Episode#104 – Why is Your Goal?

Why is your goal?  There’s some funny English for you.  We’re missing a “that”.  Why is that your goal?  Why is your goal that?  But I say, “don’t change my question”.  I historically make up words, so today I thought, “self, I’m going to make up sentence structure.”

Why is your goal?

It makes perfect sense.  You have a goal, and you’ve put it on paper, but what is the why of the goal?

I’m a big supporter of the SMART goal planning method… the Strategic Measurable Attainable Reward Time bound method.   And you can sure put on paper that your goal is to lose 10 pounds by the end of June.  But… WHY????

Why is an important little question!

What is the why of your goal?

Do you want to lose the 10 pounds because you want to feel better, because you want to walk without getting tired, because it’s the beginning to 50 pounds, because you want to fit into a different shirt, WHY????

Ask this why of your business.  Why are you in business?  Answer: to make money, to not have a boss, to have freedom, to pay off debt, to save for a car, to pay for my child’s college, to produce a product that helps people… there are many, many why’s… “Why is your goal?”!?!

If you get a little upside down, backward, overwhelmed, and feeling confused.  Bring it all back to the simple question, “Why?”

No one can stop you when your “why” gets a massive injection of passion!

Episode #90 – You’ve Gotta Start! Soon You’ll Have a Beach

Do you see a beach or lots of grains of sand?  There’s nothing fun about one grain of sand… especially when it’s inside your shoe.  There’s nothing fun about one piece of gum, especially when it’s stuck to the bottom of your shoe (haha) and there’s nothing fun about one penny, what can you do with one penny?  However, the power of many is a pretty exciting thing.  That’s how you get a beach, gumball machine, and a bag of money!

Lewis Howes’ inspiration for today is spot on… and I have read Lewis Howes book, “The School of Greatness” a couple times… check it out – here are other book choices, too.  He believes in daily improvements.  I do too… it works, especially when it comes to social media and the integration to your small business!

Here’s the deal. You can wish you had, a bigger presence online, but you’ve got to start.  The where to start is a lot like picking the perfect grain of and from the beach (impossible) but if you simply start and pick one grain of sand… you can turn your wish into a reality!  Let’s take a look at my two month social media journey…

I started with a podcast (it didn’t even have a name… now it is the “Two Minute Commute”).  Then my BigFishIdeas.com website was updated…then I created this blog to link to the podcast and feed into the website.  Next I added Instagram.  Followed shortly by the Facebook component – both of which feed into the website.   Next I started posting to Linked-in.  My App went live and it has the blog posts and social media sites in addition to an interactive form to send me your small business success stories!  This past week I created a Twitter account and a hidden Pinterest board… that will be live soon. I’m getting close to a beach!  But it didn’t just magically appear.  It has morphed and twisted and been added on… you can do the same!  But you have to start.

Start small and focus.  Create a content mission statement to keep you focused.  And finally DO… START… and keep going. REMEMBER:  You don’t have to be everywhere… you just need to be where your customers are!

By the way… earlier I said there’s nothing you can do with one penny.  Well, here’s your awesome tip for pennies.  Next time you buy tulips throw one penny into the vase holding the water and tulips.  The penny makes the tulips stand up. Try it!

Back to social media… I’m curious, how much time do you spend on social media? Is it 5 minutes a day?  30 minutes a week?

Action Step
1- Write on a piece of paper all of the social media areas you’d like to have a presence in for your business… website, blog/podcast/Vlog, email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linked-In etc…
2- Check off the ones you have.
3- Pick one and create it today.  Just pick one!
4- As soon as it’s live… share your success tip on my app… it’s free! (SmallBusinessClubApp.com)

Episode #68 – Work Hard AND Rejuvenate to Motivate Yourself

“I never dreamed about success, I worked for it.”  Estee Lauder

Gosh… that’s easy to say, however, you may not feel motivated – every day can feel like the same grind. Especially when you are trying to increase sales or increase traffic to your website. It feels like no one is out there! Probably because you’re doing this on your own, that’ s the lonely part of being a small business owner.  So the best thing to do is break your pattern!

Go for a walk. Listen to music. Find a TED Talk. Read a magazine.  Do something not related to your business at all.  Play with your dog.  Give your mind a break.  There are more ideas in my article “Ways to Stay Motivated as a Small Business Owner” on BigFishIdeas.com

You have to “Rejuvenate to Motivate” yourself!

Work hard! That’s where success comes from… but at the same time remember take a break.  It is hard to accept this because then you feel like you’ll get behind even more, however, if you can take a 15 minute or 30 minute break, it will help you stay fresh!

If you do feel “alone” I’m glad you found this post, now make sure to “Join us” and Install our free App!  We’re building a community so it’s going to be a great way to help keep you and other small business owners motivated.  I just launched it yesterday… woo hoo!

PS: if you love my post… tell me by giving it a “like”!

Action Step
1- take a break.  Set the timer on your phone for 15 minutes and do something fun.  Walk, play with your dog, read a magazine. Get a way from your desk and break your pattern!

Episode #66 – Worry About Missed Opportunities Instead of Failure

What motivates you? If you’re not afraid of failure, are you afraid of missed opportunities?  When you don’t start or don’t try, you miss a whole series of opportunities because you don’t put yourself in the “right place at the right time.”

Today… try.

I mentioned a couple days ago that if you started blogging today and did it twice a week, in a month you’d have 8 posts.  That’s true.  But how about this, if you don’t blog, you’ll miss out on someone reading the information you share and being changed by it.

It’s time to create your corner of the web.  Pick the thing you are most drawn to… blogging (like this) which is a simple typing of your story.  Vlogging which is video storytelling.  Or Podcasting which is the equivalent of a radio program.   It’s your choice, which ever medium is most comfortable, choose and start.

A couple things to remember as you are starting…  It won’t be perfect.  Really, it shouldn’t be… the important thing is “doing”.  If you ask anyone if they like their first 20 posts, find comfort that they do not!  The other thing about starting, you can do this just for yourself.  Practice!  Write in Word on your computer (or hand write it and have someone else type it).  Press record on your phone and save it.  You can upload later.

Don’t get hung up on the technology…

As a small business it’s important to build your credibility online. This is one of the most effective ways to become a subject matter expert.  It’s the ongoing, fresh content, way… check out my article to learn more about becoming a subject matter expert.

PS: if you love my post… give it a “like”!

Action Step
1- Start
2- Pick one of the three, Blog, Vlog, or Podcast. Pick the one that is most comfortable.
3- TODAY… create one post.  Just start.

Episode #55 – It’s My Birthday!  Put in Hard Work to Achieve Goals

It’s My Birthday! – I picked this quote just for today… “Results don’t come here if there’s no effort there”

My grandma use to say, “it’s your birthday… do what ever you want” — I look back and still think this is a little bit of odd advice to give a seven year old, but it stuck!  Today is my birthday and I’m giving you a challenge.  Too many times you want to get something done, but just don’t want to put in the effort.  Well, it’s my birthday and I want you to accomplish something… TODAY.  Pick the something that’s been bugging you and just get it done.

To me, you have to set goals to keep on track so here’s a friendly reminder to put in the hard work to achieve success.  Check out my article on goal attainment for a long term goal setting process, you shouldn’t need this for today’s task… today’s task is what’s bugging you, right now…  like you need to clean your desk, etc.  (and if I hear any comments about cleaning my desk… remember it’s MY birthday)

Action Step

1- Identify one thing you want to change TODAY that’s been bugging you…
2- Create the path to fixing that one thing
3- Just get it done.

Episode #45 – Plant a Tree Today, Start Your Blog

When will you start your blog?  If you had started a year ago, blogging once a week, you’d have 52 posts today!  Just like planting a tree, the best time to have done it was in the past, but the second best time is today.   Take action, start your blog today… a month from now you’ll be glad you did!

If you’re worried about HOW to start a blog, don’t let that stop you, just start writing. Even if it’s just in a notebook or in your Word program.  If you have the content, someone else can set up the technology for you.  You just need to start, today.  It’s becoming more and more important to the changing world of Social Media Marketing.  If you read the article I wrote on Subject Matter Expert, blogging takes on a whole new importance.

Action Steps
1- Read my article, Subject Matter Expert at BigFishIdeas.com
