Episode #328 – No Excuses, Achieve Your Goal.

“Success happens when your dreams get bigger than your excuses”

What’s your fall back excuse?  Is it the reason you’re late, out of shape, or broke?  There’s got to be one.  We all have them.

I hate excuses… I mean, I’m guilty of using them… but I still hate them.

The way I look at it is that… making an excuse just isn’t productive.  The time it takes to tell yourself an excuse you could accept and move forward. You might not solve the problem right then and there, but you don’t hold yourself back and stay in the problem.

The moment you choose to NOT make an excuse you actually start to move forward.  Success is a funny thing.  It happens.  You have a great deal of control over how it happens.  The best way to achieve this success is by goal setting.

I have an entire part of my website devoted to goal setting you can find it here.

Now… as I’ve always said, I don’t like the mindset of goal setting, I prefer the mindset of goal achievement.  Much like an excuse prevents success.  Goal setting can prevent goal achievement because the success rests in the act of setting not in the act of achieving.

Therefore, get a goal, set out to achieve it… and drop the excuses.

Have an awesome Wednesday!

Episode #300 – How Do I Make Money Online?

WOW! 300 Episodes… THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple” -Dr. Seuss

The answer is: email

The question is: How do I make money online?

Again the answer is simple, but that does not mean the answer is easy. You have quite a bit of work ahead of you. However, knowing the answer ahead of time does show you the path.

Our “Big Money Small Change” topic revolves around the process of activating the Infinity Marketing Machine. This happens with regular intervals of communication with your customers.

Let’s get back to the fundamentals of making this work!

Start by collecting emails. I know it sounds obvious, but is it? So many small business owners have become distracted with Facebook ads that they forget this basic building block.

Before you even think about running another ad, figure out how you are going to capture the name of someone visiting your site. It will involve a field -but it’s a titch more than that… you need to entice your customer to share their personal information with you! Realize, that you are gaining a privilege by them to send them information.

Don’t believe me?

Well… send me your email address!

HA! We’ve been trained not to just give a way our email addresses… that’s why the “join our newsletter” field has slim to no chance of ever collecting an email address.

The better way to collect an email address is to give away something… a fact sheet, a small guide/book, a video with special information. There are lots of items of value you can share with people.

So there’s your start.  Begin today – create the basic foundation of you Infinity Marketing Machine by starting to collect emails!

Episode #139 – Develop Policies that Work for Your Business, Don’t Worry About What “They’re” Doing…

There is that saying that the “grass is always greener… “ blah blah.  I like today’s inspiration better.  “Forget the grass on the other side and water your own.”

If you get into a situation where you check your competitors pricing, ads, policies, regularly you will lose.  You will constantly play catch up and you will end up with a bad version of their business.  You need to run your business as your entity.  You need to develop pricing that works for your expenses.  You need to develop policies that work for your goals.

I had a customer call me and he was annoyed with our cancellation policy and change fee on the pontoon rentals.  So he asked me, do our competitors do these things… my answer was, “I have no idea”

It slightly annoyed him because his real question had more to do with his innuendo or shall I say, passive aggressive way of telling me he was thinking of going to a competitor.

But honestly, our policies are not for everyone.  That is why there is competition.  I worry about what works for us.  Our summer is essentially 15 weeks.  We need to maximize that time frame.  As such, we have policies that reduce the possibility of cancellations and date changes… the reason?  Because the closer to the date we come, the less likely the boat will rent, therefore we want people who are committed to their cruise date. A boat that sits at the dock does not make money.

It’s good to know what your competition is doing, but don’t get hung up on it.  Forge your own path based on the goals you set for your business.  You know what is best.

Episode #94 – Go Big! Become a Subject Matter Expert to Help Your Small Business!

Just like you create your products and services you need to create yourself.   Using today’s inspiration as your guide, you need to make waves and if you’re going to make waves, they might as well be big that way you can ride to success.

Creating yourself online can seem overwhelming.  But switch your thinking to it’s the way to control your message online.  A quick exercise is to Google your name.  What did you find?  Do you like the information?  Now imagine if you can put out information about yourself.

It’s funny, we spend so much time branding our business and learning skills and techniques to help spread the message about products and services, then at the same time we forget to do this for “me”.  It does take extra effort, and sometimes it feels a little self-serving.  Well, it kind of is… except that it is also important in your role as a business owner.  Prospective customers want to know you.  THEY will Google your name.  It’s time to control that message.

I recommend positioning yourself as a subject matter expert.  This needs to be in an area you are passionate about.  This may or may not be in the same area as your business.  Let me explain.  If your business is a gift store, but your volunteer hours are spent with the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts because you yourself were a scout.  This may be the area of your subject matter expertise.  For me, I work in the Marina Industry but my subject matter expertise is in baton twirling.  Crazy?  Yes.  But I competed for 17 years and continue involvement as a judge/coach and through social media with the creation of an app for baton twirlers.  It may have nothing to do with boating, but my customers still have an opportunity to know me, and I control the message.

The way to become a subject matter expert is to find a passion you enjoy and begin to message about it. This message may occur though a blog, vlog, or podcast.  This message combine with honors, awards, research, and education will allow you to control “your corner of the web”.  This messaging again, will build your credibility as a “real person” online and help in your branding for your business.  Don’t neglect the power of Linked-In for small businesses.  Here’s my story… I work for our family business and thought Linked-In was just for job seekers or corporate people.  Then one day, I noticed that soon after potential customers would visit our marina they would look me up on Linked-In.  That’s when I strengthened my profile and my dad had a profile created.  Use these tools.

Make sure to visit my site and download the booklet on becoming a subject matter expert.

Episode #92 – You Say You’re Busy… Why? Triage Your Business Problems by Setting a Goal.

What is making you so busy?  Try this.  Just stop everything.  Right now…Just stop.  Sometime you’ve got to triage.  You know triage… the process of looking at the problems you face and deciding which of three categories they get grouped in;

1) problems that are likely to succeed without your intervention
2) problems likely to fail (or have no big difference) with your intervention
3) problems that your intervention will positively impact the outcome

Now… if you assess your business this way by using triage, does it look any different?  Possibly… and I say possibly because it depends on your goals.

The reason you feel so frickin busy is because your “tasks” and “goals” are out of whack.

So you’ve got to… stop.  Just stop.  What do you really want?  This business that is making you so “busy”… what the frick are you doing?  Do you want fame or fortune?    That’s the only two options.

“Fame” makes you known.  “Fortune” makes you money.

Sure, fortune can bring fame and conversely fame can bring you fortune.  But only focus on one!

Create your business journey to achieve just this one outcome. With this one outcome in mind take another look at your “triage” problems.  How many of the problems that you put in category #3, the “intervention positively impacts outcome” are aligned with your fame/fortune goal?  If I had to guess, it’s quite a few.

If you really want to scare yourself, bundle all of your personal/business problems on one piece of paper.  But before you triage, decide if your ultimate life goal is fame or fortune.  Now triage.

I’m not here to give a “work/life” balance speech, because quite frankly, it doesn’t exist.  There is no “one moment” in life when you’ll have it all.  Something always takes precedence.  There will be times that your business is awesome, but your personal life needs attention, times your overweight but you have money, times you have free time but no money.  I know you’re laughing… but it’s true.  You can have it all, the secret is… the “all” just happens at different phases of your life.

Give my fame/fortune/triage approach a try… and mix in a little Oprah as if she’s sitting next to you asking the question, “What are you busy at?”

PS: if you love my post … give it a “like”!

1- Decide if you want to focus on “fame” or “fortune”
2- Write down all the things making you “busy” today
