Episode #267 – ACT is Action or Acting – Which One Describes You?

“Act as if it were impossible to fail.” Dorothea Brande

It’s true!  When you act as if it’s impossible to fail, you’ll succeed. It’s great inspiration and perfect for our Midweek Motivation.

However, I wanted to address the small, three letter work, act.

There are two types of act.  One is Acting and the other is Action.  For today’s inspiration we want the action.  We want to running start, all in, go for it, action.  This is completely different from acting where you assume a different mind set and pretend like it will happen.

I guess you can think about it in terms of the “fake it till you make it” style of success.  I mean if you act as if it were impossible to fail you have 100 percent belief that something will succeed vs. assuming a false mindset where you don’t believe it will actually happen although you take motion toward the goal.

Today…

Take action and believe with every fiber in your body that you will succeed.  Genuinely believe that it is impossible to fail.

Simply pick one thing that you want to have success at and use today’s inspiration as your guide.  Success is waiting!

Episode #232 – Enjoy the Process OR Find a New Goal.

“You can do anything. But not everything.” David Allen

I really wonder about this inspiration.  It’s not that I want to be the nay-sayer… I mean, this is your midweek-motivation, and if I’m going to be discouraging… it certainly shouldn’t be on Wednesday…

BUT

You can do anything.  Really?

I want to be an Olympic Gold Medalist Figure Skater.  OK… no.  Sorry.  That is not going to happen.  I will not be that medal stand.  Why.  Let’s start with my inability to skate well.  Then let’s jump to my hate of cold.  Finally, I’m a tad old… ouch, I could keep going, but I’m kinda depressing myself (hahaha)

Now, let’s jump to the second part of the inspiration.  “You can’t do everything.”

Again… Really?

You can do everything you want — I just like to say, “you can do everything you want, but not all at once”.  There are different phases of your life.  You may have to wait until a time when you have “more time”.  For example, if you have young kids, you may have to wait until they are in school before you take your business to the next level.  Unlike my goal of being a champion skater, you can do “the next level” but maybe not right now… it’s OK to wait.

So let’s go back to that first thing…

Knowing the realistic view point… can you do anything?  Outside of physical, intelligence, or age restrictions, then all you have to do is convince yourself it’s possible!  The convincing may be the challenge.

Outside of the talent and youthful flexibility, I said I can’t be a champion skater because I hate cold.

THAT’S IT!

You must enjoy the process in doing what you “want”, to get where you want!  (Write that down) — if you hate what you are doing, it doesn’t matter what the goal is… you are going to me miserable getting there!

So it’s not even a matter of realistic goals, it’s a matter of enjoyable goals!

Today, as you are setting your daily, weekly, monthly goals — ask yourself if the journey to achieving “it” is something you really want to do… if you do not, then either pick a different goal or path because, in your small business… it’s not about the goal, but about the “day to day” process of getting to the goal!

Enjoy the process!!!!!

Action Steps
1-  Set one goal to complete by the end of the week… how are you going to accomplish the goal.  Write it out “step by step”.  Now… analyze it… will you enjoy this process?  If no… figure out a different way or a different goal.  This is key to getting past the “I hate the middle of the week because I am unmotivated feeling”

Episode #150 – What is Success?

What do successful people do?  There’s a loaded question.  You have to figure out which successful people.  But more important, you need to determine what is successful.  In fact, they might not even consider themselves as, “successful”.  How’s that for silly!  The reason is… “success” is relative.

Unless there is a clock “to beat” or a team “to beat” what is successful?  Success is how you define it.  If you own a business and see your competitor down the street as having twice as many cars in their parking lot as you.  Are they more successful? You need more information.  For example, how big is their parking lot?  If their parking lot is only 1/8th full and regularly it is full… are they more successful?

Another question to ask is how full was their parking lot when they were at the exact stage of their business as you?  If you are comparing your 3 year old business to a 25 year old business are you being fair to yourself?

Therefore, be very careful defining success.  You could drive yourself crazy!

I like today’s inspiration because “action triggers results which triggers success”.  You cannot have success without results and the results come from action.  Your parking lot has nothing to do with a competitor’s parking lot.  It’s irrelevant.  What is important is how full your parking lot is compared to your parking lot the last time you did a similar thing.

For example, if a month ago you created an email about the sale of a special T shirt and your 12 stall parking lot filled up, cool.  Today you created an email about another special T shirt and you have 12 stalls full.  That’s a “fair” comparison.  Well, sort of  – it’s a visual example for this post.  The better thing to measure is sales.  If you did $100 in sales the first time and $110 the next…that’s what you really need to measure.  And, I’m sure someone out there will say it’s not sales but revenue… however, you get my point.

What I’m trying to get you to realize is that the email is the important part of the story.

You took action and created an email that drove sales.   Without the email there would be no result, and there would be no success.  The parking lot has nothing to do with it!  Focus on the email and the T shirts will sell.

Episode #113 – Define Success On Your Terms

I had a crew member tell me that he liked getting a paycheck, he’d just like it IF he didn’t have to work to get it. He lasted about two more weeks and then he just “no show no called”.  Shocking… I know.  He is someone that simply doesn’t understand today’s inspiration.

“The only place success comes before work is in a dictionary.”

Or does he understand it?  OK, that would be giving him waaaay too much credit.  But hear me out.  Depending on your definition of success the receiving a check without working is ideal… I say this with caution because, again, it depends on the source of the check – if it’s coming from mom and dad and you’re living in their basement as an adult… that is not what I mean.  However, if you’ve worked hard and now invest the money and get a check – cool!   Notice I said “worked hard” – the man-boy didn’t want to work.

Let’s go further.

Question: How do you define success?
Answer: Any way you choose.

Success is based on what you want it to be.  You can live your life comparing yourself and your business to others.  When you do this you become “just like them” except you don’t.  You become a less successful version because what they did was original and trailblazing… what you do is copying.  If you truly want to be successful, define and blaze your own trail.  That way when you accomplish your goal, you have all the tools and success necessary to start off on another successful journey.

How do you create success?

You decide what you want.  The best way to do this is to set a goal and create a path to achieve it.  And if it’s a big goal, break it into smaller goals.  AND don’t just have one goal… have several!  It’s OK.  You’re running a small business, you know how to manage multiple projects and tasks.  Why on earth focus on one goal… your personality dictates that you can handle more than one thing at a time!

You don’t have to do multiple goals… but why wouldn’t you?  If it’s because you have more than you can handle and one goal is enough…  that’s perfect.  But if you are only concentrating on one goal because you read it in a book or that’s the advice you’ve always heard… then try multiple goals.  There’s nothing wrong with trying.

Here’s what I mean.  Create a goal to increase sales at the same time you create a goal to increase your personal contact with your current customers at the same time you create a goal to enhance your in-person experience.  Three goals.  If you switch to a goal setting technique it will be far easier to monitor your success.  Yes, it will take work to get used to this technique, but… if getting the bathroom cleaned daily becomes a goal, the goal does become a habit and you can next move onto the next goal of dusting one area of your store every day so the entire store becomes clean… and as you know “clean” will increase sales.

One final reminder… your goals do need to be specific, especially when you have employees helping achieve your goals.  If your goal is “clean bathrooms” this can mean very different things.  Create a check list, because it will help you know when success is attained.  PS: We just did this at our marina… and the bathrooms look fantastic!

Episode #100 – Goals, Revenge, and Chocolate Chip Cookies

“You can’t do that.” “It will never happen.” “Quit wasting your time.” “Just get a real job” Yesterday I wrote about the “downers” and to get them out of you way. When it comes to your circle of influence… you don’t need them.

Here’s the best remedy to shut them up…

Be Successful.
Simple, eh.

Just work hard and achieve massive success.  Show them you’re not messing around.  Go big or go home.

Have I inspired you?  Now to the “achieve” part of that last statement!  You can say all the positive words, kick all the negative people out of your life, but then what do you do?  You have to have a plan… go one step further… your plan needs a goal.  Not a wishy-washy goal.  A real strong firm goal with deadlines and all.

Let’s review the SMART goal setting technique.  More about it can be found on my website BigFishIdeas.com

S= Specific – very clear on what you want
M= Measurable – it needs a number
A= Attainable – has to be realistic
R= Reward – need an incentive
T=Time Bound – gotta have a deadline

Instead of saying: I want more money…. You need to create a goal, “I will increase sales of X product by 10% by the end of the quarter and then I can go to  will celebrate by doing Y” – this is specific (sales of X), measurable (10%), Attainable – it’s realistic, Reward (you decide Y), and Time Bound… End of the quarter.  That’s next month, better get going!

When you use this type of guideline to goal achievement, you focus your attention and have targets to work toward. It’s an effective tool.  Try it out and share you result on my app at SmallBusinessClubApp.com

Go Go GO!

PS: This is Episode #100… WOW!!!!  I get Chocolate Chip Cookies!  🙂  I love goal setting… Please, celebrate with me and eat a Chocolate Chip Cookie, too!  If you are going to celebrate with me… “like” my post!

#73 Your Small Business Experience Merged with Social Media Makes You Unstoppable

Today’s Business Inspiration: “Examine the past, but don’t live there.”

Summary:  Your Small Business Experience Merged With Social Media Makes You Unstoppable – Small business owners are forgetting how much experience they have! You know your message… you can pay someone to “do the technology”!  Install our free app: SmallBusinessClubApp.com

Here’s your small business social media advantage… (and it’s huge)

Experience!!!!!

If you’ve been in business for a while, prior to social media, or if you remember the days of cooking food without a microwave, you have a huge advantage over millennials.  You have experience.  Look at the picture of the computer, if you remember the 5 ½” floppy disc (or disk), you win.  The rotary phone is a little odd since those disappeared long before that computer, however, what today’s business inspiration is saying is: Examine the past but don’t live in it.

What worked for you in the past can work today…  and quite frankly, the marketing techniques that gave you business success before, will work again, they just might look a little different.

You can’t place one ad in an newspaper anymore and be done, however, the general message of the ad is going to work on Craigs List, Facebook, Twitter… you just have different platforms to use, other than that one newspaper.

Let’s see how this works…

Do you remember “long form sales letters”?  They used to arrive in the mail… they we’re talking several pages in length, and they would be sent to hot prospects to give them all the information in carefully crafted language to build interest to take action, but not so much information that their questions were answered…  if you wrote these, dang – you’re going to be happy with this news…

This is the modern day squeeze page!

A squeeze page is where you write compelling information on a one page website.  The website does nothing except sit with your “long form sales letter” and it’s only job is to capture the email address of the person visiting.  There will be no header and no links, just the area for the prospect to enter their email address to get more information about your product… well several areas along the way to submit their email address.  But you get the point.

Always visit the marketing techniques you used in the past because marketing is simply communicating your message. Your message will never stop being delivered, it may just take a different path to get to your prospect. One hint: start by positioning yourself as a subject matter expert.

And remember you can always pay someone to “do the technology”.

PS:  Did this post make you think or go “hey” that’s something I can do … if yes… “Like” it! (thanks)

Action Step
1- Make a list of 5 super marketing activities you’ve ever done… your all time best 5 things.
2- Why did they work?  Really think of the reasons they worked. Who was the audience? How did they get your ad? Now think… where have you seen this technique used today? was it on Facebook, email marketing… how did your great success from 15 years go get morphed into today’s social media marketing… now go do it yourself!
