Are you in business for a “reason”?

You may see that question and say, “of course”.  I don’t want to work for someone, I have a passion for my product or service… the list goes on and on.

But is there a bigger why.  Look at this package of dog treats…

“This bag gives to shelter dogs” that’s the most important message on the package.  Sure it’s the Campfire Feast… but when you buy, is it because it’s campfire flavored dog treats or is it because you want to help shelter dog?

Most likely to help the shelter dogs.

This is important because if you are passionate about a “why” then use this dog treat bag as a role model.  They have positioned their “why” as the focal point of the business.

Now… I didn’t buy the bag, I simply took a photo, therefore, I’m not sure how much they give to shelter dogs… or what they give… but the message of giving is special.

This type of messaging is wonderful for attracting and growing your tribe, people who like the WHY are very loyal.

Sell where you are and sell where you are not!  This is the ultimate “try this” type of idea.

The internet is open 24 hours a day… but you are not… but people are people where you are not, thinking about you?

WHAT???? Dumb that down for me.

Believe it or not, in Minnesota, we cannot sell cars on Sunday.  However, people visit car lots.  While we may see a sign in the window describing the car… if you put a QR code you can go directly to a website OR even have a pop up video of the car.

But aren’t QR codes outdated?  Hummmmm I thought so, until I got to go for a long drive, to the other side of the city to pick up a part for our pressure washer.

I walked inside the office building and right there on the front window was an online ordering sign with a QR code!  That’s when I took a photo for YOU.  And something happened… my iphone camera picked up it was a QR code and asked to open the site.  (Still a little creepy that the camera, not a program, identified the QR…)

However…

This is a good thing.  Because it means that you do not have to depend on a customer having a QR program loaded on their phone because the camera will do the “hard work” for you!

Now think like the pressure washer store or the car lot… where are your customers when you’re not there???  And this can be for all sorts of thing, remember it pulls up videos, so how about your brochure, maybe a tour of your property, info in the bathroom.

There are many places you can use this!  Just think of when you are closed, where are your customers!

It’s ironic.  We focus on our weakness and then wonder why we don’t excel.

I’ve always wondered why we do this, especially with tests.  I can remember taking tests in school and the next day you’d get the graded test back… and immediately you’d look at the grade, then focus on all the answers you got wrong.

Why do we focus on this?

I also remember being really terrible at running and having my gym teacher tell me I need to focus on running… at this point I was a State Champion at baton twirling, a sport which requires zero running.  Yet… my teacher wanted me to focus my effort on running.

That seemed crazy to me.  I hate running. I’m not good at it.  I loved baton twirling. I was good at it.  So why on earth would my teacher say to focus on running… that’s dumb.

We need to focus on what we do really well, and pay other people to do the stuff we are awful at.

It’s that simple.  Minus the running, but there are days it would be awesome if you could pay someone to exercise for you! 🙂

But seriously, I think these early years of upside down and backward messaging screws us up later in life when we need to market ourselves as experts.

Think about a job interview… I know you have your own business so you don’t do that… but you have had one in the past.  They are horrible and uncomfortable because you’re there to “sell” yourself as an expert.

Well… we still do this in our everyday representations as a business owner.  You meet with people, share knowledge, and sell yourself!  Therefore, you must step past the shortcomings of your youth, the “work on your weaknesses” and spend time focusing on the “wrong test answers” and instead…

Believe you are an expert, right down in your soul!

You are an expert.

Today, use this new superpower and talk to someone KNOWING you are an expert.

Embrace Your Expertise.

Ho Ho HO!  It’s October 26 and we’re ready for Christmas!

But it’s not even Halloween yet?  Are we rushing it?

Well today is “Big Money Small Change” Day and that means we look for easy ways to make more money that do not cost a whole lot… I like to focus on things you’re doing at your small business, especially things that are done online.

Today, I’m sharing a post from… October 5!  Twenty-one days ago!  Imagine Santa and a big belly howl, “Merry Christmas”!  Along with the “ta da” music.

If you think October 26 is too early for your Christmas Promotions to begin… you are actually twenty-one days behind this ad!

Now, I like the ad… because I like cookies… but look at how cute the cookies are!

The photo is very easy to understand, you see the rolling pin… it matches the pattern in the cookie.  There are absolutely no directions!  The ad implies it’s really that easy…

But for us we are less concerned with the functionality of the product and more concerned with the metrics of the ad!  It was placed October 6th!  It now takes somewhere around 12+ “touches” to get a response out of your customers… meaning they need to see your ad 12 times before it breaks through the “noise” of their world and they take action.

Do you really want to wait until after December 1st… or after Thanksgiving… or After Halloween?

NO — just like today’s inspiration states… If you want opportunities, you’ve got to be ready!  This rolling pin seller is READY!

Do you want to make money while you sleep?  This is the best thing ever.  When you wake up, check your email, and find that you have an order!

This is not new.

Prior to email… we used to walk to our mail box and see envelopes with checks.  Remember the informercial (before they were called informercials) you can make money while you sleep with one small ad!  I know you remember.  Then all you had to do was send in a couple dollars to find out the secret which was placing small classified ads in newspapers around the country.

Now with the internet, this doesn’t seem like a big deal.  But it was a HUGE deal back in the day, this kit included addresses of all newspapers across the country!  (not that I ever bought one of these packets)

OK, I’ll admit it.  I have a rule.  I can write down the 800 number (or nowadays, the website) but I cannot buy anything until morning.  OH my… someone is going to have to ban me from buying things on Instagram. Same thing, the ads are sooooooo enticing!

But back to the make money while you sleep.

Here’s the spin.  How about making “big money” over and over and over.

This is the new goal for a small business.  You need to learn to create an Infinity Product.  This is a product that has no upper limit. It rejuvenates itself.  For example, a downloadable book!  You create it once, and sell it again and again.

The reason I mention it is because it’s fun with something like this sells… you can check out my Best and Simple Social Media Planner that I sell on Etsy.  I love when it sells.  It inspires me to pass this message on to you all!  Work on your Infinity Products… yes, make more than one!

OK – unlike the title, don’t let the chips fall!  Create a new space for them.

The grocery store in my area has been remodeling and look at this… an ugly support pole that was a navigation hazard is now a valuable retail space.

You might not think that such a small area has any use in a big grocery store…

BUT

This is a convenience food area, you know they space, where you run into and grab lunch or dinner!  It’s the perfect place for potato chips.

Take a look around your retail space, is there room dynamic that is “in the way” that could be made into valuable space?

On Friday and Saturday I love highlighting new or cool marketing things I’ve discovered from brands I use or that followers send to me…

Yesterday I opened my mail.  My dog collar arrived in a branded mail bag.  Inside the bag was the collar and a nice thank you post card.

One of my side hustles is that I embroider dog collars!  It’s fun to create a personalized collar for my customers.  I enclose a custom note and wrap the collar so it’s like receiving a gift in the mail.

Well… yesterday I received the gift!

This note was really cute.  But the detail I want you to notice is the lower left corner of the note…

Can you see it?

“We’d love to see your pet! #lupinepet”

Right on the thank you note it has the company hashtag!  Fantastic idea.  Super easy, and quite frankly, it’s free!  I think this is something we all should start doing!
