TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 823 – Why It’s OK to Admit You’re Not an Expert

Tribeology: Learn It. Do It. Profit. Decide who you want to work with, attract them, and sell them things they want to buy! It really is that simple.

Monday: Subject Matter Expert

Quote: “The moment you give up is the moment you let someone else win.”

If you are super competitive you’ll read this quote and think… YES!  I totally get it… never give up!”

But let’s look at this a little different.

I enjoy designing artwork for my promotional items.  In fact, the T shirts you see in the ads under my blog are a perfect example.

But you know what?  It takes me forever to do a design… I tweak and tweak and hours later I’m done.

This is NOT the best use of my time.  So I started using Fiverr.  Now Fiverr is not without issues, but when you are careful and find a great designer, your life becomes easier.

It’s not that I gave up – but I started working smarter. I found that I could find a designer and have 10 designs created overnight instead of myself spending hours on each and every design.

When it seems like you “give up” it is in fact, winning.  This is one of the skills that is the most important to learn. You must “give up” areas where you are not the expert and seek an expert.

Sometimes our topic of Subject Matter Expert doesn’t involve us marketing ourselves as the expert, but rather, relinquishing our lack of expertise to someone who is much much better!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 811 – Give Your Customers Your Passion

Quote: “Passion first everything else will fall in place”

Monday: Creditiblity

What should I sell?  What is it that’s going to make money… quick?

Have you ever said those two things?  Oh yeah… and if you haven’t uttered them out loud my bet is that you’ve said them in your head.

And it does work – let’s say if a holiday is coming up… you know that you’ll have traffic, whether it’s foot traffic or traffic to your website, it makes total sense to offer a product for this anticipated group visiting.

But what about sustained growth and sales?  Product or services to allow sustained or even stable growth is where you should focus your energy.

BUT – it’s not super easy to think long term… you have a business… you’re running it on a daily basis… now throw into the mix a long term focus.  That can drive you crazy. But one way to combat the craziness is to focus on your passion.

This is the ultimate for tribe building.

When you attract a group of people that has a common passion- the products follow!  But you need to provide information that they desire.

For example, at the marina we choose to focus on reasons to use your boat versus oil and filter changes… No one wants to hear about an oil and filter change… but they do want to hear about festivals and parties around the lake that they can boat to.

This makes a big marketing difference.

When your passion matches complements your expertise the rest really does fall into place.  SO, if you’re overwhelmed trying to figure out what to posts.

Take a step back.

Look at your customers and ask what is the passion or drive for using your product and service… why the heck have the found you — then answer that need with the passion you have for your business.

Again, we tell our customers all about restaurants… it has nothing to do with what we sell, and yet… our tribe is very engaged in buying stuff from us.

Give your customers your passion… the rest really does fall in place.

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 804 – The Most Important Person In the Room Is?

Quote: “Never underestimate yourself.”

Monday: Credibility

Do you ever find yourself “underselling” your abilities?  I think it’s pretty common to do this…

Although you may be more comfortable as an entrepreneur discussing one-on-one with a human in front of you.  After all, they sought you out and are standing right there, and you want the sale -so naturally you are able to discuss your strengths.

You’re not Eeyore

Why is it difficult to do this online?  It’s seriously hard to make a post where you declare yourself the authority on “subject A” – right???

It has to do with the overwhelming urge to compare yourself to others.  Seriously.  When we’re online and it’s a wide open audience, not that comfortable “one on one” conversation you have in person…

With the one-on-one you get immediate feedback from conversation and body language – you gain more confidence.  One trick is to talk to “one person” – you need to focus your online talk or writing to, just one person.

The best person is your Avatar, that ideal customer you are working to attract.  Focus your message to communicate with one person.

I can’t remember which TV show I was watching, but they were discussing how to “open the show” – and the new host said, “hello everybody” and the critique was, “just say hello” no one, when sitting alone in their living room, wants to feel a part of a crowd.  They want to feel unique.

USE THIS when crafting your message.

When creating a video, talk to ONE person.  Just one-on-one.

When writing, talk to ONE person.  Just one-on-one.

If you wrap your head around the ONE person concept – you can easily and confidently be the expert for that one person, just like you are in person!  Don’t freak out from the masses you can’t see.  Just imagine the one person that is most important and see them.

See the most important person in your audience and be the expert for them!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 793 – Be the Expert… NOW

Quote: “Of course I talk to myself at work sometimes I need expert advice”

Monday: Credibility (Subject Matter Expert)

Do you talk to yourself?  It’s OK to admit it — I had someone tell me once that talking to yourself is a sign of intelligence.

With that in mind… dang, I’m brilliant! hahaha

But here’s the deal, where do you go when you’re looking for advice?  Books, YouTube, Google, friends, family… lots of places, right?  When you seek this advice is the the foremost leader in the field for which you ask advice? Probably not… but you’re ok with that because you just want an answer, “now”.

Hummmmmmmm

It’s the same thing for your customers!

They come in looking for leadership and advice, your leadership and advice.  This is the fundamental building block of building a tribe.

If you’re apprehensive about publishing content where you position yourself as a subject matter expert in your field, think about the customers you serve.  If you’re willing to help them in a meeting… you can also provide information online and reach an even larger group of people that need your advice!

It’s like this example… back in the day when she had toddlers she was in need of information on potty training.  It was 3am and told me how she paid $5 to download a 7 page guide.   It was worth every penny.

At 3am she had a need for advice and she didn’t want to call anyone at that time of day, but online she was able to find useful information that helped.  The author was not a doctor or teacher… she was better… she was a mom that had potty trained HER kids.

She was the expert my sister needed “now”

This is the expert you are.

There will always be someone that has deeper knowledge or is more “expertity” than you… but YOU are here now… you are the expert now…

Start providing information to help your tribe… now!

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 774 – You’re Only Three and a Half Miles Away from Social Proof

Quote: “Playing it safe is one of the riskiest things you can do.”

Monday:  Credibility

Today – are you going to risk it… or be safe?   You have thousands of decisions to make today, most will be made without much thought.

Think about it – already today you’ve made decisions on what to wear and eat… but were they safe or risky decisions.

What to eat?  Honestly, is this risky?  YES… sometimes there is drama involved in it.  A decision so seemingly easy can be filled with mystery.  You decide to grab a meal, but you don’t like it, but you’re out of money… how will you know if you like it?

It’s probably impossible to know if you will enjoy eating something, after all, you need to consume the product to determine if you like it… so if you don’t like it, it’s too late!

So what the heck do you do?

You rely on Social Proof.  If someone else out there has eaten at the restaurant you want to try… or even the actual dish that you’re debating ordering… someone else that has had the experience can really help determine if it’s for you, too!

Here’s a fun rendition of my husband’s restaurant selection on a recent layover in North Carolina… and yes, he always puts this much effort into restaurants.  Yeah, give me a PB&J and I’m set… for him… this decision is a big BIG deal.

What is the value of social proof? With only 15 hours to spend in Charlotte NC, the decision had to be just right… after all it was one meal.  So here goes…

A simple web search turned up Pinky’s Westside Diner. There were many restaurants on the search, but Pinky’s stood out, why? Well Pinky’s had been featured on the food network TV show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Pinky’s was 3 1/2 miles from the intrepid traveler’s hotel, and he walked there and back. No one ever said my husband is intelligent. He reports that the Asian pork burger and the black eyed pea salad were well worth the effort.

Pinky’s was indeed a “dive” and a foodie paradise. To enhance their social proof and live up to all they hype, the servers could recount hte exact foods featured on the show and had an in depth knowledge of the menu.

Remember, you can “make up” social proof, but if someone is relying on it… then arrives at your business and encounter a different experience, OH BOY – that’s wrong on many levels.  Don’t “make up” proof — instead, celebrate it by advertising it, prominently displaying on your website, mentioning it on your staff T-shirts, and just like Pinky’s did… get your staff to KNOW the knowledge… like the menu items featured on the show!

Not everyone has social proof as terrific as Pinky’s, but we can all emphasize our social proof and make sure the staff can promote it, just like Pinky’s.

His last piece of advice, “Try the Asian pork burger, it’s delicious!”

Social Proof is one of those things that makes a difference.  It’s a tribe builder.

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 768 – The Simple Success of Talking to THEM

Quote: “Complexity is your enemy”

Monday: Credibility (Subject Matter Expert)

Last Saturday I shared a simple “Try This”.  It was a soda machine that had a sign on it that said “new flavors” that the vendor just wrote in a marker the new options.

Simple, right?

Well… it’s so obvious that it’s often overlooked.

It’s important to keep the simplicity of this story in mind as you set out on building your subject matter expert status!

How is that possible?

The simplest things are often the best understood.  And as a subject matter expert you want to lead your tribe.  They need you!

BUT

They’ll never follow you if they have no idea what the heck you’re talking about.  Remember this.

It’s super easy to get too complicated.  Especially when it comes to your messaging.  Remember to focus on speaking the words your customers understand.  If it helps, talk about the emotion of your product, not the tech specs!

I often catch myself doing this when I talk about our Dry Stack Service.  See… I just did it!  What the heck is Dry Stack?

We’re a marina and instead of keeping your boat in the water at a dock, we store it in a warehouse, on a custom built rack.  We can stack them three high using a really big forklift.  It’s very cool.  But that’s where “Dry Stack” comes from…

Well, knowing the product as well as I do, I realized I was talking about launch times, hours, cleanliness of boat — and no one cared!  Sure, visitors were polite… but what really resonated was what THEY understood.

Family time, memories, and easy.  They call.  They pack their cooler. They get in the boat.  That’s it.

We do the heavy lifting (all puns intended)

When I started talking about all the summer photos that could be hanging on THEIR living room wall.  That’s when I got my message simple, understandable, and relatable.  That’s when THEY started to listen to all of my “complicated” jargon about how the dry stack service works.  That’s when it was important to be a subject matter expert.

But first I had to learn to get simple.

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 762 – Give Something Away for Free Because Your Time is Valuable

Quote: “If you’re good at something, never do it for free”

Monday:  Credibility – Subject Matter Expert

Here’s a funny scenario and you might be guilty of both sides of it.

You bring your car into get fixed and complain about the cost of a repair exclaiming that $150 an hour is outrageous.   Or maybe the same situation but you’re bewildered at an attorney charging $400 an hour.

Remember. You’re not paying for this hour… you’re paying for the 20,000 hours of study, training, tradeoff’s, and EXPERIENCE that the mechanic or attorney have accumulated to that moment.

You might have this internal struggle as you create your own pricing, especially if you creating a handmade product or offering a service.  The struggle comes from when someone complains about your pricing. 🙂

But you need to get paid what you are worth… and that doesn’t mean what you’re worth today – but what your experience is from over the years.

NOW… this is the tricky part because when we do email marketing we say create a freemium!  Do work and put it together in a PDF or video and give it for free!

Here’s the deal, it’s not exactly free. You are getting compensated, and I don’t mean with future sales, although that is the goal.  You are getting compensated, it’s just not a currency exchange it’s an email exchange.

The reason I wanted to spend time on this issue is to show it’s value.  You want to create the “freemium” but you haven’t because you’re worried about putting your expertise “out there” for free… don’t get caught up in the “free” part –  yes you are sharing some pretty amazing information – but you are doing this to acquire and grow your tribe.

Remember building credibility among your customers is a great way to improve loyalty and transform them into a strong tribe.

That means… today you should create your freemium and get it out there for your future tribe members to learn from your expertise!
