The crazy thing is, right now, you are presented with an opportunity.  Granted, it’s probably one you did not anticipate, expect, and a month ago you did not want… but here it is, so what do you do?

You’ve got a choice, complain and be frozen… or fight and be numb.

So pick, complain or fight… and fight meaning attack the problem.  And frozen or numb… frozen meaning you can’t take action.

I like this pairing up of alternatives because leaders will be developed in this time.  You are the leader of your business, but many business are shut down leaving little opportunity to make money.

Well, one amazing example is from the Disney Food Blog I follow on YouTube.  I’m not a foodie, and really their channel has grown to be about exciting things to do and see at Disney World.

WOAH.

Disney World… that place that’s closed right now.  I know this because that ONE time of year I can go on vacation, the park closed.  What are the odds?  I mean honestly, I booked my trip in October… rarely do I every plan more than 3 weeks in advance, I planned 6 months in advance… and BOOM. 

But they have an entire YouTube Channel on Disney with their mission to put a couple videos out a week… that is completely turning your business upside down.  The thing you focus on is closed.

Hummmmmmmmm

You know what they’re doing… things that are open during the shut down… things that you need to know about refunds… things that are happening to the cast members… how to still get your Disney entertainment at home… they are leading.

Leading is finding the thing you CAN do.  Restaurants have closed but now focus on take out.  Tonight I sat in a drive through line of 12 cars, prior to the shutdown, I never saw more than two in the drive through…  they are leading.

Your doors are shut, but you can learn a skill to sell on line.  I noticed today that our traffic increased.  Finally.  It’s been a month, but there is FINALLY interest in our services. But you know what else I did today.  I spent 6 hours learning a new skill on Facebook Ads.

If I hear one more thing about people being bored at home when you could spend the time learning SOMETHING… or selling SOMETHING.  You have an entire house full of clutter… sell it.  Go on Ebay or Etsy… This is your chance!

Work out… eat better… so many options!  Stop reading social media posts (except this blog – haha)

Have you ever been so overwhelmed and thought, “if only I had time to learn, do, or clean _____?” — Over and Over!  But people are online, complaining about something the neighbors are doing.

Do like the Disney Blog… their main focus of their blog CLOSED but they are still producing content. 

Find the thing you’ve wanted to learn and go to Udemy… they’ll have a class.  My mom’s next class is a beginner course to Ipad.  Then she can go shopping and I can pick up at the store for her. 

Leading in these times is what your customers need most.  Communicate with them.  Share your thoughts.  Just let them know what you’re doing! 

But most important make a choice to use your time wisely.

When was the last time you stopped and thought about the future?

If I had to guess… it was either at the end of February OR it’s everyday – but the two visions have radically changed.

If February it was more of a vision of hope, and now it’s a vision of survival.  But guess what… your vision is something you control and with that you affect other people.

When you go small you will get small.  It sounds obvious, but what are you doing today for your business?  Are you going small?  Have you quit talking…

It’s time to start talking.  But, before you do, take a moment to plan big.  It’s not easy… especially when you are so confused by what is going on in the world around you.  However, planning is something important.  Right now you have the opportunity to get ahead of on your content planning and determine the objective for a couple weeks or even months in advance.

But this all starts with clarity.  When you have clarity in your goal it’s much easier to lead your tribe.

When you transform from relying on selling products to customers and instead create a tribe and offer them products they want to buy… it’s a BIG change. 

Now is  the perfect time to do this. 

Start with the plan. Plan that Infinity Marketing Machine and get your messaging on course. It’s not difficult to set up the framework.  The difficult part is consistently providing the content.  That’s when I recommend viewing the content as sharing information that your customers need.  When you do this, the process of content becomes much ore important and thus, easier to prioritize in your day.

Task for today:  Create your content guide for April and May… Then attack the content and start writing some useful content for your tribe!

Have you ever bought anything big?  I remember the last car I purchased… that’s a big purchase.

I bought it and from that moment I said “yes” it was like getting comforted from the sale to the close.

There was the lounge with free soda. The really cool finance room with the desktop that was actually a giant screen computer.  OK it was cool.

Walking out to see my car.  DANG I love new car smell… even in a pre owned car.

And the handshake, presentation of the keys, and wave good bye.

Then what?

What happens next?

HOW do you help your customers make the transition from the wave goodbye to the next thing?

Do you have a next thing?  Most people don’t… but imagine what would happen if you checked in with your customers just to see how they are doing… or every month you sent an email or postcard…

After all, these are people that are familiar with you and like you… so they will buy from you again. 

It’s never too late to rekindle that relationship… as you are trying to drum up business, start with the relationship.  Go through your old records, and talk with someone… offer a “come back” special… What will it cost?  The price of your time, the cost of the discount… but then again what will you gain… new business?

YEP!

Get out there and make an old sale!

As for my car… my sales person sends an email once a month…

I think this quote is the understatement of the year.

Traditionally when we have thought about shifting customer needs we have concerned ourselves with trends or seasons…right?

There are people that remember the mortgage crisis or even the attacks of September 11… well, those are the shifting customer needs we are discussing right now.

In a seasonal trend, you take mittens off the shelf and replace with swim suits. It’s pretty manageable.  You will understand that the calendar dictates your next move…

But now… right now, what the heck are you suppose to do?

A month ago we were just past Valentines Day and heading toward St. Patrick’s Day… change your color scheme from red to green.  Your customer need shifted from heart candy to green beer… well, you get my point.

But shifting from February 25 economy roaring to March 25 shelter in place… all of this without a mass tragedy one time rip the band aid off occurrence… it’s surreal, right?

So what do your customers need?

Your customers need stability.  They are living in an insecure world.  You feel it… and you experience it.

But how do you give that stability… well, look at your core business and what do you actually sell?  Do you dance lessons which are a way to foster the growth and confidence of the child? You can still provide that.  You may be giving video lessons… but how can you help the parent? Can you provide an article and extra assignment for the parent to do a practice check list?

Think of your basic product – not what you sell but WHY you sell.  WHY does someone actually buy your product or service.

Focus on that WHY and provide more love and attention in this area.  This is how you bond with your Infinity Customers and keep them around until we all achieve certainty

How’s it going?  If you’re like anyone else I’ve talked to today it’s almost minute by minute.

The virus situation has left everyone without a direction.

Well, not everyone.  There are plenty of people that are ready to roll in this type of crisis.

I’m not talking about the people hoarding products.  I’m talking about the people who have been there before…

And by “been there before” I’m referring to a crisis.

It seems like there are two camps. Those that have given up or bought into the bad, and those that are fighting.  I think it has to do more with the stages of grief.  But let’s just say in a time when things are out of your control you need to find something to control.

That’s when the fight in you needs to take over.

One great quote, that you’ve probably hear before, is “the money is in the list” – that means your list of contacts provide you money.

What if you had a list, right now, that you could email and share a special product you made with them.  Something they desire and want to buy…

That is what you are working for… and if you don’t have a list, start!

Take this opportunity to attract people to your business.  Just because you are “closed” or because the phone has stopped ringing… it doesn’t mean that people have stopped buying.

They are just as lost as you and looking for a leader.

Start attracting them by sharing information they desire.  When they get this information you build trust.  I sent an email earlier today to our core customers and it’s sitting at about a 61% open rate… it will grow. 

I’m working on a couple of big projects to help bond this group and build loyalty.  It’s not designed to sell them more, it’s designed to keep them.

If you’re not talking to your customers… someone else will.

Get out there and decide to build the bond.  This will get better, don’t wait until it does, start the chatting now.

Even if it’s just 4 people on your list, just talk to them.  This is a long term plan but it’s a great way to build an asset at your business.

I visited the grocery store on March 14 and saw this!

This made me happy.

Remember Pi is the mathematical number 3.14 and has been adopted as March 14.

The virus is awful.  Schools closed, restaurants closed, businesses closed. 

There are lots of memes on the internet… OK, my favorite is the one that says, “in about 3 weeks we’ll find out what everyone’s natural hair color is”  Yep, my roots are already showing, ugh.

But here’s the deal.

After all the “fun” of being stuck in your home turns to crazy walls closing in on you… what can you do as a business to help serve your customers?

Look at this example…

What a super helpful post!  It’s great for the company to provide easy goodwill.  They sped up the film to demonstrate the exercises and added subtitles.  What a great idea.

How can you do something like this?

At our marina we have ice on our lake… but what we are doing is promoting businesses that are part of our community by sharing information with our tribe such as which are still open for take-out. 

There is something you can do to help your community.  Whether this is your own customers or by sharing your audience.

Serve when you can!

Have you ever driven with your eyes closed?  Oh gosh I hope not!  But there are times you just drive… and end up somewhere not even remembering any part of your journey, right?!?

Totally!

But, this is a really bad idea, especially with marketing!  Yet, I think this is kind of a common practice.

We often find ourselves going on autopilot.  We throw a sale against the wall and hope it sells.  After the event we count the cash and go on with our day.

It’s time to get strategic with your plans.  And there’s no time like the presence.

One simple piece of advice, people are still buying.  If you quit advertising no one knows you exist.  

Same happens in reverse… if all of your competition quits advertising, and you increase your advertising you’ll be the only one around and top of mind.

Use your metrics of how much makes sense based on sales achieved, but don’t stop.

Do not stop getting your message out there…. I know we’re in a big crisis.  But keep going. 

This is the perfect opportunity to have a strong Infinity Marketing Machine… crank it up!  Keeping top of mind is key to success once the crisis passes.

What if you don’t have an Infinity Marketing Machine or email list, no time like the present to start!  Right now, collect emails!

So what should you do today?

1- collect emails -even if this means putting a note on the counter to “sign up for our list”

2- create a message that tells your story about the situation…what are you doing, what have you done, keep it up beat and happy.  But, don’t sell.  it’s not time yet.

There you go, two things to do that you can start measuring for watching your success grow.  You can watch the number you add to your list and soon compare to a week ago, a month ago, a year ago… 

Next is your email you create.  Your email service provider will give you numbers on open rates and click through rates…

I guess that’s three things you can measure!

Indecision.  That’s a problem most people have.  I mean, even in government there’s a term called “pocket veto” instead of taking action on a bill, the bill is put in your pocket and waited until time runs out.

And that’s indecision… you just let time pass.

But then there’s times like right now.

Three weeks ago we felt like a bowling ball tossed right down the center of the alley… we were aiming center and spinning and moving forward. 

NOW?

Now we are still on the alley but there are no more pins and we are just goal less.  We do not know what the deadline is, what the journey is, and what the outcome is… we hear lots and lots of noise that pulls us toward one gutter then the next and yet we spin not making progress.

This is not the time to make a big decision.

Sometimes people think, I will move, invest, quit, sleep.  This might be a good time to assess and then decide.

I don’t mean become stagnate.  But just wait. 

The pins will come back in the alley and you will find your target soon.

These are strange times, thank goodness they are just temporary.

Have you ever said something to a customer and wondered, “How the heck did they hear that?” –

This goes for both reading and hearing.

One quick funny… well I guess it’s not so funny, but looking back it is…

I had a customer that asked about a boat we had for sale… I shared information about the boat and said, it’s outside come see it.  Well… he took my statement as uncaring like… “quit bothering me it’s outside go find out for yourself” instead my my intent which was “I really want you to come see it so you know how amazing it is…” Ugh.  That was an awkward moment.

Totally preventable, too. 

Now on to today.

Learning from that experience I was talking with a co-worker about how to say we don’t give discounts without sounding snotty.

For example, it’s ok if you leave early, we have customers that do it, but there is no economic advantage. 

That sounds better than…

You won’t get a discount OR it’s the same price.

Your customers impression of your business is HOW you frame your message.  I’ve done it on this blog more than once…

When I type fast I often forget my subjects.  I write from one sentence to the next and do not acknowledge the subject and instead let the reader imply the subject from the previous topic.

That’s not a great style.

Like my “the boat is outside, come and look” comment… if you do not slow down and take the extra time to consider your customer, you can get a serious misunderstanding!

Your goal is to increase sales. The best way to do this is to give that customer that’s in front of you, or reading your post, your 100% attention.

What they hear is super duper important and while you don’t have control over that, you do have control over what you are saying and HOW you are saying it.
