Start a new profit center… and start it small.

Earlier this year I noticed this place card on the table at the restaurant and just had to share it.  In a area where you would expect to find the “special of the day” or a list of drinks you have an advertisement for swag!

This is a restaurant that’s enhanced it’s revenue with a new and unrelated profit center.  They sell food… and T Shirts.

AND they tell you about it during the time you’re most captivated.  There aren’t many times you actually read anything put in front of you other than waiting in line for a bathroom… right?!

So, there are TWO take-aways from this week’s “Try This” — one, add a new profit center, and two, promote things in the areas of your business where you have a captive audience.

Episode #386 – The Interactive Stop.

Add an Ipad or tablet to your waiting area!   And by waiting area, I mean any area your customer has spare time.  This could be outside a restroom area, or near a cash register… or even add a tablet in an area you need a sales person but simply don’t have a human.

We did this last summer in our retail store!  We used this technology to help us with a “consistency of message”  opportunity.  We needed to make sure specific information about our rental boats was given to our customers.  Well, via the internet we created a 45 second YouTube video that we are able to access by a wireless connection.

We live in an exciting time with all of the technologies at hand!  I mean, sure sometimes it frustrates us… but when a small business can by a simple tablet for $35.00… yes… we bought it for $35.00 and it can be linked to the wireless connection we already pay for… and we use a video that we created with an iphone… I mean think of how many technologies make it “easy” to create a video that you can show a customer on demand.

NOW ask yourself, why aren’t you utilizing this AMAZING opportunity?!?!?

Episode #349 – A New Twist on Branding!

Saturday Try This!

How can you surprise your customers? There are a thousand answers for your one business… but when I was at the ESPN restaurant at Disney… my chicken sandwich became that “wow moment” because it was branded!

How cool is this?!?!

It was not a “buffalo” themed sandwich… the restaurant is not western themed restaurant… and yet, my sandwich had the ESPN brand right on it! I wasn’t expecting it to be branded.  If the sandwich had a non-branded bun I would not have missed it — BUT, by taking that little extra effort, it made my sandwich special!

What happens with a special sandwich? It causes a conversation… I mean look!  You were not at my lunch table… yet you’re experiencing it!  You get to see this very cool sandwich and you can comment on it!

One brand… turns into one photo… turns into a blog post… turns into a “try this” idea… that causes countless other people to think of how they can adapt this type of “WOW moment” at their business… all from one chef deciding to brand a bun on a sandwich.  That’s pretty “impactful”!

Episode #331 – The Fun is in the Details!

Your business is an experience.  Whether you believe this or not… YOUR BUSINESS IS AN EXPERIENCE!

Here’s why this is true…

When you visit someone’s home is it an experience?  How about when you visit your friend’s office?  Better yet… tell me all about the feeling you get visiting the dentist’s office… yeah, the dentist office!  From the moment you wake up, then get in your car, to walking into the office… then of course the sound of the music, the feel of the magazines on the waiting table, the “NEXT” that summons you to the door that opens to the hallway you walk down, until you see the chair.  The creek of the vinyl as you sit, the feel of the bib as the chain clasps behind your neck, and finally the sound of the drill.

OH yes!  The experience is real!

Notice how I left out the spit sink?  haha

Here’s the deal.  Your business creates an experience.  So… what experience do you create?  What is your music, scent, ambiance?  You must be aware of all these things in the “real world” because as you build your online world it must match what your customer experiences in person.

I loved this chalkboard that announced specials for the hotel beach experience they offered.  They used a boogie board that doubled as a chalkboard… so even though you were in the hallway when you saw it, it automatically evoked an experience!  It’s very simple and extremely effective.  Look for these little details to build your businesses experience.

Episode #319 – Old School AND New School Marketing at the SAME TIME.

Fantastic Idea Alert!

You need to do this.  Oh my… and it’s so simple.  Print up your good reviews and post them on a bulletin board.   I saw this at the RV show.  If you’ve never been to an RV show, you’ve got to go!  There are some pretty amazing vehicles out there.  AND they have mini-donuts!  YUMMMMM.

Seriously, how easy is this idea!  The internet is still mysterious.  I mean… right now, you’re reading this blog on the internet.  And yet, the digital bells and whistles are floating somewhere around you.  As soon as you’re connected to a computer or smart phone, bing, you can see it.

But what about people that stop by your store?  Can they see your reviews?  Probably not… but when they’re standing at your cash register or waiting for the restroom, they have time to read!  Print up your reviews (the good ones… haha) and pin them to a cork board and let people read them!

You have a captive audience and nice words about you… you may even receive a few more reviews because of making this “in person” “real world” display!

Episode #283 – Cuddle Up With Pickles.

It’s Saturday, time to get real!  It’s when we explore a great idea at a real world business and implement it at your business.

This idea is from Milio’s subway shop.  Now… this is when you start to wonder, um…. I sell wedding gowns, what can I learn from a sandwich place?

You can learn a lot… if you open your mind.

The idea I’m sharing is the “National Day Of” celebration.   Everyday there are at least three topics… some days there are 7 or 8, there are weekly celebrations and monthly celebrations.  What I recommend is looking at the calendar and seeing what relates to your business and using it as a conversation starter!

I don’t like it when business just re-post the topic of the day – that’s lazy.  I like it when they get creative.  So look at the sub shop – they are not celebrating sandwiches or picnics… they’re celebrating pickles!  AND they created a pickle-on-a-stick!  How cool is that – they made a sign for their counter and it’s sold as an impulse/add-on item!
