I think this quote is the understatement of the year.

Traditionally when we have thought about shifting customer needs we have concerned ourselves with trends or seasons…right?

There are people that remember the mortgage crisis or even the attacks of September 11… well, those are the shifting customer needs we are discussing right now.

In a seasonal trend, you take mittens off the shelf and replace with swim suits. It’s pretty manageable.  You will understand that the calendar dictates your next move…

But now… right now, what the heck are you suppose to do?

A month ago we were just past Valentines Day and heading toward St. Patrick’s Day… change your color scheme from red to green.  Your customer need shifted from heart candy to green beer… well, you get my point.

But shifting from February 25 economy roaring to March 25 shelter in place… all of this without a mass tragedy one time rip the band aid off occurrence… it’s surreal, right?

So what do your customers need?

Your customers need stability.  They are living in an insecure world.  You feel it… and you experience it.

But how do you give that stability… well, look at your core business and what do you actually sell?  Do you dance lessons which are a way to foster the growth and confidence of the child? You can still provide that.  You may be giving video lessons… but how can you help the parent? Can you provide an article and extra assignment for the parent to do a practice check list?

Think of your basic product – not what you sell but WHY you sell.  WHY does someone actually buy your product or service.

Focus on that WHY and provide more love and attention in this area.  This is how you bond with your Infinity Customers and keep them around until we all achieve certainty

The virus is awful.  Schools closed, restaurants closed, businesses closed. 

There are lots of memes on the internet… OK, my favorite is the one that says, “in about 3 weeks we’ll find out what everyone’s natural hair color is”  Yep, my roots are already showing, ugh.

But here’s the deal.

After all the “fun” of being stuck in your home turns to crazy walls closing in on you… what can you do as a business to help serve your customers?

Look at this example…

What a super helpful post!  It’s great for the company to provide easy goodwill.  They sped up the film to demonstrate the exercises and added subtitles.  What a great idea.

How can you do something like this?

At our marina we have ice on our lake… but what we are doing is promoting businesses that are part of our community by sharing information with our tribe such as which are still open for take-out. 

There is something you can do to help your community.  Whether this is your own customers or by sharing your audience.

Serve when you can!

There is something about enjoying the journey.  If you don’t enjoy the journey why do it?

Think about road trips.  I remember a road trip to Florida a couple years ago, I thought I’d hate it… after all, Minnesota is a long way from Florida.

BUT… it was fun.  When the road trip was though about as part of the trip it because a fun activity.

Sure hopping on a plane is easier.  3.5 hours from Minnesota and you are enjoying palm trees… it takes a good 18 hours by car before the first palm tree is seen.  And that can be a hard drive. 

But stopping along the way, just to enjoy the present is an entirely different experience from the lonely highway passing you by.

Keep this thought in mind as you are creating content and building relationships with your customers.

If you are creating content simply to create it and have something to post… it will be a lonely journey. 

But if  you switch your focus to bonding with your customers and creating amazing topics, tips, hints, behind the scenes sneak peeks…they will grow with you and become part of your journey. 

This completely transforms your conversation. 

So get out there and enjoy your journey.  Start with today.

If you had a customer standing in front of you, right now, what would you talk about?  What is happening at your business or what is happening in your industry that they need to know… 

Take that answer swirling in your head and write it out for them… but write as if you are talking to one person, hanging out in your car on the way to Florida… if you’re in Florida… head north. 

But make sure you chat, chat, chat!

That’s what I thought — if you’re anything like me, you have to fight the constant internal battle to dismiss anything you don’t understand.

Well, dumb things.

Yet… at times, when you stop and understand the “why” behind the dumb thing, it suddenly makes sense and it’s not so dumb.  It might not be how you’d do it or even something you’d want to do – yet there it is.  It’s not dumb.

Today – make the effort to stop the dumb and stupid things going on in your head telling you something is dumb or stupid!

If consistency leads to success… does it matter what you’re consistent at?  YES!

You need to be careful what you are doing consistently.  For Tribeology to work you need to develop a relationship with your customer to build loyalty and transform them into a tribe of people that trust you.

OK.

Here’s what I mean about why it matters at what you are consistent at…

I’m in the boating industry… sounds cool right?

Usually.

In Tribeology I teach that you need to post/email consistently.  It’s critical that you pick a time and adhere to it… if you are going to post once a week make sure it’s the same day and time…  This blog has a schedule and “usually” the posts arrive in the morning.

OK

SO back to that boating industry thing.

Let’s say I posted photos of aqua blue water with white sand beaches, palm tree sunsets, 75′ yachts, and a some navigational tips about over night float plans…

My customers would ditch me in about 4 seconds.

Why?

We have navy blue water in Minnesota… no palm trees, more cottonwood and pine, there are zero white sand beaches… they’re golden brown, the largest boat around here is 32′, and if you stay out over night on this lake… yeah, you really don’t.

Do you see what I mean?

The phrase GIGO comes to mind, Garbage In Garbage Out. 

I teach that posting consistently is appropriate, but the content is critical to your success.  You must know your audience’s likes/dislikes to give them the content they desire so your consistency is effective.

Otherwise you will just get GIGO and you want SISO Success In Success Out.

Have you ever stood at the free throw line, bounced the ball, and shot… and made it?

DANG!

Best feeling ever… right?

So why don’t you play professional basketball?  I mean you made a free throw…

It’s because you won’t put in the work to make consistent free throws!

Everyone can do something good… once… but the key to success is the to be good consistently!  This is what takes practice and discipline.

When you create your core product or service at your business you spent a great deal of time perfecting it… and you still do this.  The reason you are successful is because you continue to be consistent with your results.

The same is true for your Infinity Marketing Machine… you need to be consistent with your content.  It’s important to share information with your tribe regularly.  Otherwise they will miss you and they’ll leave.

As you plan your day, take five minutes to develp your consistency plan.  Will you post once a week, three times a week… and what time of day… be very specific.  Being consistent once a week is more valuable than posting four times a week this week, none next week, and twice in one day the following week.

You need to be consistent!

Remember back to your dating days… that time when you “put yourself out there” to meet someone to spend the rest of your life with…  maybe it worked, maybe it didn’t.

But why didn’t the date or worse yet… why didn’t the relationship work?

Most excuses come down to trust.  Think about it, if some cheated, spent money on the credit cards without you knowing… both are trust issues.

The funny thing is, as we are developing or Infinity Marketing Machine we have 5 C’s to work with – Credibility, Content, Consistency, Customers, Cash… well, the very first C and every Monday we talk about Credibility.

Credibility is your trustworthiness.  Even when we focus on your status as a Subject Matter Expert – at the base we are still focused on trust.

Your trust with your tribe.

If you have a good leader… you will follow.  If you have a bad leader… you question EVERYTHING.

When you have trust, you have loyalty.

Building trust is the effortless way to loyalty.  But that does not mean building trust is effortless.  It’s actually far from it.

To build trust you must have credibility and often one great way to do this is to receive honors and awards from third party sources.

An excellent opportunity is with your local Chamber of Commerce or your local newspaper that runs a “best of” series each year.  Get customers to vote for you or your business.

Another opportunity is with testimonials.  Now, a testimonial is a little different from a review.  They are typically more positive because you’ve asked a customer for their words.  A review… yikes… that is uncontrollable.  Hopefully good, but sometimes not.  🙂

As you get going with your Monday, think about building trust.

Look at your local paper and Chamber of Commerce and find out what awards you might apply for, and then also ask for testimonials from key customers to use in brochures or on your website.

Both ideas are fantastic avenues to great social proof!

Both are excellent resources for building trust.

And trust is the number one way to loyalty… and loyalty transforms customers to a tribe.

I remember attending a conference  a couple years back… and by “a couple years” I mean at least 4 years.  The crazy thing is I remember something the speaker said.

She said, “How many of you have an employee that is cranky, hostile, lazy, or just mean?”

Everyone in the room had their hand in the air in agreement.

Then she said, “… Annnnd you’re paying this person to act this way?. hummmm”

That’s how she started her presentation.

Again, how many presentations have you watched or attended and what do you remember of the sessions from at least 4 years ago?

My point is… this was a very powerful and impactful statement.

But what if YOU’RE the cranky, hostile, lazy or mean person?

What?

Yes… you now own the business and others work for you… so I’m just sayin you may still have a problem.

But it’s more than that.  Even if your not cranky or mean… what if you come to work and you are not leading.  What if you are going through the motions with a “good enough” mentality.

Now, I assume that most of you reading this are interested in your businesses because you are seeking insight for improvement… otherwise, why read blogs.

Yet… today’s quote is still here for us to read.

How are you acting?

The reason I mention this today is because my system of creating a tribe and offering products is kinda a “new marketing” concept.

Last week I was at a boating conference and I worked out a wholesale/drop ship relationship.  I have no idea how much I’ll sell… but if I don’t have to carry inventory or pack up stuff to mail… I’m pretty excited.

To get to that agreement, I just said, “I build a tribe and offer items to buy” so I plan to create offers.  I have no idea how much will sell weekly, but it’s not a traditional store front where people find me and buy stuff.  (although I have that function too).

Both the sales rep and his manager just looked at me.

I could tell they were processing what I just said.  “I build a tribe and offer items for them to buy”  It didn’t freak them out.  It was just new.

But my reputation and consistent behavior was the reason they said “yes”.

As you are building your Infinity Marketing Machine pay attention to credibility, our Monday topic.

Sure… you are building your tribe and they need a credible leader… but you are also building relationships with mentors, distributors and sales people.  They need to trust you as well.

Your “About Me” section on your website can be a powerful tool.  Today, take a look at it and see what needs to be updated AND what you can do to enhance it.

Set those credibility goals and get to work!

The Infinity Marketing Machine is based on a 5C pillar system of Credibility, Content, Consistency, Customers, and Cash.  That’s why I’ve chosen this blog to spend each day on a different “C”.

But you know what’s fun…

When I find a quote that says something very similar… and that’s today’s topic for credibility!

Money is not cash… it’s the “THING” that makes trading two wants equal.  It would be hard to be a dancer that wants gum from the convenience store and find a store owner that appreciates a single leap enough to trade for gum.

However, if the dancer sells tickets to a performance and accepts money for the tickets, the dancer can go to the convenience store to get gum.

Normally I’d use chocolate chip cookies for my examples… but I’m trying to cut sugar out of my diet and I dislike gum.

SO… back to the quote and how it relates to our 5C system.

Money is credibility, credible relationships, character and competence.

When you build your Infinity Marketing Machine – you provide content that attracts a tribe… and you must provide that content consistently to build trust.

This trust is your action and follow through which is your relationship trust and is different from the trust you gain as a Subject Matter Expert based off your character.

But the character trust is what makes your content reliable and worth coming back again and again as you consistently build your relationship.

Eventually the customer turns to a tribe that you offer items for sale that you know they desire and BOOM…that’s when your skills and trust transforms into money that you can use to buy gum.

The dancer showcases all of her Subject Matter Expertise on a stage to an audience willing to trade money for a ticket to see her provide content they will enjoy, but the cash is just the equalizer to allow her to buy gum.  It’s the trust that brings them into the theater.

Build trust and eventually you’ll be able to buy gum.
