Episode #320 – Mouse Trap Mania!

“If you desire to build a better mousetrap, you should know something about mousetraps.” Randal Curry

Can you build a better mousetrap?  Probably not.   But can you speak about your business better than anyone else?  Yes.

Your customers have a great and possibly better understanding of using your product. But, you and you alone are the expert of your business.  As you go up the pyramid you might lose a little confidence, but right at the base you are the number one expert.

Here’s what I mean.  You may run a retail store that sells widgets.  You understand what your customers want, you understand your vendors, you understand your products.  If you moved to another state and started another widget store you would need to learn the local market, but the product knowledge you have would remain constant.  If you move up the ladder and buy a widget manufacturing plant to supply your widget store you have an entirely new learning curve.

Your store is your mousetrap. This means you are the expert of your business!  You have customers and they come to you as an expert.

Here’s the way to make your mousetrap better… share your knowledge!  You can build a better mousetrap simply by starting a blog, vlog, or podcast and owning your corner of the web!  All you have to do is start sharing.

A few things happen when you share your knowledge. First, your information becomes searchable.  Second, you develop social proof. Third, you become an expert!  It’s kind of crazy how much people will pay lots of money for online advertising and neglect the ability to grow traffic for free.

Episode #314 – The Reason You Must Use 3rd Parties To Build Social Proof…

“First you get credibility, then you get trust, and then you get relationship capital.“ RPeters

What I like about today’s inspiration is the direct relationship between credibility and relationships. When conducting business in person you have the ability to create trust with your interpersonal skills, while online it’s all about how you position yourself.

This positioning is achieved with the basic building block of credibility.  You’ve got to establish yourself as a Subject Matter Expert.  This is the strongest way to build social proof.  When you have social proof you have credibility.

Social proof is the recognition of others as to your success.  This can be achieved in a number of ways.  For example, I am a baton twirler.  Now I’ve heard it all before, both good and bad.  What I love about my sport is the vast spectrum of responses it garners.

Nearly everyone I know has twirled a baton before. They can demonstrate a figure eight, or even a flat spin.  Some will attempt a toss… but really that’s where it ends.  I’ve had people look me in the eye and say, “why would you waste your time doing that?” to “did you wear the white boots?”

So let’s see how to position myself… I am a competitive baton twirler.  I am a feature twirler.  Both try to re-position the activity.  Here’s where it gets fun… is it more impressive to say, “I twirl three baton” or “I twirl two baton fire” or “I’m a former national champion”?  Each of these three position myself with great authority.  How about if I say, “I’m a certified Judge” or “I competed for 17 years” or “I have over 400 awards” or “I coached two national champions”?  These also add credibility.  But what happens if I say, “I created an app for baton twirler with over 4,000 installs”.

The reason I mention these statements is to help you understand the power of words and positioning.  When I say, “I’m a baton twirler” it creates an impression that is controlled by the previous experiences of the listener.  However, when I position myself by adding context to the activity such as skill level, awards, activities, titles, or results it adds credibility.

Here’s why…

To be a former national champion required a 3rd party to hold a contest that I won.  To be a certified judge also required a 3rd party involvement.  The third party is very important to your Subject Matter Expertise.  Always list your achievements, certifications, and awards on your website and social media platforms that are based on a 3rd party!  Their credibility affects yours and this will help you own your corner of the web.

Episode #224 – New Concept in Positioning Yourself as a Subject Matter Expert

If we could sell our experiences for what they cost us, we’d all be millionaires.” ~Abigail Van Buren

Have you ever searched the web looking for the solution to a problem?  Roll Eyes.  Of course.  That’s why we use the internet.  We search for the answer… whether it’s what the weather forecast is… finding that favorite commercial from your youth… or how to potty train your toddler.  We search for solutions!

The reason we search for solutions is to prevent bigger mistakes.  Looking back, did you ever try to “solve a problem” yourself?  You struggled and… looking back… by simply seeking out the correct help you could have solved your problem much faster.  Think about it, have you ever tried to fix your computer yourself?  HAHAHA  How’d that go for you?   (it’s NEVER gone well for me).

This is the basis of expertise.  This is YOU.

When you open your store, whether in person or online, you are positioning yourself as the subject matter expert of the “whatever” you are selling! So when I say, it’s time to own your corner of the web, don’t be afraid that you don’t have the knowledge… you’re using it every day.

The importance of positioning yourself as a subject matter expert is to attract people to you!  In fact, if people say, “you should write a book” then go for it!  Think about writing small books, guides, fact sheets that your followers can download.  Maybe it’s a “first time buyer guide” that will help customers navigate the process of buying what you sell.

Again, this might be the time you start to lose confidence and wonder why anyone would want this… that’s NOT for you to decide!  If a customer comes up to you and asks you a question, and you tell them the process of navigating the sales process… bam!  This would be a helpful piece of information on your site.

Remember… you search the internet for answers and often stumble across subject matter experts that provide information you need, want and love!  Return the favor and start sharing your knowledge, now!
