When you’re looking to create a bond with your customers, the most effective tool is to create stories where the customer can become the hero.

This “hero” concept is where they can visualize themselves using the product.  The easiest example is to watch any fast food commercial.  You will always see a family with the food and happy kids eating what they like to eat, smiling and showing approval to their parents for the excellent decision.

Translation, mom/dad are the hero for picking the place to eat with the food I like.

Easy concept.

But then you look at your advertising and just can’t “figure out” how you can possibly make a hero out of your customer.

After all, you sell T shirts.

So how can the customer be the hero, it’s just a T shirt. Hummmmm well, if your T shirt is a gift, imagine the smiles on their face when they open the present and see your T shirt.

The best way to accomplish the “goal of hero” is to actually imagine yourself as the customer and what will make them the hero.

NOW… why is this important?  Because if you want to develop an email marketing program that works and generates income, you must create a tribe!

The tribe of loyal customers ready to buy things.

Today’s quote is such a good reminder.  Anyone can sell a T shirt but they can only become a hero with YOUR T shirt.  Learn how to make heros and you switch from selling products to creating a brand.

You want a brand.

There are so many quotes you can look at that give words of inspiration to change your life… the when’s the 2nd best time to plant a tree… what you believe you achieve… all of these things imply

Change

If you do not like what the heck is going on, right now, you can change it.

AND

You don’t have to wait.

You can change right now… it doesn’t have to be the super duper large change, it can be the small altering of a habit.

The fun thing is, this “small altering of a habit” is the start that brings you on a journey to a new habit.

Something so simple as you want to run a marathon.  You can’t just decide to run a marathon and next day… woo hoo you did it.  But the moment you think, “I want to run a marathon” – take action, look up a video on tips, take action on the tips – what ever it might be, like joining a marathon group, getting a coach, running… just take action.

This is exactly what you need to do for ANY goal.

Take action, and do that action immediately.

So the only question left is, “Who do you want to be?”

What’s your story?  Let’s back up…What is a story?

The power of marketing stories can escape us as we talk about a product features and benefits.

I was talking to a customer today and relayed the basics of our Dry Stack Storage — I’ll back up… Dry Stack is where we store boats on racks in a warehouse.  We store them three boats high… then use a forklift to retrieve the boat an put in the lake with a 1 hour notice.

SO back to my story

(see how I did that)

I was on the phone explaining the hours and specs of the boat needed to fit.

Well, that’s just not fun.

What’s more fun is showing a video of how we insulated the warehouse (might not sound exciting – but it is a cool video)

Another story was watching the wedding proposal that took place on our dock where our crew helped decorate the customer boat…

Stories happen all day long.

It could be the story of receiving a new shipment of products and unboxing them.

Lots of times we think stories are the history of our business or our about me section on the website.

And that’s not a content story.

The content story is the thing that allows you to relate, one on one, to your customer.

It’s not history, it’s not features/benefits, it’s not hours of operation– your friend doesn’t want to hear that… your friend wants to know that you had a cake for your co-worker’s birthday, your friend wants to see a video of you shoveling the snow on the sidewalk outside your store, your friend wants to see your behind the scenes action.

This is a great way to get your customer to bond with you and convert that customer into a loyal tribe member!

You are responsible for telling your story… we no longer “sell ourselves” we share stories.

Today take a minute to tell one story about something… anything… just tell it!

Today.  Stop.  And appreciate what you’ve done.

I’m serious.

We’re in the middle of the 4th quarter crunch.  There’s time to make last minute gains and a push to the New Year.

But look back (at least for a quick moment)

This will help you in HUGE ways.  When you’re talking to customers, and by talking I mean writing an email or speaking in person… maybe I should say “communicating”.

When you are communicating with your customers, the confidence you have will give an automatic boost to your credibility.

But to gain that confidence you must stop and recognize all that you have done.

It’s so easy to say “yep I hit a sales goal” or “Yep, I won that award” but the goal or the award are the capstone of an entire journey.

My cousin opened a yoga studio, of her own.  I mean she actually bought her own building.  She’s been teaching yoga for almost a decade, so she has a following… but she took a leap, remodeled a building, hosts events, and has students that respect and pay her!

Last weekend she had a special event with a guest teacher and packed room.  I said, look at just how much you’ve accomplished to get to today.   All the training, practice, mentoring you’ve done.

It’s not that she opened a studio, but she’s changed lives.

She was busy focusing on the next thing coming up (class in two hours) but just like her… you need to stop and appreciate where you’re at, right now.

The credibility you share with your tribe is not just in the words you say, awards you’ve won, but it’s in your actual day to day actions.  Your actions right now are only possible from all the hard work you did to just before reading this!

Congratulations.

Now get back to work. 🙂

This business decided to make their own in store promotions.  It’s very simple plastic display frames and artwork on their computer – but if you’re looking for Cyber Monday special, why not advertise to an audience when you have their attention, AND they’re in your store!

This is a simple and fantastic idea… just take some time and make your own in store promotions, then display them!

Today I was driving around, listening to a book, and this wonderful quote came through the speakers.

Sometimes quotes like this are a little to cheezy for me – but this one resonated with me. Especially since yesterday was consistency day… and consistency is commitment.  It started to make the gears spin in my head.

YES, we all want results. Yet… when it becomes difficult we stop.  We “think” we have the ability to commit, but then we talk ourselves out of it.

I say… let’s start recognizing that voice in our head and stop listening to it!  If we want results… commit to tuning out that negative voice in your head.  Commit to plowing through the difficulty and make it happen.

Today, listen FOR the voice but don’t listen TO the voice.
