Episode #165 – Goal Achievement Brings More Goal Achievement

My favorite inspirational quote is “what you believe you achieve” which is nearly the same as the quote I chose for today which is “what we focus on we attract”.

There is a little difference between focus and believe along with attract and achieve.  “Attract” implies it comes to you while “achieve” is going and getting it.  The same with focus and believe, although you can focus on something, you can focus without believing.

So while you can focus your thoughts to attract something, it is much more powerful when you throw in the belief that you can make it happen.

How do you make it happen?

Start with a power goal session.  Imagine (focus) on what you really want.  Brainstorm that ideal situation. Then develop the plan with baby steps to make it happen.  Look to others who have the success you desire and follow what they did well.  Remember, they took a learning curve with errors along the way, don’t follow the errors (haha).

This all starts with goal achievement.  Check out the article on my website.  The success you achieve will depend on the path to your goal.  To help you along the way, practice solid goal setting techniques.  Use the SMART method, (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Rewards Orientated, Time bound) goal setting.  The more specific (focused) your goal, the better your success rate.  The reason is because when it’s specific, you know exactly how far away you are from achieving it because it is combine with the  “T” of time bound. This allows you to adjust as needed.   Don’t be afraid to readjust your goal mid-path, readjusting is not failure… it is simply readjusting!

Readjusting will bring successful goal achievement.  Now here’s the funny thing the goal achievement will bring another, and another, and another!  It’s almost like it attracts more!  When you focus on goal achievement you attract goal achievement!

Episode #125 – Focus Your Goal!

“If you want to live a happy life tie it to a goal, not to people or objects” Albert Einstein

Here’s the deal… focus your goal — don’t focus on the goal, but actually focus your goal.

Goal setting is funny, because it ties itself to people and objects, yet if we follow Einstein’s inspiration we can only live a happy life when tied to a goal but not to people or objects.  Sounds to me like there’s a little “chicken and the egg” going on.

Think about it, if we use the SMART goal setting technique we need to have a Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Rewards Bound, Time Sensitive goals.  That means instead of setting your goal as “increasing sales” you need modify to include the “Increase sales 10% by July 31 and I can do X”.  You have a Measurable/Attainable/Time sensitive goal with a reward.  In order to accomplish this goal you need people and objects.  The “sales” portion of the goal relies on the interaction with vendors and customers.  The reward is an object… so I think Einstein’s saying is ironic, granted he was a pretty smart guy (haha), but did he intend us to focus on the goal knowing that the goal is attached to people and objects…

Well, that aside, let’s examine the goal one more time, but this time use the SWOT analysis.

When you use SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat) method for goal achievement you can find some cool advantages.  Setting the goal is one thing, but attaining it will happen with greater odds if you evaluate where you’re at to find your focal points.

We’ll use our original goal of “Increase sales 10% by July 31” – List the four categories of Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats and under each category evaluate your top 3 to 5 “things”.  For example, if you opened your Facebook and your competitor’s ad just popped up for the same product you sell… there’s a threat!  However, if you bundle product Y for the same price there’s the Opportunity!  This type of exercise will allow you to focus on the outcome!

Episode #120 – Have an Idea… Now Do It!

Alrightie… it’s acronym time! START Start Today Achieve Results Tomorrow. There’s nothing better than starting your week with a good old fashioned acronym… well at least an acronym, I’m not sure it’s good.  Haha

Much like my Bob Marley quote you’ve got to start. After you develop your goal and the plan to achieve the goal you have to start.   Silly as it sounds, there are plenty of people that think big but don’t actually start.  This is why I talk about goal achievement instead of goal setting.  I mean, most people are pretty darn good at setting goals, but, not quite as good as attaining their goals.

I think START is a jazzy little acronym.  “Results” are your key word, and that’s plays right into my article on my website to help – you must have a specific and measurable goal.  Here’s my real world example.  It was very busy at the marina this past Thursday.  That’s Thursday June 29.  Which in the USA Marina world is the equivalent of a couple days before Black Friday in the retail world… we’re busy getting ready for the 4th of July.  Anyway… I got the idea that if I sent out an email announcing a special for membership in our boat club that maybe someone would sign up.  I knew it would take a little over an hour to create a slide/video presentation and skim my email list for active prospects.  The timing would be great because the weather forecast was wonderful…but it was also getting close to 3:00 pm – and that means my “work email” addresses would be going home soon… boom, let’s do it.

My goal. One new sign up.
Plan: skim list, create video, write email
Time: one hour

At 4:17pm the email went out and shortly before 5:00pm one person called and joined us! Our membership rate was just under $2,500.

This was not “magic” all of the people I sent emails to had previously requested information and had been in my email loop.  It was the right message, right time, and right price. The magic was that, I was prepared, I had an idea, and decided to START.

Episode #113 – Define Success On Your Terms

I had a crew member tell me that he liked getting a paycheck, he’d just like it IF he didn’t have to work to get it. He lasted about two more weeks and then he just “no show no called”.  Shocking… I know.  He is someone that simply doesn’t understand today’s inspiration.

“The only place success comes before work is in a dictionary.”

Or does he understand it?  OK, that would be giving him waaaay too much credit.  But hear me out.  Depending on your definition of success the receiving a check without working is ideal… I say this with caution because, again, it depends on the source of the check – if it’s coming from mom and dad and you’re living in their basement as an adult… that is not what I mean.  However, if you’ve worked hard and now invest the money and get a check – cool!   Notice I said “worked hard” – the man-boy didn’t want to work.

Let’s go further.

Question: How do you define success?
Answer: Any way you choose.

Success is based on what you want it to be.  You can live your life comparing yourself and your business to others.  When you do this you become “just like them” except you don’t.  You become a less successful version because what they did was original and trailblazing… what you do is copying.  If you truly want to be successful, define and blaze your own trail.  That way when you accomplish your goal, you have all the tools and success necessary to start off on another successful journey.

How do you create success?

You decide what you want.  The best way to do this is to set a goal and create a path to achieve it.  And if it’s a big goal, break it into smaller goals.  AND don’t just have one goal… have several!  It’s OK.  You’re running a small business, you know how to manage multiple projects and tasks.  Why on earth focus on one goal… your personality dictates that you can handle more than one thing at a time!

You don’t have to do multiple goals… but why wouldn’t you?  If it’s because you have more than you can handle and one goal is enough…  that’s perfect.  But if you are only concentrating on one goal because you read it in a book or that’s the advice you’ve always heard… then try multiple goals.  There’s nothing wrong with trying.

Here’s what I mean.  Create a goal to increase sales at the same time you create a goal to increase your personal contact with your current customers at the same time you create a goal to enhance your in-person experience.  Three goals.  If you switch to a goal setting technique it will be far easier to monitor your success.  Yes, it will take work to get used to this technique, but… if getting the bathroom cleaned daily becomes a goal, the goal does become a habit and you can next move onto the next goal of dusting one area of your store every day so the entire store becomes clean… and as you know “clean” will increase sales.

One final reminder… your goals do need to be specific, especially when you have employees helping achieve your goals.  If your goal is “clean bathrooms” this can mean very different things.  Create a check list, because it will help you know when success is attained.  PS: We just did this at our marina… and the bathrooms look fantastic!

Episode #106 – What Is Your One Great Goal?

What do you want?  This is the hardest part of running your business.  Because, just when you feel comfortable with your sales, you relax.  But, what do you really want?

The reason I ask this is because now is the time to set goals.  There’s a great quote out there to help you through struggle.  I used it way back on Episode #51 “Don’t Quit, Focus on Why”, it has to do with at the time you start you wish you were at the point you are now.

“If I quit now, I’ll be back to where I started
and when I started I desperately wanted to be where I am now.”

That is an important perspective.

Because, what do you really want?

The reason a lot of businesses fail is because people “stop”.  They get comfortable with sales and assume they will always continue, so they lose their fire to continue the grind.  Or something new they try just “doesn’t work”.  It’s not that they quit, but the competition keeps going.  So the gap widens.

It’s no different from wanting to lose 20 pounds and getting to 12 pounds lost, feeling much better and resuming bad habits, never losing the full 20…

If you “stop” it’s because you are choosing what you want now instead of what you want the most.  This means you like the sales you have so you take a little time off.  Well, that “little time off” felt great, and since you run your own business and you’re the boss you mentally believe that philosophy and take a “little more time off”.

Again, that’s fine.  If that is what you really want, PERFECT!

However, if you have a vision of a lifestyle, home, car, family, vacation, retirement… whatever IT is, you must continue onto that one great goal. Don’t let your “stop” become permanent.

Sales will not “always be there” – clients will not “always be there” – do not get lulled into a false sense of security in these areas.  Take the time to recharge, enjoy the climb, but create your big goal so you know you when you’ve achieved it and when must keep going!  Otherwise, you’ll be back to Episode #51 and wondering why you’re so frustrated!

Episode #49 Find Your Way With Your Why.

Have you ever walked into a business and wondered what the heck was going on?  The theme didn’t match the merchandise or the merchandise didn’t have any common reason to be together.  The most common place I notice this is in a restaurant, the menu is filled with, well, everything.  You have hamburgers, spaghetti and tacos all on the same page.  Or you look around and you can the new owners rented space without changing the decor of the old place.  More important you hope this isn’t your business (haha) – but you really need to take a look at your business with fresh eyes and see if your reality is matching your goals and your “why”.

Your “Why” has two different angles, you have a business why and a personal why.  I just talked about the business why… that’s the goal of the business, and when you walk into a place that doesn’t fit, match, or feel right… they’ve lost their why and as a result their way.

The other why is your personal reason for starting the business, it might have been so you didn’t have a boss, but now you realize your customers are your boss, or you realize that you did it to make money but found it’s a never ending money pit.  Therefore you’ve lost your why!

It’s time to get back on track and rediscover your why… because, guess what – it may have changed!  Take time to really figure out what you want for your business goal and/or your reason for having a business.  You’ve got to have a why.  When you do that, visit my goal setting tips at my website BigFishIdeas.com to put your why into an attainable goal.
