E195 – Build Your Credibility Online – You’ll Be Happy You Did

Why do you need to be a subject matter expert?  Because it will build your credibility online!  When you take the time to provide information and share your knowledge you will make a great impression.

Even if you think there are others with more knowledge… OK, there is always someone with more knowledge, don’t get hung up on it.  You have something valuable to share in your corner of the web.  Personally, I love this Tim Ferriss Quote: “Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.”  It just nails it.

You are awesome!

And that brings us to Monday — Monday is when we focus on Subject Matter Expert and why it’s important to your small business persona.

Your status as a Subject matter Expert is comprised of four areas; experience, time, study, and research. Showcasing your knowledge in these four areas will elevate your status from regular person to “go to” person.

It is important to become the person people seek out because there is so much clutter on the web you need to break through it. I often say that you don’t have to be a Subject Matter Expert in the field that relates to your business.  The reason is because, if you have a passion in an area, and someone is researching whether to do business with you, they will research you.  When they find information you want to control the message.

Controlling the message is being a Subject Matter Expert.  For example, I enjoy doing this blog, I work at my family’s marina, but I’m also a thought leader in baton twirling.  Yes… baton twirling.  I competed for 17 years, I’m currently a judge, and I’ve made an app for twirlers.  If you want to do business with me, although it’s not in social marketing, you will find my status and involvement in baton twirling.  This helps to lend creditability to you knowing “I’m real”.  That’s why I say, although it’s better to develop your subject matter status in the field of your business, it is equally powerful to simply have a Subject Matter Expertise!

This is why it’s important to carve out your corner of the web.  You need to focus on yourself… that’s what Monday is for… take a moment to enhance your status.  Start with Linked-In and bulk up your profile.  Maybe you choose Monday to create one addition to your blog/podcast/vlog that is just your subject matter expert area…

Let’s do this!

Episode #167 – New Concept in Online Authenticity.

People want to buy from people.  They do not want to buy from companies.  This is not new.  Even back in the days of shopping on “main street”, people may have purchased manufactured items, however they were purchase FROM a local shopkeeper.  This person knew their clients likes/dislikes but they also knew how many children they had and their important hobbles or athletics.

This still holds true for business, but you will not find out the details of your customers until they find out the details of you.

What does you “about me” say about you?

Is it framed from the reference of a Subject Matter Expert?

Subject Matter Expert is an important aspect to your entire social marketing campaign.  Your authenticity as a leader is developed through your Experience, Time, Study and Research.  The nice thing about becoming a Subject Matter Expert is the positioning it allows you over newer business in your field.

The time component positions yourself on one of three levels: Order Taker, Sales Person, or Subject Matter Expert.  Who would you rather buy from?

Study and research refer to the constant advancement of your knowledge base.  This area is also supported by time, the deeper your continual study the better for your SME status.  Even though you may have finished your “formal” education 30 years ago, you likely have 30 years of continuing study via conferences and industry training and trade magazines.  You have immersed yourself in the field much longer than someone who is entering the field. This is a huge advantage when it comes to selling.  Again, who would you rather by from?

Finally, experience.  It’s almost a recap of time, study and research – but when you bundle in recognition by your industry through awards and titles. You are a Subject Matter Expert.

The great way to continue to support your SME status is through the creation of your own blog, podcast or vlog.  It does take work but in the era of information consumption, positioning yourself as a Subject Matter Expert does help your online authenticity.  When you are the voice of your industry and give information about trends, research, and happenings on a consistent basis, people will look to you as a leader.

Therefore, people will look to your “About Me” profile to see if you align with their expectations, the ultimate “next step” to increased authenticity is to have that person follow your shared knowledge via your blog/podcast/or vlog.

Start today.

Episode #143 – Become a Subject Matter Expert, It’s Good For Your Legacy!

What is your legacy?  Maybe you think of this often, and maybe you don’t think of it at all.  I’m sure there are the people that think, “well my kids are my legacy” – dang. That’s crap.  You want to put the pressure on your kids to be your legacy?  And it’s selfish, because, what is their legacy… you.  Perfect they have no legacy because you stole theirs.  So back to the original question, what is YOUR legacy?

Your legacy is something you build, this could be a business.  However, what happens with the business can no longer be run by you?  Is this the pass-it on legacy you’re looking for?  Perhaps you need to set up a foundation to donate scholarships in your name.

There are many ways to pass on a legacy… but it starts today.

I’m going to recommend becoming a subject matter expert to begin this journey. When you combine your education, skills, awards, experience and research into one nice package that you promote, you are on the road to becoming a subject matter expertsubject matter expert.  This does not mean you need to be the best in the world at “it” however, you need to be found for “it”.

I’ve used this example often, but let’s say you’re an accountant that bakes apple pie.  And I mean really good apple pie.  In addition to your accounting expertise, you need to highlight your baking skills online in the bundle that is your subject matter expertise.  Why?  Because, people want to do business with people.  Let’s be honest, accountants have a reputation for being, well, reserved.  Would you like to know that your accountant bakes really good apple pie and they blog about it, in their office they have photos of making pie… it sounds silly, but it makes the accountant approachable and “relateable”.  It makes them human and real.  And it drives traffic to your website!

3 Good Reasons to Build Your Subject Matter Expert Status
1- Credibility
2- Authenticity
3- Traffic
4- Legacy (OK that’s 4…)

This is your legacy.  We have moved to an information society, that means you own the “stuff between your ears” therefore you need to publicize it.  When you brand yourself as a subject matter expert you level the playing field between someone that is fresh out of college to your experience.  It actually elevates your skills.  Remember, just because someone grew up using an iPad, does not mean they know how to market themselves.  Just because they have grown up in a world communicating on social media, does not mean they can be successful at social media marketing.  The skills do not transfer, they are learned.

Start today, pick your passion area, download my free guide, and start… in a month, you’ll be happy you did!  After all, would you like to buy something from an order taker, sales person, or a subject matter expert?
