Episode #337 – It’s a Chalk Board, It’s a Clip Board, No It’s a Calendar!

If you’ve got a large wall space, this is a great idea!  If you’ve got a small wall space, it’s still a great idea, you just might need to modify it.

I was leaving the grocery store and I saw this really cool large wall calendar!  It’s awesome.  The clip boards hang on nails… that means you can just move the clip boards around each month.  The clip boards are chalk… so you can write the numbers on them, or the holiday…  and finally, they’re clip board!  You can put coupons or fliers on special days, too!

It just seems like a very creative way to make your in store promotions personalized!

I said early on that if you don’t have a big wall space you’d need to modify… you might utilize this for a special of the week or other centralized customer information location — it’s just a great way to draw attention and regularly update, without being really expensive!

Give it a try.

Episode #306 – How Many Photos is Enough?

“Everyone who’s ever taken a shower has an idea.  It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference.” ~Nolan Bushnell

Don’t want to spend a lot of money… but want a big impact?  Create a photo book!

We used these photo books at the Minneapolis Boat Show!  They are wonderful.  Our crew member put a lot of time into them… and you know what… they were worth every minute!  They tell a story, well not A story – they tell OUR story.

Here’s the funny part, we did not take photos for the books.  We had great photos and decided that a photo book would be a great tool to help sell our services!

In Minnesota we have a difficulty with winter and boating… we market our services, but when there is 2 feet of snow on the ground it’s hard to get a great idea of what we do.  Some customers can visualize it, but others… can’t.  That’s when we bring summer to the customer via flip books.

It’s super easy to make a great book online.  The reason I mention this idea is because we needed to plan ahead and get great photos of our services so we could use them in the winter.

As a Big Money Small Change idea – take photos, and take a lot more!  You never know when you’ll need them… but it’s much better to have them when the idea comes to you!

It may be a good idea to hire a photographer.  Smart phone camera are great, but there’s something about a professional photographer way of seeing things that becomes helpful!  Again, you might not know why you’ll need these photos… but you’ll be happy you have them!

Episode #126 – Quit Competing and Get Creative for Maximum Success.

“The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” SFurtick

Have you ever felt like you’re going nowhere?  You try but seem like you don’t get the results you really want. Then you look at your competitors and they seem to do something really easy.  Are you comparing yourself to the right business?  If someone has been in business for 50 years, they will have many competitive advantages over a business that hasn’t been around very long, including time and name recognition.  Now, the reverse is true too… the new business also has several advantages including time and name recognition.

How can the two business have the same competitive advantages?

If your business has been in operation for 50 years you will have customers that return year after year just the same as you’ll have those that leave for something new.  So both “time and name recognition” mean different things to each individual customer.  Some may want the familiar, and some will want new.  It’s easy to fall into “your” mindset or “your” insecurity of a per-conceived notion that your competitor has a huge advantage because they’ve been in business longer.  If you had the opportunity to look at their history and struggle timeline, you’d probably find that your business is in a similar situation as they were at the same time in their history.   The keyword is same.

Comparing yourself creates unnecessary stress.  This quote really does a good job of highlighting the “behind-the-scenes” footage with a “highlight reel” – the long standing business now operates on a “highlight reel”.  The funny thing is, they probably only see your “highlight reel”, too.

I’ve said it before, quit competing.  The competitive mindset puts you at a disadvantage, you are constantly chasing someone else.  If you move to a creative mindset it will allow you to focus on your advantages, seek areas where your product/service are needed, and bring success.  Again, great book by Wallace Wattles… The Science of Getting Rich… check it out!

Episode #117 – Three Types of Customer Experiences… Advice from My Squiggle Notes.

“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” M.Althsuler

Sometimes the quote I pick is about me, today is one of those days.  I realized this morning I’m about half way though the time line of a project I started two months ago.  I’m revamping the social media integration at our marina.  I attended two cool conferences this past spring (Social Media Marketing World and Icon) and although the timing was not ideal, I’m the pilot.  And there’s no time like the present for creating change.

I’ve got about 60 days left until Labor Day…

It’s an artificial deadline, because this project will continue to evolve long past that mark. But there has to be a deadline.

So what’s next… because time is flying…

Here’s what’s next. Planning!  (round two)

Two months ago I had a massive planning session with myself.  I reviewed my notes from both conferences and set out on a journey.  I’ve nearly completed everything from that planning session.  Last Sunday it was rainy so I had the perfect opportunity to once again review all of my notes from the two conferences and create one sheet of notes.  One of my crew members saw my paper and startled pointed to the paper and said, “what is that?” – I laughed.  The sheet looked chaotic and had lots of colored arrows, post it notes, stars, and squiggles… but it makes sense to me!

Reviewing notes from a conference is inspiring.  However, I’ve never done it twice and it’s crazy… I found even MORE ideas, this is one that just came to me (from the squiggle sheet).  There are three types of customer experiences you can create:
1) In person
2) Mail
3) Electronic.

Alright, you might not jump out of your chair at that one… but stop and think about it.  IF you switch your mindset to realize that mail is a customer experience, does it create a different value on the letter you send out?  IF mail is an experience, “unboxing” is not a “maybe” but it’s a “must”.  IF digital communication is an experience, then what experience are you creating with that post from yesterday?  Do you wish you could modify it (haha or take it back)???  And clearly our “in person” experience is the most obvious, but also is worth a “level up” action in regards to how you control it.

So there you go, profound inspiration from the squiggle notes… but I’ll let you in on a secret… even I’ll be interested to see where the second half of my project takes me!  The cool part is… I’m in the pilot seat.

PS: if you like my post … give it a “like” (thanks ahead of time)!

Action Step
1- Find your notes from the most recent conference you attended.  Re-Read them.  Keep one piece of paper with you and take notes. Create your own squiggle sheet with ideas!
2- Pick one In-Person, Mail, or Electronic and enhance the experience!  How can you create a vibe that is just YOU or your business using one of those three mediums.  (when you’ve accomplished that… attack the remaining two)
