The first “C” of the Infinity Marketing Machine is designed to build your credibility with your customers.  Our goal is to turn customers into a tribe that knows, likes, and trusts you.

It’s an important “C” that is often overlooked.  But, just like a face to face encounter can leave you a tad uneasy if you sense something is shady about the person you talk to… so too can a visit to your website if the person, business, or product seems shady.

The way to less “shady” yourself is to promote the things that make you reputable!

Often this is honors, awards, education, titles… but sometimes it’s as simple as sharing your knowledge.

Today’s inspiration goes miles for building your Subject Matter Expertise.  You must be willing to invest in yourself… this can be as simple as reading trade magazines.  However, it should not be a chore… if it is a chore, you may possibly be in the wrong industry.

Reading is the first aspect… writing and speaking is the next.  You must share your knowledge.

This can be in the form of your blog posts, posts on Facebook, pages on your website, or even the descriptions of your products and services.

There are many ways your expertise is highlighted.  This is why it’s so important to stay current with the latest trends and information.

So the next time someone remarks on how you’re reading a magazine… just tell them you’re building your subject matter expertise!   It’s true… keep current.

Let’s take a look at a post I saw online this past summer.

It’s celebrating National Ice Cream Day and it’s a cookie store.  Does the store sell ice cream?  Nope.

Just in case you don’t think you can make money promoting a “National Day Of…” that does not relate directly to your business… look at this

 

As you get more creative with your post think of this one… I love this company. The gal is an artist with frosting.  Look at how adorable these cookies are!  They taste yummie too.

But they don’t sell ice cream.  However, looking at the photo, you see just how creative they are with their marketing.

Here’s a challenge:

Today is National Indiana day… that should be easy for some of you in Indiana… or that have customers from Indiana.

Today is also National Fast Food — that might be a little more difficult… but imagine if you can see a fast food place out the window from your desk?  It’s OK to wish them a Happy Fast Food Day.  Even exercise facilities have “cheat days”!

I’ve got to tell you, Monday is National Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day!  YES… I’ll celebrate that one!  But maybe you have a soda machine you visit… it’s OK to make a silly post to just show you’re human.

What I’m trying to say is don’t let your fake plants die because you haven’t pretend watered them.  Let your tribe celebrate with you!  Sometimes silly works.  (PS:  From the dork files… when I was a kid, my parents went out of town and left me the job of watering the plants, hummm much to my surprise, many were fake!  Still watered them… oops)

So don’t actually water fake plants, but doing small things like showing your “behind the scenes” will pay off via loyalty with your tribe.

ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode #508 – Recycle the Sunset… or Is It a Sunrise?

When you create content, just remember… the sun will rise and the sun will set every day… yet, each day is different.  So while the story can be about the sunrise, there’s always something different to talk about.

While I had the sunrise on my mind… I pulled up the photo for today’s inspiration and noticed that if you type sunrise in the search, then you do another search and type sunset, they exact same photos come up.

So look at the photo… do you think it’s a sunset or sunrise?  I’m guessing your answer probably has some deep seeded psychological “tell” but it proves a point.  You can have the same story from many angles… OR… as you are trying to create valuable content… why not create a “best of” list, guide, or book for your tribe!

ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode #507 – What Does Driving a Barge Have To Do With Your Content Marketing Plan?

Today the inspiration talks about content marketing and how it’s great for SEO – but the at the end we get a hook on “building credibility”.

Let’s chat about Credibility.   I pick Mondays because I like to ease into the week by talking about ourselves!  haha  Sometimes that’s hard.

Here’s the deal.

The sooner you get out of your own way, the better!  And I’m going to use a real world example from last week.

The bulk of my “real world” experience comes from our family marina.  Well… last week my dad had a full knee replacement.  I know, ouch.  He’s doing well.  But while he’s recovering, I’m the point person for all things going on at the marina.

It’s now November, in Minnesota, and should be “calm”.  We just got all of the boats out and we’re waiting for the lake to freeze.   On Halloween we closed the gas dock for the summer, just over 10 days ago.

Historically the lake freezes mid to lake November, usually around Thanksgiving, two years ago it was the day before Christmas, but that was really late.

OK, so imagine my surprise when the owner of the barge company came in last week on Tuesday and said he needs to bring the barge over on Thursday or Friday because the lake is going to freeze by the end of the week!

The original plan was to bring it over at Thanksgiving.

But this meant we needed to get part of the dock pulled in preparation for the barge.

Again, at this point 6 days earlier we were still pumping gas, now I’m being told the lake is going to freeze.

hummmmmmmmmm…

This is why you need to be an expert and you need to rely on experts!

This seemed so out of the realm of possibilities to me, then again, we do not measure lake temperature.  They do.

I needed to stop. Think. Process. AND realize, they’re the expert.

Do you have this expert status command with your clients?  When you speak, will they do what I did with the barge company…?

Will your customers:
Stop.
Think.
Process.
AND realize that you are an expert?

This is why you need to position yourself ONLINE as a subject matter expert in your field.  You need to become the “go to” person/expert/business!

Friday: Big Money Small Change

I was looking through my phone for today’s topic for small changes you can implement now at your business.

The biggest thing????

Anticipation.

Did you ever have an old Polaroid camera… you’d snap the photo and then put the photo on the counter and wait… wait… wait and after about 90 seconds you could see your image?!?  There was something magical about the waiting.

This type of waiting is a good thing… it makes you bond with the “thing”.  (that’s my technical term) haha.

But it’s true.  You spend your time waiting so you’ve already invested a piece of you in the process.

Therefore, build anticipation with everything you do.  It’s going to help build loyalty.  I like to say “it’s part of the show” — now, this may seem difficult, but it can be very simple.

Last year before the Boat Show started I needed to make an “in person” stop to pay for the weekly parking permit.  The arena was alive with activity… I found the location of our booth space and took a picture, then marked up the photo with “Our Booth #1418 Coming Soon”

Our customers, along with most Minnesotans fighting cabin fever, love to visit the boat show and think of summer.

But it’s more fun to see the show before it’s set up, it’s a “behind the scenes” view… it’s a great way to connect on your Facebook page… and it builds anticipation!

You can do this when a new shipment of products arrive, just snap a picture of the shipping containers and a “guess what arrived” note.

These things are so simple, and they go a long way toward building loyalty!

One final example is a brand new iPhone.

Do you think Apple is incompetent that their box opens so slow?  OR, brilliant because it drives you nutz!  You just bought a cool new phone and you really want to see it, but it takes an extra 9 seconds for the bottom and top of the box to separate.

New Phone Day is the BEST DAY EVER!

So look to ways to build anticipation, you have them, so might as well use them!

ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode 504 – Quit Advertising, Throw A Party Instead.

“Inviting people into your home is about them, and not you. . . “

When I’m creating marketing ideas the easy way to come up with the best ideas is to consider the customer as a guest.

Sometimes this is a tough leap to make… depending on your crowd… but when you visualize the customer in your house you get a completely different perspective on how to interact with them.

For example… if you invite someone to your home, and they show up, you invite them in.  I mean how rude would it be to leave them on the porch?!

Same for your business.  Every piece of advertising you create is an invitation to visit your “home” a.k.a. your business.

That means… when they show up, treat them well!  Make sure your store/or office front is clean, welcoming, and that you are happy to see them!

Remember, you INVITED them.

See the difference?  If you look at marketing/advertising as your way to INVITE people it’s completely different from placing an ad or writing a post.

I’ve spent a lot of time on this particular topic… because I really, really like it.  I created a mini-series.  The first of a three part series on the way to becoming a tribeologist!

Yes… how cool is that.

We start with the marketing party system, move to the mini-infinity, then complete pre-tribe.  These three things are going to transform your business, easily, into it’s own Infinity Marketing Machine – based on the concept of building a loyal tribe that knows, likes, and trusts you!

It’s always risky naming a post “Get a Room” but when we look at today’s inspiration it all makes sense.

When we are building a tribe you’ve got to speak to them… HA!  I’ve now jumped from “Get a Room” to speaking about your tribe.  It’s getting a little strange at my keyboard.  Then again, I did write this on Halloween night.

OK. Back to normal.

Each Thursday our main goal is to learn how to better connect with our customers and turn them into a loyal tribe… to do this we need to speak their language… and this means we need to become the “vibe behind our tribe”

You need to be this person.  You must be the Leader.

Today’s inspiration states there’s always room for improvement – thus “get a room” meaning… always improve.

So Halloween at Noon I was at Subway and it hit me.  Carving Pineapples.

WTF is she talking about now.

Well… I have a site on the back burner which I’m currently cultivating.  It’s called Pineapples In Progress.  You see… I’ve always felt that there are times in life you need a crown.  I mean… doesn’t vacuuming just sound TOTALLY better if you’re wearing a sparkle crown?

That idea became a solid “run with it” idea when I came across the mantra “Be a Pineapple… Stand Tall, Wear a Crown, and Be Sweet on the Inside”  However, let’s face facts, not every day we’re feeling “pineapplely” – and that’s why, vacuuming while wearing a crown, just might make you feel a whole lot better.

Back to carving pineapples.

I was at Subway and getting ready to post my PineapplesInProgress.com Midweek Motivation – when it hit me.  The one I was going to post was a normal inspiration and THIS WAS HALLOWEEN.  I just wonder if anyone has ever tried to carve a pineapple like a pumpkin…

Sure enough I found a photo!  A very cool photo… and then it hit me.

You cannot carve pineapples.  It’s like trying to fit into a crowd by imitating… and yet you can be a good pineapple that imitates a pumpkin BUT you’ll never be a pumpkin.

BOOM.

Inspiration: “Somedays I feel like a lost puzzle piece tryin to find where I fit in this world.

I LOVE THIS.  I totally “got a room” and ran with it.

My only problem was… how do I share it with YOU.  I had already posted my Midweek Motivation for here… but I really wanted you to see it.

So there you go.  When you are building your tribe, really go deep into the vibe, and love them.  You just might find out that “carving a pineapple” is magic!

Be the vibe behind your tribe.

Also… never be afraid to run with a last minute idea… “Get a Room”!

Today’s inspiration has inspired me in several ways so I’m going to have some fun.  Tuesday is when we focus on two C’s of the Infinity Marketing Machine – that’s Content and Consistency.  These two are vital to creating great information to transition your customers into a loyal tribe.

Tribes like one leader that motivates them.  It’s important for you to have a strong sense of where you are going as a business to have customers follow you, and support you.  If we look at today’s inspiration it has several hidden meanings.

If I say it out loud, depending on your mood you could interpret it as a “get motivated” set of words.  Seriously, you better be careful your thoughts can become words!  If you have negative thoughts… “Ugh, I don’t want to slip on the ice” and thing you’re sitting on the ground.  OR “I will get the orders done and shipped today” and you do!  Your words are vital to your day.  I like the phrase, “what you believe you achieve.”

Next… when we read today’s inspiration we learn that our thoughts translate into words that can be interpreted very different depending on the listener.  At our marina we sell inner tubes and rafts.  We sell them inflated because our customers are heading on the boat and it is a huge convenience for them!

We also sell gasoline.

When we sell a tube, we need to replace it on the display.  We do this by taking a new tube out of a package and using our air compressor.  I refuse to say “blow up a tube” we “inflate a tube”.  This is critical because of my aforementioned “what you believe you achieve”.  Maybe it’s strange, but we sell gasoline!  Let’s eliminate the phrase “blow up” ok?!?

Now, the funny thing is… I’m very aware of this phrase, but you know what happened last week?  I was at the doctor to have the sun damage on my skin checked.  He asked, “what do you use?” and I said “suntan lotion”.   He had the exact same look of disgust as I do when someone says, “blow up a tube”.  He said, “sun block or sun screen” — HA!  Yes, I got my philosophy thrown against me… be careful of the words you choose.

Finally, my third example of a meaning behind today’s inspiration is this… take it as a challenge.  Careful… your thoughts can become your words!  You sit and look at a blank paper or blank screen, but as soon as you type or write your words it becomes a blog post!  So go for it.

What you see is not always what you get.  We just discussed that today’s inspiration can be a motivational quote.  It can be a challenge to get you to write a blog post.  It can also be a word choice selector and that words to one mean something different to another.  And finally these three examples show that we create a fourth example that the first read needs a second so you don’t operate on assumptions.

Today, do all four in one!  Be inspired to write a post that is motivating, but think about your word choice so you don’t catch someone off guard!

4) Work Hard.
RESULT: The “right” people will those that REALLY belong in your life (tribe) will come to you and stay!

People are attracted TO you.  Otherwise you become the “close talker” at the party that stuffs your business card in their pocket… you end up chasing them.  (and they run faster away from you… haha)

You want to attract people.  You want to attract customers.  You do this by being yourself and doing your own thing.  I love that you are here to read my post.  But if it annoys you that I write short paragraphs… use dot dot dot’s… and write conversation style.  Eventually, I’ll annoy you.

However… If you like my style, you’ll hang out, come back, and stay for a long time.

To transform a customer into an Infinity Customer. You need to make them want to stay.  This is accomplished by respecting them with information they desire that provides them insight in to YOU and makes them know, like, and trust you.

When this happens – they’ll stick around!  That’s the goal, create a tribe that wants to do business with you.

Imagine it’s New Years Eve.  You’re counting down… 6…5…4…3…2…1…

Then Nothing.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It would be an awkward moment, wouldn’t it?!?

New Year’s Even parties must be reliable.  Just like the 10:00 news.  How about the time the bus or train arrives.  These are things we set our clock by.

The way to realize how important reliability is happens when you’re listening to the morning news and the host on the east coast says it’s 7:03am instead of “3 after the hour”!   You’re in the central time zone thinking you’re an hour late!   That’s like a jolt of cold water in your shower.

This is the power of reliability.

Develop this mindset as you create content for your followers.  I use Tuesday to discuss the second and third “C’s” of the Infinity Marketing Machine… that’s Content and Consistency.

When you take the time to create content for your audience, it’s a gift.  This means your customers anxiously await it!  Think about your birthday as a child… you waited and waited… Your customers wait for your content. It’s important.  The loyalty of your following is built when you allow them the security that your content will arrive.  If you send something regularly for 3 weeks, then disappear… people will wonder where you went.  Don’t create stress in your customer, create confidence.

Create content and consistently deliver it.  Again, this is how you build loyalty and how the customers convert into a tribe.
