Content is typically thought of as the words you speak or write… but then again we have photos so content doesn’t have to contain words.

So does content tell a story?  It can, but you can also create content that causes a vote… I mean, what else is a survey!

Your content is completely subjective and it’s about connection.  It could be through music or video.  There are lots of ways to create the connection you desire.

So what about your packaging.  Does packaging qualify as content.

Let me answer that with a question, have you ever seen an “unboxing”?

OH my we’ve actually created a word to describe the act of opening a package.


If there’s a word, you better pay attention to it.  So YES packaging is content, and it can create content.

The big difference you have over is this… you can create a personal connection via your packaging. Your vibe will translate through your thank you note, stickers, stuffing.

Amazon has that smile on the outside of the box, but typically nothing vibe worthy on the inside.

Therefore…this is an area you can knock your customers socks off!  I mean… here’s the deal… Amazon is affecting your pricing, you might as well capitalize on your vibe.  It will help with your return customers… I mean Infinity Customers!

Include a treat, a small momento, it could be a piece of candy, a rubber duck, a key chain.  It should not be expensive, it does not need to be a logo based item, but it must evoke your vibe.

Could you imagine if you sold movie memorabilia and inside the shipping box you included a bag of microwave popcorn with your thank you note?  That would be so cool!

I don’t have an online store associated with our marina.  I had one around 2006…  but if it were open right now, I’d include a thank you note and a smile face beach ball.  Why?  Our city has a smile face on the water tower and you can see the smile face on your way to our marina via the water!  AND it’s something you can use on the boat.

The smile face beach ball evokes emotion, becomes a vibe, and causes people to talk… it becomes your “no words needed” content.  If you include a hashtag sign in the box you’ll also receive social interaction.  Again, more content!  Gosh, this makes me want to open an online store for the boat yard!

Go the extra mile and think about what you can do as you expand your view of content!

Create an Experience!  Look at this candy display…  It evokes the “Old School” general store feel with a little nostalgia in the middle of the fancy hotel.

Why is this important?

Look in the jars… there are Tootsie Rolls, suckers, and other “penny” candies… it looks like Jolly Ranchers…  Super ordinary candy.

BUT, the experience of the glass jar, metal tin, and wooden crate make this a memory.  Even if you are not buying candy, you slow down just a little to appreciate the display.

If you stopped in and saw a slat wall with pegs and hanging bags of tootsie rolls or jolly ranchers would you get the same “longing for yesteryear” feel?


So… the question is, “How can you enhance the mood at your business?” and if your in person area is not a retail store, you can do this online with photos, fonts, info graphics and even music!  Look for these opportunities to dare I say, enhance the “VIBE” at your business!

It’s always risky naming a post “Get a Room” but when we look at today’s inspiration it all makes sense.

When we are building a tribe you’ve got to speak to them… HA!  I’ve now jumped from “Get a Room” to speaking about your tribe.  It’s getting a little strange at my keyboard.  Then again, I did write this on Halloween night.

OK. Back to normal.

Each Thursday our main goal is to learn how to better connect with our customers and turn them into a loyal tribe… to do this we need to speak their language… and this means we need to become the “vibe behind our tribe”

You need to be this person.  You must be the Leader.

Today’s inspiration states there’s always room for improvement – thus “get a room” meaning… always improve.

So Halloween at Noon I was at Subway and it hit me.  Carving Pineapples.

WTF is she talking about now.

Well… I have a site on the back burner which I’m currently cultivating.  It’s called Pineapples In Progress.  You see… I’ve always felt that there are times in life you need a crown.  I mean… doesn’t vacuuming just sound TOTALLY better if you’re wearing a sparkle crown?

That idea became a solid “run with it” idea when I came across the mantra “Be a Pineapple… Stand Tall, Wear a Crown, and Be Sweet on the Inside”  However, let’s face facts, not every day we’re feeling “pineapplely” – and that’s why, vacuuming while wearing a crown, just might make you feel a whole lot better.

Back to carving pineapples.

I was at Subway and getting ready to post my Midweek Motivation – when it hit me.  The one I was going to post was a normal inspiration and THIS WAS HALLOWEEN.  I just wonder if anyone has ever tried to carve a pineapple like a pumpkin…

Sure enough I found a photo!  A very cool photo… and then it hit me.

You cannot carve pineapples.  It’s like trying to fit into a crowd by imitating… and yet you can be a good pineapple that imitates a pumpkin BUT you’ll never be a pumpkin.


Inspiration: “Somedays I feel like a lost puzzle piece tryin to find where I fit in this world.

I LOVE THIS.  I totally “got a room” and ran with it.

My only problem was… how do I share it with YOU.  I had already posted my Midweek Motivation for here… but I really wanted you to see it.

So there you go.  When you are building your tribe, really go deep into the vibe, and love them.  You just might find out that “carving a pineapple” is magic!

So I was out walking my dog today — then I realized, he sure is full of American Spirit right now!

I create personalized dog collars as a hobby business… Mr. Pancake is sporting a brand new stars and stripe collar and leash combo.  However, he also got a hair cut last week and picked up a pretty bandana, also in a stars and stripe theme.  That’s when I wondered if I had turned into one of “those people” – you know… the crazies that dress up their dog.

He’s not a teeny tiny little dog either – he’s a big doodle with a fuzzy face.

That’s why today’s inspiration caught my eye.  After thinking that I probably have crossed the line into needing help for my dog decorating disorder… I then wondered, do birds overhead just look at him and laugh?  They probably do, but guess what… when Mr. Pancake wants food, he simply goes to the kitchen.

No hunting needed.  The birds on the other hand spend their entire day on the search for food.

What does this have to do with the daily running of your business?  Your business needs a theme and you need to believe in the theme right down to your “stars and stripe bandana” – There’s a vibe you create… even if you don’t think you create a vibe, you are.  The vibe might be happening TO YOU instead of you intentionally creating it.  But it’s there.

Your logo, your colors, your furniture. They all come together to tell a story.

Therefore, you need to ask… “What story am I telling?”

That’s the question for today! The goal is that you want to be so proud of your “stars and stripes bandana” that the other businesses think you’re part of a weird cult – all the while you know the truth and that is…  they have to hunt for their food while you simply walk to the kitchen.

Make It Your Own

It’s a bar. It’s a work of art!

Recently I was on vacation and I was super hungry for lunch.  After walking along the beach, a cute little restaurant/bar appeared.  When you walk in this restaurant it has an amazing first impression.  It’s probably the only bar decorated with bottle caps and colored lights.  What was once ordinary is now a focal point and cool piece of art.  It makes me wonder what the story is… did someone nail one bottle cap and it got out of control?  I don’t know, but it would be a cool story to put on their menu…

This business took a risk.  They did something unique and it worked.  What I like seeing is when a small business makes something all their own. I don’t mean make a piece of furniture, I mean they took ownership of what their company vibe is and expressed it in a unique way.  This can be accomplished with paint, words on a wall, or the front desk in an office.

Your mission statement on paper is critical to your day to day operations.  It helps to focus your process to ensure a great outcome. The problem with a mission statement is that it’s flat.  I’d love it if you took the opportunity to add a vibe and feeling to your mission statement.  Sure, your branding takes care of font and colors, but this task is a little different.  Ask yourself what feeling or emotion do you evoke when someone walks in your door?

Here are two ways to think about vibe/feeling.  Buy a hamburger.  It’s a grilled ground beef patty on a bun.  Now go and buy the hamburger at a fast food counter, the local greasy spoon, a sports bar, and a fine dining experience.  It’s still a hamburger but the vibe of each location is very different.  Next, go looking for a hotel room… you visit a roadside motel, an business traveler hotel, and a luxury resort.  Again, it’s a room you sleep in, but the vibe is completely different.

What vibe does your business give off?  Is this correct?  Do you want to change it…   Start to pay attention to the feeling your business creates.  Here’s how we’ve used this at our marina.  In the winter it’s difficult to sell boating in Minnesota.  Outside there’s a foot of snow, the wind is howling and the lake is frozen.  What I’ve done in the past is create a summer vibe.  When someone visits our store they’ll see fresh flowers, feel a warmer room because I slightly turn up the heat, it smells good because I plug in air freshners that smell like coconut (sun tan lotion), and they hear some great Jimmy Buffet summer music, and finally, as a distraction to the outdoor windows I rotate beautiful photos on our monitors.  It’s not cheesy or overbearing, but it has a summer vibe.

Action Step
1-Evaluate the Vibe/Feeling/Emotion of your business.  Write down three words to describe it from the customer experience.

2- Is this the vibe you want?

3- What can you do to enhance the current vibe or what can you do to change it… for example, add a water feature or plants,  music…   When will you implement this???
