What happens when Ben Franklin is wrong?  OK, not exactly wrong — but what if the necessity is the good bargain?

Here’s the deal… I got three big boxes full of stuff for free today and I wanted to share the magic.

And by free, I mean via rewards points.

SURE you have your credit card that earns points.  That’s great!  You often can get miles, hotels, or cash back — if you have the discipline they are great.

But have you ever double dipped?  Meaning you use a pre-purchase company — I love “My Points” I’ve used them forever.

But here’s why… when you shop somewhere and do it strategically you will earn points in a company, for free, and get free stuff.

SO double dipping… I click the company on My Points and end up on the same website but I’m earning points on my credit card and the separate referral company.

BUT… here’s the magic…

What happens when the store you use has it’s own reward program?  TOTAL SCORE!!!

I haven’t “paid” for toilet paper for a decade.  Totally not kidding.  Office Depot has an amazing rewards program that has a monthly store credit.  You can use the credit store wide.

This means I use My Points… to get to Office Depot… and I use a rewards credit card.

Today I got boxes and boxes of stuff for the credit I accumulated at Office Depot.

If you want to get the biggest bang for your buck as you need to buy things for your business… OMG, use My Points and a vendor with it’s own bonus/incentive program!

Welcome to the day after Thanksgiving – also known as Black Friday… well, I want to jump back one day and talk about being fearlessly authentic – which by the way we have an entrepreneur motivational line in our store with that motto!

So what does it mean to be fearlessly authentic?  It means to be true to yourself… and one amazing way to do this is in your posts.

The goal is to give your tribe the ability to understand the personality of your business and the best way to really understand this concept is to focus on holiday posts.

Here are the first 4 that popped up on my Instagram feed… they ALL are simply a “Happy Thanksgiving” Message… but look at how unique each one is to their business.

Whether it’s gift items, doggy day care – or my favorite the dog groomer… each takes the time to add their own flair to their message.

This is a very simple way to increase the loyalty of your tribe… and as we know, loyalty does bring money to you.  Not an instant connection but you need to build the tribe and the way to build them is to share your personality – so as the holidays approach – think of how you can share your unique business personality with your customers!

How can you surprise your tribe?  Take something expected and personalize it to your business.

It’s actually pretty easy

Look at how this yoga studio celebrates Halloween… online…

The message captures your attention – you expect a pumpkin or some variation of a Halloween message.  Since it’s a yoga studio you often see reminders of the core principles of yoga… such as light inside you.  But put them together and you have magic.

Take your messaging to the next level by using a nuance of the holiday that has a personal connection to your business terms or philosophy.

But I also like the text under the message — it’s a specific invite to the studio for chocolate!  The holiday is used for introducing new people to a new product.

Thats an easy way to increase sales for very small costs.

There’s something to the “everyone gets a trophy” philosophy.  People just love to be recognized.  Now the fall out might be that there are so many trophies that they begin to mean nothing.

However…

Sometimes the surprise recognition means a lot!

Earlier I was scrolling through my Instagram and came across this post…

 

These two girls are national champions in their own right.  But those “pieces of paper” mean more than the trophies that are waist high!  The pieces of paper show they participated in their world championships.

YES.

They did not make it on the medal stand, but they did get the recognition of participation.

Sometimes that means a whole bunch!  Those certificates will be framed and displayed right along side some very impressive medals in their rooms at home.

Well… how can you utilize this type of marketing?

Is there anything you do that is a “first” for customers… I like to think at our marina it might be a “first boat ride” or a “first visit to Lake Minnetonka” or maybe a special anniversary or birthday…

It’s a simple paper certificate – but the meaning behind it is picture worthy and even postable!  It’s inexpensive but can have a very big impact.

Figure out how YOU can do this at your business… I mean if Disney World hands out “first visit” buttons – it must be a good idea… right?

Last night I was winding down my 4th of July and as so many of us do… I was surfing my social media.

Then I noticed something…  while the 4th of July is the  same holiday for everyone, it can create unlimited possibilities when you post a traditional… “Happy 4th of July” message.

Look at these…

They all have the same message — but these were some of my favorites because they capture the spirit of the holiday AND the business….

There’s a dance studio, boating, waterpark, gymmnastics club, home decor, and dog breeder.

It’s great!  Look at how creative others get and do the same — the next holiday that comes up, really think of how you can mix your business vibe with that of the holiday.

It seems small – but it’s an impact that really affects your tribe and builds your loyalty!

This quote seemed perfect for explaining why I picked this post as the Big Money Small Change topic.

When you learn to express the emotion of your product you are less interested in the superficial aspects of the product.

I sell an egg, asparagus, and bacon sandwich.

Great.

What did your visual look like?  Did you have a red and white checker table cloth, black plate, yellow napkin with the sandwich in the middle?

How about a white linen table cloth, white plate with gold rim, and water glass with beads of water glistening in the sun.

Maybe you had an egg, hunk of bacon, and some veggies on a cutting board

There are endless ways to display this sandwich.

But what emotion are you trying to evoke?  When you answer this question, you will attract your tribe.

Look at this post.  Early morning cruise and a fabulous breakfast sandwich.  It also has a fork… you can feel the temperature, hear the wildlife, smell the water… you are in the emotion of the sandwich.

You feel relaxed and ready to eat.

If they said, “hey come on out, cruise around the bay, and eat our sandwich from our world famous chef”. You’d talk about the same “sandwich” but you would not achieve the same “emotion”

Don’t impress… just express!

I received an email the other day asking me to select my entree on my upcoming flight.

It was one of those breakthrough ideas I had to share.  The reason… people like their first choice.  So if you have an opportunity to give them a “select ahead of time” it makes their experience a little less stressful.

Seriously.

I can imagine this idea took some logistics to pull off.  They had to attach your selection to the reservation and print.  But, what a neat way to wow your customers!

 

You see… I’m a really picky eater.  I hate going to places with “food choices” like conferences or airlines… it creates stress.  You wonder IF you’ll be able to find something you like and worse yet… you watch the choices slowly go away.

I’ll put it like this.

You all know I love chocolate chip cookies.  I mean love them.   You also know that I think putting peanut butter into a good sugar cookie base is just down right mean.  GROSS.  Peanut butter only goes on bread.  (told you I’m picky) — but I really can’t stand peanut butter cookies.

So imagine my stress if you can see the two trays of cookies from across the room and you LOVE one choice and you HATE the other.   When you watch the Love Love Love cookies leaving… UGHHH it’s maddening.

When the airline offer the opportunity to select the meal ahead of time – it builds the brand, differentiates them, becomes another service offering and strengthens the tribe.

It’s super simple.  Just ask your customers what they want!
