Wednesday: Midweek Motivation

Quote: “Commitment comes before results… both in life and the dictionary”

Today I was driving around, listening to a book, and this wonderful quote came through the speakers.

Sometimes quotes like this are a little to cheezy for me – but this one resonated with me. Especially since yesterday was consistency day… and consistency is commitment.  It started to make the gears spin in my head.

YES, we all want results. Yet… when it becomes difficult we stop.  We “think” we have the ability to commit, but then we talk ourselves out of it.

I say… let’s start recognizing that voice in our head and stop listening to it!  If we want results… commit to tuning out that negative voice in your head.  Commit to plowing through the difficulty and make it happen.

Today, listen FOR the voice but don’t listen TO the voice.

Episode #292 – Believe You Can, Don’t Just Think You Can.

“The ones who are bold enough to believe they can change the world are the ones that do”

How bold are you?

It’s funny, I typed the inspiration for today and I typed, “The ones who are bold enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do” – then I double checked it.  OOPS.  One small word, did you catch it?

BELIEVE

The ones who BELIEVE they can change the world do.

That is a very key distinction. You can think you can change the world but that is totally different from believing you can. If you want to create change in your business or life you must believe you can, otherwise… you’re just going through the motions.

However, when you believe you can create change, you will!  So, that leads to the next question… What do you want to change?  HA!  Sometimes, you simply think you don’t know, or is it you BELIEVE you don’t know what you want to change.  Again, that word comes to the forefront.

You know what you want to change. You know what you want to improve. So now admit it.  Go for it and simple believe that you will create the change.  There are lots and lots of “how to” books or articles out there to teach you to implement the change, but none will be worth the price of the book until you make that mind shift to belief.  And you know what… only you can decide to believe in yourself!  So why not start today.

Episode #262 – Everything You Do Is Important

“What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life.”

When you read today’s inspiration, think deeply. You have exchanged time in your life to read my blog.  YIKES. That means, at the end of your life, when you calculate all the things you did in your life, reading my blog was one of them.  WOW.  Thank you for reading!

But that’s just it. How you spend your time, or more important, the crazy stuff you waste your time doing, all adds up.

How many times have you binge watched a show, surfed the net a little longer than you planned, or went shopping just to get away.  Well, it all adds up.  Now here’s the awesome news.  While you are trading time in your life for the activities that seem to “waste” time…  You can’t possibly keep up a 100% valuable output day. You’ve got to take time to chill.  Otherwise you’ll burn out.

So while I’m an advocate of not wasting time, you need a balance.  Unfortunately there no such thing as a “work life balance” I laugh anytime I hear someone utter those words.  Your work is your life.  It’s not like you get those 8 or more hours back…  you make the effort to do whatever it is that makes you money.   You must enjoy your work because if you do not, your life is unbalanced.  It’s as simple as that.

How is this motivating?

It’s giving you permission to veg out.  The inspiration for today places too much emphasis on the go getter, non stop, hustle or else mentality.  There’s a point where you need to say, “am I enjoying the journey?”  If you feel like you don’t have time to breathe or that you are trading alternatives you do not like…

stop and regroup.

You started this business to avoid feeling this way. Focus on what is important to you, even if that means you go back to your very foundation and determine why you started your business.  But never should it make you feel like you question the importance of the task at hand.  I mean if it does… wow.  If you read today’s inspiration and thought to yourself, “that quote really turned my head because what I’m doing right now is not worth it”.  Then hopefully you have a new perspective and can determine a different plan forward.

I think it’s an outstanding quote.  But I think it’s outstanding in the respect that you should never “get behind the 8 ball”.  This quote should be a mental barometer or even a baseline. If you ever feel like what you are doing challenges your “I’m on my death bed evaluating how I spent my time” list… then you’ve got to make correction.

Keep this quote handy.  Put it on your wall.  Use it as your happy place to know exactly why you are working so hard at something you love!

Episode #68 – Work Hard AND Rejuvenate to Motivate Yourself

“I never dreamed about success, I worked for it.”  Estee Lauder

Gosh… that’s easy to say, however, you may not feel motivated – every day can feel like the same grind. Especially when you are trying to increase sales or increase traffic to your website. It feels like no one is out there! Probably because you’re doing this on your own, that’ s the lonely part of being a small business owner.  So the best thing to do is break your pattern!

Go for a walk. Listen to music. Find a TED Talk. Read a magazine.  Do something not related to your business at all.  Play with your dog.  Give your mind a break.  There are more ideas in my article “Ways to Stay Motivated as a Small Business Owner” on BigFishIdeas.com

You have to “Rejuvenate to Motivate” yourself!

Work hard! That’s where success comes from… but at the same time remember take a break.  It is hard to accept this because then you feel like you’ll get behind even more, however, if you can take a 15 minute or 30 minute break, it will help you stay fresh!

Episode #46 – You Can Only Move Toward or Away from Your Goals

There’s no neutral or staying on place with goals. Proper goal setting involves deadlines, therefore you can only move toward or away from your goals.  Small businesses have lots of roles to fill.  Ultimately you want to make money so your goal may be to increase sales for the day.   If you get distracted at work with a “crazy” customer problem or a maintenance issue in the bathroom and the result is it takes up your time for the day.  Your goal of increasing sales for the day was affected, you actually moved away from your goal.  Sure you can reset your goal, but it’s best to use the reset button because you’ve but 100% effort into achieving your goal and it needs more time, versus being distracted with a silly problem.

Keep moving toward your goals!  (Practice it every day with a daily goal, it’s a great habit to start!)

Read more about quick goal setting techniques in my BigFishIdea.com article on goal setting.  They you will learn about SMART goal setting (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reward, Time Orientated) – it’s a great technique.  Check it out.

I’d love your feedback… If you love this post, please “like” it!
