Content is typically thought of as the words you speak or write… but then again we have photos so content doesn’t have to contain words.

So does content tell a story?  It can, but you can also create content that causes a vote… I mean, what else is a survey!

Your content is completely subjective and it’s about connection.  It could be through music or video.  There are lots of ways to create the connection you desire.

So what about your packaging.  Does packaging qualify as content.

Let me answer that with a question, have you ever seen an “unboxing”?

OH my we’ve actually created a word to describe the act of opening a package.

YIKES!

If there’s a word, you better pay attention to it.  So YES packaging is content, and it can create content.

The big difference you have over is this… you can create a personal connection via your packaging. Your vibe will translate through your thank you note, stickers, stuffing.

Amazon has that smile on the outside of the box, but typically nothing vibe worthy on the inside.

Therefore…this is an area you can knock your customers socks off!  I mean… here’s the deal… Amazon is affecting your pricing, you might as well capitalize on your vibe.  It will help with your return customers… I mean Infinity Customers!

Include a treat, a small momento, it could be a piece of candy, a rubber duck, a key chain.  It should not be expensive, it does not need to be a logo based item, but it must evoke your vibe.

Could you imagine if you sold movie memorabilia and inside the shipping box you included a bag of microwave popcorn with your thank you note?  That would be so cool!

I don’t have an online store associated with our marina.  I had one around 2006…  but if it were open right now, I’d include a thank you note and a smile face beach ball.  Why?  Our city has a smile face on the water tower and you can see the smile face on your way to our marina via the water!  AND it’s something you can use on the boat.

The smile face beach ball evokes emotion, becomes a vibe, and causes people to talk… it becomes your “no words needed” content.  If you include a hashtag sign in the box you’ll also receive social interaction.  Again, more content!  Gosh, this makes me want to open an online store for the boat yard!

Go the extra mile and think about what you can do as you expand your view of content!

Thursday: Infinity Customer

It’s funny… Sometimes I forget to go back to basics when I talk to a newbie.  I had a woman that was looking for a way to market her Jewelry better.

So… I looked at her website and learned about her passion for volunteerism.  I suggested to build a PDF around previous volunteer activities she had participated in… things she actively did, places she’s gone…

Then she said, “Yeah, but would someone really be interested in that?”

That’s when I went back to the basics.  YES!  Someone you are attracting would have the same passion you would in volunteerism.  You want this person to buy from you and more important you want to serve this person.  This is your ideal “one and done” to “Infinity Customer” scenario.

Then I explained… I’m not your ideal customer.  haha

So today, I opened my email and had this message…

I’m like 2020?  What the heck… it’s February!  Why on earth would I want a 2020 calendar?

Guess What?  I’m not their ideal client!  BUT… it’s worth sending out the email because after seeing it I thought… well, I am planning to go to a conference in January, and one in March…and then I thought about putting my birthday in it!  All sorts of things that would make me want this product that at first glance I had no idea I wanted.

This is what is useful about email.  If you tell a story you can help your customer visualize how it will benefit them AND you do this from the perspective of Serving/Helping you will earn their trust and loyalty.

Don’t get stuck in the trap of putting your preconceived buying habits as the same as your customers.  Simply be the guide of helpfulness and move them down your path of products.  It’s a mind shift, but a profitable one!

Focus on winning.  The basketball team is on the floor playing ball and they are focused on winning… do they win?

Probably not.

WHAT!?!!?!??

If you focus on winning you rarely win. I mean, what does winning mean?  The basketball team focuses on seeing the clock winding down, 3…2…1 we won!

NO!

The basketball focuses on team work.  They focus on the plays they practiced. They focus on preparation, like if their shoes are tied. They focus on the process.

If you want to win at tribe building, you must focus on my process.

Here’s my process.

Turn customers from “one and done” into “Infinity Customers” these are people that Know, Like, and Trust you.  You have earned this trust via the 5 C’s of Tribeology: Credibility, Content, Consistency, Customers, Cash.    When you have transformed the customers into this wonderful, magnificent tribe you will then be able to focus on offering products to them instead of searching for people to buy your products!

That’s it.

That’s the process.

Each day on this blog I focus on a different “C”.  Today is “Content and Consistency” – therefore, today I’m sharing a tip.  The tip is you yourself need to focus on “the process” to build your tribe.

If your focus is on “making money” it is the same as the basketball team “winning”.  Instead, focus on the process.

When you focus on the process, the money will follow.

Here’s a quick tip to try… Surprise your customers!

The other day I opened my mail and got this neat packet.

It includes a nice booklet about happenings at Disney World, including my benefits as a member. But even neater is the cling.

The book is for me to go to their business and spend money… but the cling is also for me to show off that I’m a member and recruit other members.

So this bundle pack makes me feel special, encourages me to spend money, and encourages me to recruit new members. win. win. win.

I didn’t request the pack, I didn’t expect it, it just arrived.  It made me think good thoughts!

This is something that is easy to do with your customers.  Send them a note to just let them know you appreciate them!  Include a gift, even if it’s a BIG coupon code… something very special.  It doesn’t have to cost a lot to be effective.

Try this.

There is one thing that has always surprised me… that’s when people are excited to have a “snow day”. Sure it’s fun to have time off.

But I’m speaking of “snow days” from school. OR you’re excited when the teacher lets you out early.

This baffles me.

You spend money for a class and then are thrilled when you don’t have to go! What kind of mindset is that? Its like paying for a dinner and being thrilled when they don’t bring dessert that you paid for… or you ordered a large popcorn and got a small.

You paid for it, you should be excited to get the full thing.

OK, enough of my rant, but I saw this post and thought to myself…

FINALLY SOMEONE THAT UNDERSTANDS IT.

 

Start looking at snow days as your time to get ahead! It’s like a catch up day or even a day you can work on the creative things you’ve been putting off. But it’s a great time, not to lay around and binge on Netflix… but you can make more money!

Look at the post. They are closed YET they thought ahead and said, let’s use this snow (lemon) and make lemonade snow (not yellow snow, that’s gross… but I knew you were thinking it!) haha

Alright, but look at the possibilities.

Many other people are taking their snow day to hang out, stuck with down time, and you know down time is occupied by surfing time… so why not go a step further and have your snow-day file! Come up with a GOOD promotion, like a BIG discount on crap you want to get rid of and clearance it out… shoot out an email to your list, put the post up, take out an ad and run a flash sale.

If it’s snowing where you are but your customer is in the sun… it’s OK. Maybe they’ll feel bad for you.

PS: I’ve got a whole weekend of potential snow days so I’ll try this and let you know what happens!

So we’re having a little blizzard here today in Minnesota… that really has nothing to do with this blog except I’m very tired of snow (and it’s only February) – and yet the snow keeps coming. We were very close to breaking the all time snowiest February, so as long as you’re that close you might as well beat the record, right?

Record broke. Now I’m over it.

However, I’ve had two great posts today with nice engagement because of the snow. I’ve also got a little Summer Fever going on with the weather – so weather can be a great draw for your business. But, you need to plan ahead. I’ve already got the following on Facebook and on my email so it’s easy for me to do a quick interruption to their day to just say “hi” and lead the group in a joint complaint about the weather.

That’s what I want you to be able to do to. When you plan ahead and build a list of customers that know, like, and trust you… you’ll be able to complain about the weather with them! Haha

Here’s my real point.

When you have a business in the real world and you customers stop by you are able to have a dialog. With them, IN PERSON. They walk in your door, shake off the snow, and you can comment on the weather.

When you’re online, you need to take a proactive step and send out a “one sided” thought about the weather. Think of it like they did actually just step in your store and you’re commenting… and ice breaker so to speak.

This is how you reward customers for visiting you online.

It seems funny that a “complaint” about the weather is a reward and yet… there it is. When we complain about the weather it gives us something to bond about.

Granted, one of my posts was for a nationwide following, and it still worked. Why? Because there are active TV news reports about the Snowmageddon we are having here in Minnesota. This can actually be MORE impactful because someone sitting in Florida will show their co-worker the photo, or even share with their friends because they have a “local” connection.

It’s all about making connections.

You can and must make connections with your online visitors. If you have a website, give them an area to come back to again and again… this is a blog. A place of new information.

If you ship merchandise, reward them with a note or small gift. Do something to wow them. This is how you reward!

Rewarding can be bad weather, new information, or even a gift. But never silence. So just because there are no door bells alerting you to a visitor doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for reward marketing.

It actually will separate you from the rest of your competition and is one of the best ways to build your infinity customer.

Show them love!
