If you were at a party and someone came up to you, stepped into your space bubble, and started drilling you with questions, what would you think?

Oh My Gosh… creep alert!

How about if you visit a website, then the next thing you know every time you open Facebook there is an ad from that site… or you open a news site and the same thing happens, you’re being followed all around the web with this site!

Creepy.

And finally… what happens if you love a store, you sing up for their email, and then it’s like you’re FLOODED with email after email after email… it just doesn’t stop – or it does when you unsubscribe.  haha

What’s my point?

It’s this… you can’t rush your relationship… whether it’s in human life or infinity customer world.  Seriously… if you start to send emails quick and overwhelming – you will scare someone away much in the same way when you’re cornered at a party by a creeper!

Build the relationship by being the leader a tribe is looking for, but don’t be creepy!  You want to provide useful information…

But… on that note… you also want them to be an Infinity CUSTOMER not an Infinity Friend… avoid the friend’s zone!  While you provide information you also want to sell.  Establish that while you’re developing the tribe – the underlying purpose is because you’re in business.

This is important… it’s easy to attract a tribe but you want to attract a tribe that you can offer products they desire and ultimately purchase.  If you get stuck in the friends zone this won’t happen… if you get stuck in the creeper zone this won’t happen.

You are building Infinity Customers… create the tribe, provide information, but always remember to offer items for sale.

When you want to sell something… tell a story about it.

Seriously.

Have you ever been to a clearance bin at a discount store. It’s a sad place.

The bin is huge and it’s full of clutter — and the one thing I always imagine being in the bin is snow scrapers attached to a mitten.

Have you ever used one?  They are “ok” but when you sell a snow scraper- do you demonstrate it scraping snow…

NO – boring.

Look at this…

Now read the description… “fur ice scrapers keep things fabulous” -WHO can pass that up.

I want to be fabulous when I scrape ice… I mean I really do!

It’s short… sweet… has a fuzzy boomerang and it is fabulous.

Try this small change item of telling a story about the product to increase your sales!

The past couple days I’ve been binge watching videos on Youtube.  The irony it’s been videos of Disney.

I can’t figure out why binge watching is so satisfying.  And by satisfying I mean a love/hate relationship.  You get so sucked in to watching, but then you’re mad at yourself for wasting so much time!

What is it that brings you back?

These videos evoke great memories.  You see… I’ve been to Disney World, probably betwen 80 and 90 times… I’ve lost count.

You’d think that being to Disney so many times that learning something new would be rare… it’s entirely the opposite.

I watch these videos, find new places to go, agree with the blogger’s opinion, relive memories, and imagine my new trip.

Then get mad at myself for wasting time!

Did you see what I just did?

The REASONS I like watching videos about a place that I like to go is because I found a tribe I belong to… I don’t have to talk with the other members.  I just watch video after video after video. I do this because I like the content.

It’s funny to read the comments… “I want to go” “I didn’t know ___” “OH, bring me back” and then response after response with 80+ likes.  It’s amazing engagement.

This is how to build a tribe!

The blog will go to restaurants, hotels, rides, but here’s the hook… Every single post is titles “top 4 best ___”  “5 things you didn’t know about ____” “Cleanest ____”

Now while the vlogs are amazing — it’s the title that grabs you.

Remember this.

You may create the most amazing content for a tribe to bond with – but if the title doesn’t make you open the email or stop to read the post, the content is useless.

Create intriguing titles to form a tribe.

Yesterday we talked about being a Subject Matter Expert in a specialty.   The same advice holds for the content you create and customers you attract.

You need to find your niche.

The best thing you can do is find your unique selling proposition (USP) – the USP is the thing that makes you… YOU.

My dog is a unique soul.  He has many “moods” and regularly goes to doggy day care.  I love it because he gets really tired.

However, just like a human… there are days that Mr. Pancake is moody.  I’m not kidding — he doesn’t want to listen and occasionally I’ve said, “nope… no day care today” – but there are times, I’ll bring him and just say, “it’s a Pancake kind of day”.

The employees all know what that means.

I refer to it as “the magic that is Pancake”

Well… you need to find your magic.  The USP is your magic!  It’s the thing that makes your business special.

Maybe it’s a clean bathroom… or a bathroom with music… or a bathroom that tells jokes.  I went to a restaurant in California that had a joke track playing instead of music.  It was awesome.

It could be the theme, vibe, or feeling you get when you visit a business.

At the marina, our USP is our forklifts.  We have a service where we launch boats, like a valet service, but we do it with a one-hours notice.  However, when you visit, you will see the forklifts… for kids it’s a big deal… for adults – they’re also impressed.

But forklifts are the thing that make our marina different from other marinas around our lake.

When we make content we focus on forklifts.  It is the magic that is us.   Our literature has forklifts, our website has forklifts, our letterhead… and even our sweatshirts.

Find your USP, make it your magic, and include it in your content!

Can you be a Subject Matter Expert for a Bakery?  Maybe.

There are lots and lots of different types of bakeries.  Off the top of my head there’s the bakery at a restaurant, the bakery in the grocery store, a mass bakery that send cookies across the country, the bakery that creates wedding cakes, and a cupcake store.

They all create baked goods.

So… my original question, can you be a Subject Matter Expert for a Bakery?  I argue that you can but not as a whole for the entire industry, but for a specialty… yes. Absolutely.

If your bakery does not serve pie, you cannot be a Subject Matter Expert of pies, however, if you have won an award for a cupcake flavor or cake design, you are an expert.

Someone outside of the industry has recognized you.

Even without the awards your secret power is hidden in one aspect or specialty of your business.

so… yes, everyone can be a Subject Matter Expert and the beauty of this entire discussion is that the internet is so large AND easy to access that there’s a niche for you.

You just must be willing to do it.

If you feel overwhelmed by saying your an expert at the bakery… try being an expert at creating woven crusts on pies… or two toned frosting for cupcakes… or, you get my point.

In your industry there is a need for your expertise – this is what you need to communicate and it will attract your tribe.

Today, take 10 minutes, use a brainstorm session, and explore each of your profit centers… ask, “what do I do really well?”

You don’t have to reveal your “secret sauce” but there is a process or procedure that is unique to you, emphasize this and attract your ideal customers that also understand the importance of this process/innovation.

It’s an excellent way to find your Unique Selling Point or Unique Selling Proposition.

Now, actually do this… it’s very easy to read and think, yeah…that’s a good idea.  But pick up your phone, set a 10 minute timer… or just yell at siri and ask her to set a timer… start brainstorming!
