Stop making it so complicated.  It’s one of the greatest skills you need to learn.

I think it’s harder for those north of 40 to learn because we have gown up with “professional” quality words, photos, and video… but really, if you don’t publish something, it doesn’t matter how bad or good it is, right?

Saying “north of 40” is a little crazy, but I realized last night that isn’t always the case.

My niece has wanted, I mean really wanted, her very own YouTube channel.  Well… her mom finally agreed to it.

Engaging her into a conversation, I wanted to see where she was at… she started talking about production schedules… then she said, “I don’t know how to edit”, then she started talking herself out of it.

OMG!  She’s way south of 40… what’s going on!

It seems that every suffers from the “professional quality” issue.  Or is it a procrastination issue…

My advice to her is the same I’m going to give to you.

START

You don’t have to publish, but you do have to press record.  If you don’t press record you’ll have NOTHING to publish… if you have NOTHING to publish no one will know you are a Subject Matter Expert!

Everyone is an expert at something, but if you don’t write or record about it, no one will ever know it!

Remember, in the case of my niece, if she records… I mean pick up your iphone and press record… someone on Fiverr can edit it – OR you can just press record, talk, and be real, natural, and forget about the “professional” polish.

AGAIN, just press record.

What is credibility? We need to be very concerned with it to build trust with our followers, but what is it?

Credibility is anything that lends proof to your abilities.

The most common type of “proof” is an award.  Whether you’re top sales person or your industry “…of the year” – when an award comes from a third party source it’s like having an independent source say, “this person is amazing”.  That’s why awards are great.

But what if you don’t have any awards… then what?

Well, you can use your creativity to still find social proof.

What’s McDonald’s slogan… 1 Billion served?  haha… I think right on their sign it says, “billions and billions served” — well if a billion people have eaten there, it must be good, right?  So how many people have YOU served?  This is one great way to gain credibility.

You can list your education certificates and degrees, but you can also list the conferences and seminars you’ve attended.  If you speak at the conference, that’s HUGE credibility.  that means an organization thinks your knowledge is superior that they want you to teach their attendees!

Finally… another great way to say “BOOM” and capture your piece of credibility is to say what your sales are.  I recently started to learn from a new mentor… she’s sold a whole bunch online, she just said 40 million (in the course of her history) – but it’s amazing because she’s just as excited to make $600.  I was blown away at the 40 million, but honestly, the enthusiasm at $600 is real.  I can set a goal at 40 million, but I can relate to $600.

It’s a great lesson to learn and understand… when you are relatable you automatically gain credibility.

Go Be Relatable.

Learn by doing.  This is how we’ve done it for years.

We go to school, learn, then at sometime we’re suppose to “do”.  We make mistakes… that’s when people say that we learn from mistakes and that’s experience.

Well, I’ve got a different take on this and it has to do with that feeling that everything is speeding up.

I believe that everything is speeding up… it seems like learning curves are steeper and yet we continue to smash new levels of greatness in record time.

Let me explain.  I competed in baton twirling for 17 years, most was in the 80s to early 90s.  Right around 1984 the “compact” video camera became available. Now by compact I mean you put the unit on your shoulder and recorded on a VHS tape.

Well, that ability to record finally allowed athletes to see themselves!  I remember being able to watch my own practice and finally understanding what teachers and coaches were yelling at me to fix.

Yet the funny thing is, I have ZERO videos of me competing!

Why?

It was against the rules of competition to use video cameras to record performances, including your own!  It’s really sad…now…  I wish I had those performances on tape.

Anyway.  This also affected the sport.  It improved gradually.  You’d watch a competitor and try to figure out HOW they did a trick… but unless they were gracious enough to teach you, it simply was a mystery.

Flash ahead to 2019.

You can search YouTube and there is channel after channel with twirlers breaking down tricks.  You can watch advance twirler performances and go frame by frame to figure out the secrets.

As a result, the sport has not only progressed more quickly to bigger, impressive, extravagant skills… it’s nearly unrecognizable.  What was considered an elite twirler in my day is now two rungs down on the competitive ladder.

But more important is the ROLE of those that share and how it affects your business.  When you share your expertise you reduce the learning curve of your customer… when you reduce the learning curve of your customer they elevate their status quicker.  As a result YOU become more valuable as the expert they refer.

Those that guard their knowledge will be passed by… those that share their knowledge will position themselves as Subject Matter Experts.  Your new reality is that there are no longer secrets.  AND your hunch is correct… things have sped up.

While we still learn from our mistakes, and we still learn by doing, we no longer have the same “trial and error” time.  Subject Matter Experts help pave the way by sharing the secrets AND that’s the most amazing part of this technology revolution.

I love today’s inspiration… I mean, seriously!  How many places have you gone to when you’ve seen a statue dedicated to the entire board? hahaha

It doesn’t happen.

The reason it doesn’t happen is because a committee of one gets things done… yeah, that’s a cheesy quote, too.  But it’s true.

When you are “moving forward” (notice the air quotes) because often you feel bogged down by all the opinions around you, so when you’re “moving forward” remember you are the one that is in charge of your business!

You have to make the ultimate decision as to the direction you take your business and that means you must lead.

This is why the concept of framing your decisions as a “Subject Matter Expert” become critical.

If you are able to step back and make your decisions from this framework you will develop a loyal following and that’s what we’re here for!

Becoming a Subject Matter Expert takes time and money.  BUT, money won’t buy your credibility.

Think about that.

It’s like taking photos of a hotel room at a 5 star hotel, putting them on your 3 star hotel’s website and rationalizing that, well, it LOOKS like we’re a 5 star hotel.

Great idea, until…

The guest that reserved your room shows up and BOOM they’re mad you lied.  Your hotel loses all credibility.

You tried to buy credibility with “nice” photos — it’s just too bad they were not YOUR photos.

If you had just been true to yourself and sold your best attributes you would have earned credibility.

It’s really that simple.

Time and information earns credibility — but if you short cut it by trying to buy your way it will backfire.

If in doubt, think of the hotel example!

Why do you need to position yourself as a Subject Matter Expert?  Because it builds credibility.  It’s as simple as that!

Now I get it that it’s “uncomfortable” to brag about yourself, but it’s not really bragging… you’re leading.  Leaders need to sell themselves.  Think of a politician, they need to give many speeches that share their platform, they hand out a flier that shows their accolades, they develop a website that also lists accomplishments. WHY? so they earn trust that they will perform the job they are seeking.

You are doing the same thing!

Whether it’s a real world business or your online presence in a store or website, there needs to be a section devoted to YOU – thus, the “about me” page.

This is where you have an opportunity to “sell” yourself.  The reason you do this is because people want to buy from people!  They do not want to buy from businesses… that’s where the small business has HUGE opportunities!

You are given the advantage of being approachable.  Therefore… USE IT!

It might seem awkward at first, but think of it in “real world” terms… when you introduce yourself or you talk with a customer, do you ever mention things about yourself that lend to your expertise?  Such as, how many years you’ve been in business or hang a diploma/certification on the wall?  These things give social proof as to WHY someone should trust you…

I’m going to give you another reason… when you position yourself as a subject matter expert you “own it” – if you choose to sell your business, do you think “that’s it”?  Let’s say you’ve owned a dance studio for 25 years… you build a mailing list, you’ve got a reputation for excellent dance productions… but you’re done.  Business sold.

Now what?

Well… you still have all the knowledge of creating dance recitals, ordering costumes, motivating teams for competition, coordinating team travel… but without positioning yourself as an expert over the 25 years, you start from ZERO after you sell the business.

NOW… if you have a blog DURING the 25 years under your own name and then you go to sell the business… you still have 25 years worth of blogging, stories, and PROOF of your expertise…  This is VALUABLE!!! You can consult, create a book, or online seminars.  You continue with your personal brand.

Separate yourself from your business and create your subject matter expert status! This is SUPER important!

Having trouble with positioning yourself as a Subject Matter Expert?  Sometimes its because it feels strange to “brag”.  I assure you this is not bragging.

This is about building trust.

You need to build trust online and this is the most effective way to do this.  Here’s why… when you meet someone in person you have the advantage of picking up on non-verbal ques.  You can see the way they smile, the way they use eye contact, and even how they shake your hand.  But online you’ve got nothing!

Well… you have something… you have the ability to position yourself as a Subject Matter Expert!

When you’re having trouble trying to focus on “what” to list that would be helpful to strangers in the “building trust” category… just think of how you’d like someone to introduce you.

Imagine you’re taking the stage and the emcee is going to give your 30 second pitch!

What honor, titles, awards, and credentials do you want the audience to know about?

Your answer is exactly what you need to focus on.

So now… go, build up your profile and create a one paragraph “pitch” that you can add to your “about me” page.  This is really how easy the Subject Matter Expert positioning can be.
