Why oh why does no one understand me?  Do you ever feel this way at your business… you put an ad out in the paper, yet the phone doesn’t ring or worse, you get crazy people that call?

Here’s a tip.

You are no longer in control of your brand.  I know, that is a bummer – especially when your business is YOU.  You work the long hours, you take the risks, and then some “crazy” writes a gut wrenching awful review of a transaction.

OH MY – it hurts, doesn’t it.

WHY?  Why does it hurt?  Because they are writing about a transaction and you are reading it personally.

That doesn’t mean you can discount what happened… after all, learning from the negative review is one of the biggest things you can do to switch gears and make a better product or service.

But this doesn’t make it hurt less, especially when you’re running on little sleep!

Where does this leave you?  Well, when you accept that you are not in control of your brand it may feel like you’re floating out in the ocean, by yourself, on a raft.  However, you do have some control.

Your control starts at the VERY beginning of the transaction – waaaay before you get to a point of disagreement.  It starts even before they are a customer.

It starts when you make a solid decision of WHO you want to work with.  You need to develop your ideal customer, your avatar, and then 100% go out there and find them.  This is your absolute most favorite person in the world to work with… they probably love your work, pay on time with a smile, and lift you up.

YES… you can have this magical interaction – but you need to make that decision, now.

One other piece of advice, when you have that “crazy” learn from it.  You may need to enhance your written policies and procedures to protect yourself in the future.

But as always, it’s best NOT to dwell.  Get the solution and move to the next transaction — the more time you spend on negative, you’re missing opportunities to make money with your ideal customer!

Ever had a lazy day?  One where you simply did not want to do anything… sure!  We all have those days.

Then you turn on the TV and you see some amazing sports finish.  Maybe it was Tiger Woods winning the Masters, or the Marine with leg cramps that crawled across the finish line of the Boston Marathon.   Both kept going.

Now… It’s not that they’ve ever had a lazy day.

But this is something to think about — when you have a lazy day, meaning you’re “stagnant” you are not only not gaining ground – BUT… think about this… you are actually losing ground because someone else is moving forward!

I don’t want to stress you out — but let’s think about this… there are three people — the person in first is 5 steps ahead of you and the person behind you is one step away… if you stop and everyone goes forward – the person behind you is now even and the person in front of you gained a step!

OMG.

Don’t stop AND change your mind set to “If you’re not growing you’re actually going backward”

Every business owner is a leader.  Even if you don’t think of yourself as a leader… you are!

It’s hard to believe but when you place an ad and customers call you, you’ve already started the process toward leader and follower.

When you start to look at the relationship, especially your role as a leader, you will find it much easier to think of yourself as a Subject Matter Expert.

The purpose of being a Subject Matter Expert is to build trust among your customers and help them transition to being a part of your tribe.  This comes from sharing your knowledge, whether in a blog, vlog, or podcast.

Information becomes a gift!  A little surprise in their day.  Think about the times you’ve searched for anything online.  Like this morning.  I woke up and had pain in my leg.  I was able to search and find a “Subject Matter Expert” that taught stretching exercises… and guess what… relieved my pain.

What is it you can do for your tribe?  How can you ease their pain?  I’m getting right down to the base of the issue… but you are eliminating pain.  Even if you are a dance studio and it’s a happy interaction!  Ultimately, the parent wants their “pain” of not knowing the best activity for their child to be solved!

You can solve this.

But only if you’re willing to lead…

A lot of times when you prepare your marketing goal you emphasize the most powerful feature… but lots of times we overlook the treasure.

The treasure is the most common thing.

Now I love this example because it’s actual junk!  It happens to be a very small and often overlooked thing… a water spout… that is transformed into beautiful flowers.

But look at this post, it’s not saying “come buy our spout flowers for $10.00” it’s showing a beautiful photo.   A photo that you understand are flowers, but are not traditional flower colors so you stop and read. That’s when you see they not natural and are actually JUNK!

This type of photo is a great way to capture attention.  But the reason it is such an impactful post is that it’s timely.  Look around your store and see what is timely and wrap your post topic around it.

The junk flowers could be posted at any time of year because the business sells them… however, when you twist your post to revolve around timely topics… WOW you really get a much bigger bang for your buck!

What is a beautiful thing about your business?  What is it that you can feature that stops customers in their tracks?

This is a big money small change hint that can impact your social posts.

Look at this example…

The fun thing is… when you flip through your feed and come across it, at first glance it looks like a regular motivational quote.

But on a closer glance… it’s actually a great way to promote the business which is a real estate group.

SO while you may see the photo and think, “ahhhhhh that’s amazing.  If only I could…?” the answer is their business, right there in the comments!  Right there making it possible.

It’s a beautiful way to strike at the emotion of your customers.

Seek this out.  Look to ways you can attack the emotions.  Whether it’s a lifestyle, a better way of life, a memory, a relationship.  There is someway to get to the essence of health, wealth, or love.

Get this right and you will increase your cash!

Ahhhh the ultimate test of patience is understanding that Delay is not Defeat.  Often I have to remind myself of this small, quick, little, phrase when things just don’t seem to be moving fast enough!

You know those days… the days you feel like the cartoon character running from the anvil that’s about to hit you in the head but you’re stuck running in place.

OH this is how I felt yesterday.

I was trying to get in contact with our tech support for our new website… you see it’s our scheduling site for pontoon rentals.  Well, they updated the pricing but forgot to update the calendar for July.

Therefore, I had people making reservations for July 4 on Wednesday instead of July 4 which is really on Thursday!  UGHHH.  It’s one of those moments you just get to wait.  “patiently”.  There’s nothing you can do… you know you have a problem, you know it will be solved, it’s not a defeat… it’s just a delay.

So hang in there!

Why do you need to position yourself as a Subject Matter Expert?  Because it builds credibility.  It’s as simple as that!

Now I get it that it’s “uncomfortable” to brag about yourself, but it’s not really bragging… you’re leading.  Leaders need to sell themselves.  Think of a politician, they need to give many speeches that share their platform, they hand out a flier that shows their accolades, they develop a website that also lists accomplishments. WHY? so they earn trust that they will perform the job they are seeking.

You are doing the same thing!

Whether it’s a real world business or your online presence in a store or website, there needs to be a section devoted to YOU – thus, the “about me” page.

This is where you have an opportunity to “sell” yourself.  The reason you do this is because people want to buy from people!  They do not want to buy from businesses… that’s where the small business has HUGE opportunities!

You are given the advantage of being approachable.  Therefore… USE IT!

It might seem awkward at first, but think of it in “real world” terms… when you introduce yourself or you talk with a customer, do you ever mention things about yourself that lend to your expertise?  Such as, how many years you’ve been in business or hang a diploma/certification on the wall?  These things give social proof as to WHY someone should trust you…

I’m going to give you another reason… when you position yourself as a subject matter expert you “own it” – if you choose to sell your business, do you think “that’s it”?  Let’s say you’ve owned a dance studio for 25 years… you build a mailing list, you’ve got a reputation for excellent dance productions… but you’re done.  Business sold.

Now what?

Well… you still have all the knowledge of creating dance recitals, ordering costumes, motivating teams for competition, coordinating team travel… but without positioning yourself as an expert over the 25 years, you start from ZERO after you sell the business.

NOW… if you have a blog DURING the 25 years under your own name and then you go to sell the business… you still have 25 years worth of blogging, stories, and PROOF of your expertise…  This is VALUABLE!!! You can consult, create a book, or online seminars.  You continue with your personal brand.

Separate yourself from your business and create your subject matter expert status! This is SUPER important!
