Quote “Delay Is Not Defeat…”

Wednesday: Midweek Motivation

Ahhhh the ultimate test of patience is understanding that Delay is not Defeat.  Often I have to remind myself of this small, quick, little, phrase when things just don’t seem to be moving fast enough!

You know those days… the days you feel like the cartoon character running from the anvil that’s about to hit you in the head but you’re stuck running in place.

OH this is how I felt yesterday.

I was trying to get in contact with our tech support for our new website… you see it’s our scheduling site for pontoon rentals.  Well, they updated the pricing but forgot to update the calendar for July.

Therefore, I had people making reservations for July 4 on Wednesday instead of July 4 which is really on Thursday!  UGHHH.  It’s one of those moments you just get to wait.  “patiently”.  There’s nothing you can do… you know you have a problem, you know it will be solved, it’s not a defeat… it’s just a delay.

So hang in there!

ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode #413 – The Stuff You Do Best

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do” John Wooden

Ahhhh you own a small business… as such, you wear many different hats.  You answer phones, work in shipping, clean bathrooms, schedule meetings and if you’re lucky… actually work on your core product.

You feel like you must know everything!  But do you really need to know everything?

NO!

Hire people!  Today we had a visit from our safety company.  You see… I know we generate hazardous waste.  We have repair shop!  That means we have paint, oil, and other minor chemicals.  But do you have any idea what type of documents you need for this?  Oh… there are a bunch.  We hired a safety company and they are in charge of our forms.

I’d spend a lot of time (and frustration) trying to get into compliance because I’d do it once… HUGE LEARNING CURVE — this company… they go to marina after marina gaining knowledge at each one and they can compile the information quickly.  It’s a great feeling to write the check because I know it’s a service that’s totally worth it!

My advice, quit dreading things about social media marketing.  Sure you need to know that you need a website, but you don’t have to learn how to code.  Hire someone to help you create what you want.

It’s worth it!  If you don’t understand, don’t be embarrassed, ask questions and seek others with more knowledge.  Get out of your own way.

Sometimes it’s hard for an Entrepreneur to grasp the “paying for help” concept because you’re by nature a “do it yourself” person, however, you need to explore it.  Yes, it will cost money, but usually it saves you money because you can focus your time on the stuff you do best!

Episode #407 – Go For A Walk

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.”

Are you ready?

If you answered, “yes” – what are you waiting for?

Today, for our Midweek Motivation, we get to figure out what is stopping us.  You see we’ve answered that we’re ready and yet, we can’t quite get “it” going!

I’m glad you’re here for a goal achieving / motivation refresher! Remember the best thing to do is get super specific about what you want… alright, that’s fine.  You’ve got that covered, but you just can’t get “it” together to get going… then what?

I like the chunking it down technique.  When you take the big goal and break it into smaller goals you have a great opportunity to succeed and keep going…

But again, what if you just can’t even get to that smallest chunk?

Then stop.  Get away from the goal all together.  Clear your head!  It’s ok.  You need to take a break… try a 5 minute walk.  If that doesn’t do it… go for an other 5 minutes.  Just get out of your own way so you can get back to the beginning, gain clarity, focus, chunk down and GO GO GO!

PS:  I started writing this post and I was TOTALLY unmotivated… so I did get up and let my dog out and then attacked it!  Trust me… that whole get up and clear your head thing really works.

Episode #364 -The Nagging Ideas are the Best Ideas!

“If you can’t stop thinking about it… don’t stop working for it”

The best idea you have is the one that never leaves!  We’ve all had them, especially entrepreneurs.  There’s a special product or service you want to develop, maybe it’s a policy or procedure… but the idea is there.

Sure, it seems like a big or daunting task… yet, there it is.  Right in the center of your target and you for some reason keep circling back at it.

It’s funny, but this type of idea can be one you’ve decided to plan to attain OR it’s just a thought you find important… either way, if you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t.  Just get out there, make the decision and go for it.

You can have great success with ideas like these.  There’s a reason it’s nagging at you or seems just unattainable… and it’s not to drive you crazy!  It’s because in your gut or your mind you just know it’s right.

At that point, your subconscious has decided to make it happen, it’s just your conscious that needs a little help.  Figure out why you are pausing… is it because it’s out of your comfort zone?  As I’ve said before, make a plan for achievement and break it down into smaller pieces.  If you need inspiration with your goal attainment path, just check my website.  Otherwise, I’m giving you permission to jump in and make that idea a reality!

PS:  I just did this today… I bought a very cool domain… you’ll find out soon – but this idea has been nagging at me for a long time and now I’m one step closer!  Yea! 🙂

Episode #140 – Marketing is THE Profit Center

Where is that elephant?  Yep, today’s inspiration is one of my favorite types of inspirational quotes.  It’s no different from the “how do you eat an elephant?… one bite at a time” quote.

You’ve got to break things down.  If you look at the one big task it will overwhelm you!  But if you plan a journey that distant goal will be closer than you think.

What are small steps?

It’s looking at your business, right now, and deciding where you want to be in a time frame.  It’s the combination of goal setting and thinking big.  Make sure to grab my free download on how to break things down… When you do, you’ll learn that if you want to earn an extra $500 a month… break it down.  Sell something where you earn $25 each.  Then divide $500 by 25 and that’s just 20 units a month.  Just sell 20 “things” every month.  Would an extra $500 a month make a difference?  What happens if you sell 40 “things” a month… yep, $1,000!

Remember there’s a bunch that happens in the course of selling 20 or 40 “things” a month… for example, you need the “thing” and the “thing” needs to profit $25 – but it’s possible.  It’s much more realistic to say, my goal is to sell 60 units a month at $25 profit to make $1,500 a month to pay for my rent.  Goal, outcome, and realistic path!  Imagine if you could buy a different car… the $400 car payment is really 16 units a month.  (Read my download)

Now…

HOW do you do this?  It takes work!  There was a time, about 15 years ago, that you put one ad in the Sunday paper and you hoped for the best.  The bad news is marketing is much more diversified and one ad in a paper no longer works.  However, the good news is marketing is much more diversified and works better!  I agree when the “experts” say, the money is in your list.  You need your own “following” of people that are fans.  People that love your business!  These are the people you continue to nurture with information about your business and industry. You stay in regular touch with them via social media marketing and you provide value to them on a consistent basis. It is after you provide value that this “list” becomes profitable.  When the list is profitable, Marketing is THE Profit Center.

Episode #135 – Take a Walk. Forget the Door Exists.

We’ve reached that point again.  The point where you need to do something, action must be taken.

You’ve analyzed your options and created a plan of attack, but now there’s one simple yet difficult task ahead…

Open the door.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately.  It’s been a lot of reading and researching on social media marketing.  I’m in the process of writing a book and back in February I wrote 95 pages.  Then I got to a point where I realized I wasn’t happy with what I wrote.  It was blah and honestly, it wouldn’t help at all.  Here’s the funny thing, it was just like the books I’ve been reading!

So this summer I’ve been working at the marina and implementing systems to help me understand what works and what doesn’t work. I’m going to come to one conclusion, I totally understand why social media is overwhelming for small businesses and I totally understand why it usually looks like a cluster F.

I asked my cousin who is building a Yoga Empire (she’ll laugh at that), but I texted her the question of how much time she would have to devote to social media marketing, she sent me back the full stream laughing emoji.  I didn’t quite understand it until I read one of the books last night… the author suggested that you need to get serious and devote 10 to 15 hours a week to social media marketing.  And that’s when I completely understood the full stream laughing emoji.  BTW, I raise my cousin’s one emoji to three!

I’m in the peak of summer right now, but I think I know where the book will go. So stay tuned.  I’m opening the door.  I see daylight!  You can sign up for my email list here, when it’s ready (and it will be awesome), I’ll drop you a note.

Now back to your door.  What is it that you’ve been planning for a while that you haven’t been able to make a decision about?  I’d say something odd like… “just open it”.  But it’s probably not that simple.  Today, just forget about it.  Go work on something you like about your business.  Do something fun… take your dog for a walk… check here for ideas.  When the time comes, you’ll open the door.

PS: if you love my post, give it a “like”!

Action Step
1- Take a break.  Go do something to refresh your mind.  Take a walk, read a book, watch TV… just stop.  Do something fun.  The door will still be there tomorrow.

Episode #128 – Look at a Problem from a Different Angle and the Solution Might Appear!

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change.”

A long time ago, I set up the first database at our marina.  It’s the one we use to this day.  I had experience with “My Mail List” so I understood the basic concept of how data entry worked, for example I understood what fields were, but I really didn’t know much more than that. It was 1989.  The thing that drove me crazy was when I set up the database I couldn’t figure out how to get around one particular problem.  The problem was when someone owned more than one boat.

The database system is created from records and you can assign each record a unique number.  This typically becomes a customer ID.

The reason this was such a hurdle was when I tried to create an invoice or work order using the information in the database via the Customer ID, and the customer had more than one boat, I couldn’t.  The features of the 1989 program would not allow it.  It had the ability to create a complex relationship where two databases “talked” to each other; one based on humans, one based on boats. The two databases integrated allowing you to you could see that one customer had multiple boats, but again, you could not use that detailed information like boat license on the invoice.

So what to do…

It took several weeks of “playing” with the system.  Then it dawned on me.  The human is not the customer, the boat is the customer!  I could create multiple records for each boat’s individual information and just mark the additional records as “no mailing” so the customer would only receive one flier in the event I did a mass mailing.

It was simple, brilliant, and took an entirely different way of looking at the situation.  Just because the manual kept calling the “human” the customer didn’t mean in all cases of creating a database the human would be the customer!  For example, at a vet clinic people have multiple pets and the pet would be a customer.

I have refereed to this problem many times over the years when trying to solve other problems.  Sometimes you have to stop and align your business goals with the goals and outcomes of the problem you face.  With my database creation problem, it’s like there were two different languages being spoken, but once the common ground was found, we understood each other!

PS: if you love my post, give it a “like”!

Action Step
1- If you have a seemingly unsolveable problem – try looking at it from a different angle – it might not be today, but keep my database example in mind.  Remember try to align your business goals with the main issue of the problem… the solution is right there!
