– Episode 745 – Who Are You Creating Content For?

Quote: “You are not trying to be everything to everyone. You have your niche, your clear and ideal customer. You’re crafting content for them.”

Tuesday: Content and Consistency

If you’re “stuck” and having trouble with your content direction… ask yourself, “Who am I creating content for?”

If you say my tribe… or my customers… or people.

You need to reevaluate your targets and goals!

Content is best created for  your ideal customer.  Think of that one person you want to attract, or maybe that one customer you want to repel.

Sheeh — yes, this works in the reverse too.  The person you can’t stand is obviously picking you for a reason – figure out what it is that is attracting them and RUN!  Do something that stops that invitation.

Alright back to the ideal customer.

Think of that perfect customer.  The one that pays you on time. The one that orders products and services from you. The one that makes your live enjoyable and profitable.

Now imagine you had 20 of those people to work with!  What a joy.

Write down the characteristics of this person… is it a man/woman, age, schooling, hobbies, likes, dislikes, height/weight, etc… just keep going and get specific.

NOW.  Think of this person and answer the question “What content am I going to create?”

If you have your ideal customer in mind… the answer to this question becomes easy!

Now go, do this exercise.

Quote: “Remember… No matter how good your feedback is, you always start over with the next customer!!”

Thursday: Infinity Customer

Do you remember being in school and your football team reached the end of the season… you had a great team they won a lot, in fact, they qualified for regionals…  Then a year passes and the team starts playing again and they picked up where they left off playing for the regional championship, right?

The next year they start over.

This is exactly the same thing you have with your customers.  You might have a wonderful experience with a customer and the next one hates you.

Often I have this conversation, and I learned it working in college admissions,  but I won’t say bad things about our competition.  I had a customer a week ago tell me how awful our competitor is… well, not even the competitor, the actual owner… who is a friend. My standard answer is, plenty of people don’t like me either.

It’s true.

The reason?  Well, they’re not my ideal customer.

Your ideal customer will mesh with your rules and expectations – if they do not, you have conflict and sometimes bad experiences.  That’s why it’s so important to carefully identify your ideal customer from the start!

So where does this leave us?

Take the time to identify your ideal customer… think of the person you enjoy serving.  The person that makes you want to unlock your door each day.  What does this person do for a living, how do you find more of them, and more important, why do you like working with them?

At a minimum… they pay their bill.  No sense in doing business with someone that doesn’t pay their bill, is a slow pay, or that you have to chase down to give you money.

When you determine your ideal customer you will never have a problem making a decision for products and services, all you have to do is say, “would customer X buy this?” – if no… then don’t carry it.

It really is that simple.

Your goal is to create that person that returns over and over… make “that person” one you really enjoy!

“You pick who you want to struggle with”

Thursday: Infinity Customer

Beep Beep – struggle bus just pulled up!  All aboard.

Can I say, “all aboard” for a bus or is that just for a train?  Hummmm something to ponder (and distract me).

Do you ever feel like you have an all access pass to the struggle bus with your customers.  I’ll bet there are a few that you have which take up a great deal of your time. OR better yet, you see them walking in, or their number pops up on your phone, and you shrug.

Guess what?

You picked them.

Sure, you can think that they picked you — but I’ve got news for you… you created an ad or some how attracted them, and now they’re yours!

So what do you do now?  I mean, there they are!

Well, get very focused on who you really want to work with.  Figure out who your ideal customer is.  Really!  This is a thing.  When you sit down and spend time to figure out who you want to attract, they will appear.

Imagine everyday you wake up to start working and your “favorite customer” is the only person that calls or emails!  How amazing would that be?

So today… sit down and list your favorite three customers.  Then write down what makes them your favorite.  Do they pay in full, on time?  Do they love your ideas? Are they creative?  Do they have a golden doodle and love chocolate chip cookies?  Oh wait, that’s me.

But you get my point.

Once you have your list of two or three ideal customers you are going to be able to attract them! So there you go, a little homework to start your day!

Thursday: Infinity Customer

If you work face-to-face with customers… today’s inspiration is for you!

Today I achieved an all time new low in customer behavior.  Are you ready…

As a reminder we’re a marina.  One of the services we provide are pontoon boat rentals.

So here goes…

A woman rented a pontoon boat. She did not order a ladder. She did not pay for a ladder. She did not ask for a ladder. She signed paper work that declined a ladder.  She left the dock.  It was 64 degrees, windy, cloudy, and we had three downpours, 5 of 9 boats opted for rain checks… so it was terrible “swimming” weather.

About an hour later she came back to the dock, she walked into the store, and said “I want a ladder but I’m not paying for it”  When asked, “why?” -her answer, well, in the “real world” you don’t have to pay, we left the dock there wasn’t a ladder and we were inconvenienced to have to come back to get one, therefore we don’t have to pay.

So now in the “real world” if you simply play ignorant and scam systems, and you get things for free.  If that’s the “real world”, I want nothing to do with it.  She was very upset that she didn’t get her way.  She paid.  (so did we… with her swearing… lots of swearing… etc).

How does this affect you?

Well, we need to reevaluate our avatar – you know… our ideal customer profile.

See… me personally… I want customers that pay. I’m not into this “real world” crap.   I guarantee somewhere in her closet she owns an “adulting is hard” shirt. haha.  But honestly, I do not want people like her anywhere near me or my staff.  At 12:30pm today, my biggest wish was that it magically would be 8pm and we could lock the door.

So instead of locking your door – Quit attracting nonsense!

You need to strategically find customers that align with your business policies and practices.  And you know what that means…?  You must understand what you will and won’t tolerate.

I do not tolerate “free”.   Just like you do not get to eat the entire meal then complain it sucked.  In my store, you don’t get to “complain” that you wanted a ladder when your signature is one inch away from your declining a ladder on a contract!

Business are designed to serve customers.  But that does not mean you have to spend your time “serving” scoundrels and scammers.  When you take control and create an avatar of your ideal customer, your life will improve greatly…

We have an avatar… but I guess I’ll have to reevaluate our policies (and pricing) because it appears that a few freaks decide to join us! (roll eyes)

Thursday is our day to focus on Infinity Customers – these are the people we want around for a long long time.  That means creating your ideal customer avatar is super duper important…  my first recommendation for your “must have” list is… customers that pay!!!!
