesday: Content and Consistency

Just like yesterday’s post, I happened to be browsing an online group that I’m in and found a great post.  The person asked a question regarding a new blog.  They don’t have a blog but they want to start one.  However, they’re worried that only one post will look lame.

You may think that… however, it won’t!

This person was wondering if they should post more often, just to get content up and running.  Nah… that may be a nice short term gain.

HOWEVER, we’re here for long term wins.

As I’ve said in previous blog posts, if you post a bunch, let’s say Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, then don’t post again until Tuesday… followed by three in a row then next Monday.  You look like a crazy poster!

You need consistency, you need to teach your audience when to expect you!

This is critical.  The biggest thing is to maintain the schedule.  Now, I post everyday and that’s a bunch – but I used to post once a week and I couldn’t get into the swing of it.  It was hard.  When I post daily, it’s just a part of my rhythm.

Now, that is a whole bunch to ask of someone, and that’s not my intention, I just say, pick your schedule and stick to it.

You see, the date/time is stamped on your post so if you only have one – but it’s within the past week, your visitors will understand it’s a new blog!  If that “one” post is from 3 years ago, they’ll know the blog is dead.

Pick your platform, pick your schedule, and post!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #579 – Are You an Underwear Expert?

Quote:  “Even the Genius asks Questions.”

Monday – Subject Matter Expert

Just because you wear underwear does not make you an underwear expert!  Remember this.

Now… why on earth is this my lead?  Because, I was reading a request in an online group about “how do I improve my traffic to my site?”

Backstory… the site was a lingerie site.  Now, the owner of the site was perplexed that “to date” there have been zero sales.  I went to look at it and the site is nice, actually really nice… it looked like many other sites out there.

And that’s the problem.  Most retail sites look like every other site.  There is nothing too spectacular about them.  And with traditional marketing… you’ve got a couple P’s to be aware of… four actually.  They are Price, Place, Product, and Promotion.

SO where does this leave us and the underwear site… well, if it looks like every other site it doesn’t do any of the 4 P’s with excitement.

That’s why Tribeology is critical to “new marketing” – you must be able to cultivate your own customers and transform them into a tribe.  This tribe will have loyalty and buy from YOU… the reason they buy from you is the reason we have a “Monday “C” Character” topic!

If you are selling underwear, you must be an expert at underwear!  You will build a niche among a tribe of underwear loving customers.  You’ll understand fit, fashion, fabric, function, and fun!  You’ll create who your ideal customer is and attract them with your knowledge via a blog, vlog, or podcast.  This really works.

It’s hard to explain to someone that you need to attract traffic in order to build a tribe and yet at the same time the problem is they can’t attract traffic… it’s much like our dreaded “which came first, the chicken or the egg” scenario.

But as you are building and living the 5 C’s… The critical piece you will control is you!  You can continue to educate yourself and share your knowledge AND position yourself as a Subject Matter Expert that customers are attracted to.

So when you find yourself asking the question,  “how do I get more people to buy things from my site?”  Answer that question, by asking this question… “would I actually buy something from my site?”

Be Honest.

Do you want to do a financial transaction or a friendship transaction?

Remember, people want to do business with people, not businesses.  So make sure your expertise is shared on the site and that you personalize the experience for your visitors.

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #578 – Big Decisions and Color Crayons

Quote: “Idle hands are the devil’s playground”

Saturday: Try This

This is an amazing idea and you’ve got to try it.  Last weekend was the Minneapolis Boat Show.  I was walking around the event and came across this…

It’s one area of a major boat dealer. They took valuable floor space and created a children’s play area.

While boating is a family activity… there comes a time when the kids are bored and distract from “the sale”.

SO… why not make a nice safe area, in the open that mom and dad can keep an eye on them while at the same time being a great place to create wonderful memories.

Look at all of the drawings on the wall!

Not only do mom and dad have a great time at the boat show, but the kids do too.

How can you do this at your business?  Coloring sheets are easy, crayons are inexpensive.

Try This!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode #574 – You are Making Noise… EVEN WHEN IT’S QUIET!

“Progress is often silent – not loud.”

Tuesday: Content and Consistency

Have you ever gone to a sporting event and on the big screen there’s an exciting graphic that reads, “Let’s Make Some Noise!” and the crowd starts to cheer and go crazy?

OH, if we only had that when we write a newsletter. haha

Have you noticed the trend that you send out a newsletter and you hear crickets… lots of empty noise.  You begin to wonder if anything you do makes a difference?

You spend all sorts of time writing a blog post or a full newsletter and you are able, via your stats, to see people open it, but you have NO idea if anything you’re doing makes a difference.

We are all there!

But guess what… last weekend we were working our booth at the Boat Show and received the nicest compliment from a visitor.  She asked, “are you the Tonka Thursday people?”

We started a newsletter about 18 months ago.  We send it out every week.  The focus is on activities happening around our lake for the upcoming weekend.  Some weekends are more difficult than others to come up with content.

BUT

We create a newsletter.

This woman was thrilled to have “found” us at the show.  She has a cabin on the lake so she does not get a local paper.  But she glows with excitement talking about receiving our newsletter.  She said, “I look forward to it.”

The gal that puts in the hard work of creating it was right there in the booth to hear this feedback.  This is a moment you never forget.  The moment you hear your hard work matters to someone on a personal level!

We had another customer that stopped by, and I knew he had read the newsletter because he mentioned a photo we used.  I remarked that he read it… he said, “I always read it”

I’ve even had people that are out of state for the winter (smart people since it’s suppose to be -27 tonight) but they are “snow birds” and it’s a way for them to stay connected to the area and to us!

You are doing valuable tribe building, especially when it’s silent on your end.  Every communication you create builds a bond because you are sharing your vibe.  It does make a difference.

So get out there and make some noise!
