Happy Thanksgiving!  I’m thankful you’re here.

Earlier this week the American Girl Doll magazine/catalog arrived.  I’m not a tribe member, but I did gain an appreciation of the doll’s following as my niece grew up.

She loved everything about the doll and as she got older she became an expert of the history and qwirks of each doll…

As I thumbed through the catalog I found just as much “joy” as I did 5 years ago when she was a buyer… well her mom was a buyer.

However… one thing caught my eye.

It’s this.

Elf on the Shelf… do you get the impact of this?  It’s a specifically designed American Girl Doll Sized Elf on the Shelf.

The brand and tribe following for this ONE product are INCREDIBLE.

A “toy” or “tradition” called Elf on the Shelf is SOOOOOOOO well branded, that you not only buy one for your home and family… but your freekin doll needs one, too.

What the heck?!?!

I’m not sure if I should run in fear OR amazement.

OK

I’m choosing amazement!  This is the most brilliant product line variation I’ve ever seen.  It’s not that Elf on the Shelf went into “Bunny on the Bar” or some other holiday requiring a plastic entity to lurk around and watch you…

NO!

They kept the brand and just made it smaller so your DOLL can (must) have it’s own Elf on the Shelf.

This is the ultimate example of marketing that doesn’t feel like marketing.

It’s tribe building that is worth elevating to it’s own shelf! (haha)

Well done.

OH!  BONUS!  Did you notice that only American Girl Rewards Members can buy the Tiny Elf?  I have no idea what’s involved in being a member… but dang it.  This small marketing gold mine just gets better.  You must have the privilege of being a member to even have the opportunity to buy super tiny elf…

REALLY WELL DONE.

I think I’ll invent “rocks in a box” and you can put it on your desk… then, when you get distracted, thumbing through your social media feeds…  you have to, I don’t know, tag me in a post with a photo of the rocks dumped on your desk…. or dumped in a glass… or dumped on a shelf next to your elf.

In other words, your task for today is to eat Turkey and celebrate how amazing the tiny elf concept is, cause I’m kinda jealous!

This is an amazing idea and it’s something you can do!

This is an immediate feedback opportunity.  Ask one question at the time someone checks out… and put it on a touch screen.

I stopped at a local convenience store and this popped up when the sale cashed out…

It’s a super simple question… how was the experience… just touch the red dot.

There’s no explanation of how to even use the touch screen.

It’s simple and the gal at the counter says they get lots of people that participate.  Imagine the trend statistics this creates.  You can see how your customers feel, immediately and make changes right away.

I had a good time at the dog food store yesterday.  It’s always fun to see what stuff they sell for dogs.

I’ve talked about it before, but I’ll repeat it… there’s an entire store devoted to dog food.  When you really want to see amazing marketing, just walk into one of these stores.

When it comes right down to the basics, you could buy food for your dog at the grocery store, and I don’t mean bagged kibble.  It’s just like human food.  But, there’s now a huge industry for the whoof whoof and thus, an entire store full of dog food!

So back to the “Try This” portion of the blog.

When I checked out I noticed on the counter a simple piece of paper.  Email your dog’s photo to the store manager and they’ll put on the in store photo frame!

This is EASY and IMPACTFUL!

It’s major marketing at the local level.

It’s also tribe building.  People love to see photos of their dog.  This makes their dog ultra cool!

Make It Your Own

It’s a bar. It’s a work of art!

Recently I was on vacation and I was super hungry for lunch.  After walking along the beach, a cute little restaurant/bar appeared.  When you walk in this restaurant it has an amazing first impression.  It’s probably the only bar decorated with bottle caps and colored lights.  What was once ordinary is now a focal point and cool piece of art.  It makes me wonder what the story is… did someone nail one bottle cap and it got out of control?  I don’t know, but it would be a cool story to put on their menu…

This business took a risk.  They did something unique and it worked.  What I like seeing is when a small business makes something all their own. I don’t mean make a piece of furniture, I mean they took ownership of what their company vibe is and expressed it in a unique way.  This can be accomplished with paint, words on a wall, or the front desk in an office.

Your mission statement on paper is critical to your day to day operations.  It helps to focus your process to ensure a great outcome. The problem with a mission statement is that it’s flat.  I’d love it if you took the opportunity to add a vibe and feeling to your mission statement.  Sure, your branding takes care of font and colors, but this task is a little different.  Ask yourself what feeling or emotion do you evoke when someone walks in your door?

Here are two ways to think about vibe/feeling.  Buy a hamburger.  It’s a grilled ground beef patty on a bun.  Now go and buy the hamburger at a fast food counter, the local greasy spoon, a sports bar, and a fine dining experience.  It’s still a hamburger but the vibe of each location is very different.  Next, go looking for a hotel room… you visit a roadside motel, an business traveler hotel, and a luxury resort.  Again, it’s a room you sleep in, but the vibe is completely different.

What vibe does your business give off?  Is this correct?  Do you want to change it…   Start to pay attention to the feeling your business creates.  Here’s how we’ve used this at our marina.  In the winter it’s difficult to sell boating in Minnesota.  Outside there’s a foot of snow, the wind is howling and the lake is frozen.  What I’ve done in the past is create a summer vibe.  When someone visits our store they’ll see fresh flowers, feel a warmer room because I slightly turn up the heat, it smells good because I plug in air freshners that smell like coconut (sun tan lotion), and they hear some great Jimmy Buffet summer music, and finally, as a distraction to the outdoor windows I rotate beautiful photos on our monitors.  It’s not cheesy or overbearing, but it has a summer vibe.

Action Step
1-Evaluate the Vibe/Feeling/Emotion of your business.  Write down three words to describe it from the customer experience.

2- Is this the vibe you want?

3- What can you do to enhance the current vibe or what can you do to change it… for example, add a water feature or plants,  music…   When will you implement this???
