How do you say, “thank you”?  OR How have you received a Thank You?

These are two very important questions.  Especially when it comes to credibility!

One of the 5C’s is credibility — it’s the ability to show social proof or endorsement from an outside source.  And this could be from education – both formal, and seminar, it can also come from certifications, reviews, and even the thumbs up you receive from a post you create.

But what about from a Thank You?

When you host an event, do you send a thank you?  Or even better if you receive a Thank You, have you ever thought of framing the letter?

The most common example of this is, and I just saw it last week in the hospital, is a corkboard with thank you notes pinned to it.

What that does is shows how many people appreciate your service enough to send the thanks… it also shows people USING your service that they too can have their thank you not pinned with the rest!

But what about  a certificate?

In the summer we host an event called National Marina Day and we have volunteers from the local law enforcement and civic groups — as a thank you, it could be a great idea to create a certificate and send it framed — anything framed goes on a wall…

Here’s a great example.  And it’s a VERY special Thank You.

My husband worked at the World Boy Scout Jambouree last Summer.  And recently received this framed art work of the limited edition patch to recognize the event as workers.

When you hang this in your office you automatically build credibility because people will ask about it or read the plate at the bottom.   If your customers are interested in the same type of volunteer or civic group, in this case, The Boy Scouts, then you have built an immediate bond… great for tribe building!

It’s a wonderful example of how to thank people AND how to use a thanks as credibility!

If you believe you can. You will.

If you believe you can’t. You won’t.

Now… how about your customers?  How do they know you will or won’t?  I mean the most important thing to your customers is NOT you… it’s them.

It’s the old “what’s in it for me” WIIFM — this means you must give them what they want!

So we’ve reached the obvious part of the blog.

Now the less obvious, how to get them to realize you have what they want… hummmmmmmmm

One hint, today is Subject Matter Expert day.  As such, the way to get them to realize you have what they want is to show them though your expertise.

Expertise, especially by another party, is a confidence builder.

Think about it.

When you make buying decisions doesn’t it help that the product is “product of the year” or that “it won best in show” or whatever.  It’s a winner.

To get to get them to REALIZE you have what they want… is best when you’re endorsed by a third party through awards!

People understand winners.

I mean, if you’re voted “best pancakes in town” or “5 star certified” – it means something, only my husband wonders how many other pancake emporiums were in the competition or if on a 5 star scale there happened to be a possible 15 stars… but that’s a topic for another day. 🙂

For now… attract your customers by winning awards.

TribeologyBlog.com – Episode 774 – You’re Only Three and a Half Miles Away from Social Proof

Today – are you going to risk it… or be safe?   You have thousands of decisions to make today, most will be made without much thought.

Think about it – already today you’ve made decisions on what to wear and eat… but were they safe or risky decisions.

What to eat?  Honestly, is this risky?  YES… sometimes there is drama involved in it.  A decision so seemingly easy can be filled with mystery.  You decide to grab a meal, but you don’t like it, but you’re out of money… how will you know if you like it?

It’s probably impossible to know if you will enjoy eating something, after all, you need to consume the product to determine if you like it… so if you don’t like it, it’s too late!

So what the heck do you do?

You rely on Social Proof.  If someone else out there has eaten at the restaurant you want to try… or even the actual dish that you’re debating ordering… someone else that has had the experience can really help determine if it’s for you, too!

Here’s a fun rendition of my husband’s restaurant selection on a recent layover in North Carolina… and yes, he always puts this much effort into restaurants.  Yeah, give me a PB&J and I’m set… for him… this decision is a big BIG deal.

What is the value of social proof? With only 15 hours to spend in Charlotte NC, the decision had to be just right… after all it was one meal.  So here goes…

A simple web search turned up Pinky’s Westside Diner. There were many restaurants on the search, but Pinky’s stood out, why? Well Pinky’s had been featured on the food network TV show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Pinky’s was 3 1/2 miles from the intrepid traveler’s hotel, and he walked there and back. No one ever said my husband is intelligent. He reports that the Asian pork burger and the black eyed pea salad were well worth the effort.

Pinky’s was indeed a “dive” and a foodie paradise. To enhance their social proof and live up to all they hype, the servers could recount hte exact foods featured on the show and had an in depth knowledge of the menu.

Remember, you can “make up” social proof, but if someone is relying on it… then arrives at your business and encounter a different experience, OH BOY – that’s wrong on many levels.  Don’t “make up” proof — instead, celebrate it by advertising it, prominently displaying on your website, mentioning it on your staff T-shirts, and just like Pinky’s did… get your staff to KNOW the knowledge… like the menu items featured on the show!

Not everyone has social proof as terrific as Pinky’s, but we can all emphasize our social proof and make sure the staff can promote it, just like Pinky’s.

His last piece of advice, “Try the Asian pork burger, it’s delicious!”

Social Proof is one of those things that makes a difference.  It’s a tribe builder.

Here’s a funny scenario and you might be guilty of both sides of it.

You bring your car into get fixed and complain about the cost of a repair exclaiming that $150 an hour is outrageous.   Or maybe the same situation but you’re bewildered at an attorney charging $400 an hour.

Remember. You’re not paying for this hour… you’re paying for the 20,000 hours of study, training, tradeoff’s, and EXPERIENCE that the mechanic or attorney have accumulated to that moment.

You might have this internal struggle as you create your own pricing, especially if you creating a handmade product or offering a service.  The struggle comes from when someone complains about your pricing. 🙂

But you need to get paid what you are worth… and that doesn’t mean what you’re worth today – but what your experience is from over the years.

NOW… this is the tricky part because when we do email marketing we say create a freemium!  Do work and put it together in a PDF or video and give it for free!

Here’s the deal, it’s not exactly free. You are getting compensated, and I don’t mean with future sales, although that is the goal.  You are getting compensated, it’s just not a currency exchange it’s an email exchange.

The reason I wanted to spend time on this issue is to show it’s value.  You want to create the “freemium” but you haven’t because you’re worried about putting your expertise “out there” for free… don’t get caught up in the “free” part –  yes you are sharing some pretty amazing information – but you are doing this to acquire and grow your tribe.

Remember building credibility among your customers is a great way to improve loyalty and transform them into a strong tribe.

That means… today you should create your freemium and get it out there for your future tribe members to learn from your expertise!

Yesterday I ended my day by balancing our cash register.  I found a penny from 1954.   I started my day on a tour of our local Amazon Fulfillment center… fascinated by the robots.

OK… let me get this out of my system

Robots are freekin cool.

OMG.  If you’ve ever thought about automating your business – then visiting a company tour where they’ve done this is like an amusement park for your mind.

The products come in the door, there are plenty of humans to support the robots — but dang.  They just keep going – I kind expected the Energizer Bunny to pop from around the corner banging that drum!

He did not… but here’s the deal.

The tour was great.

I saw the future… here now.

I saw the possibilities of how to make the future happen now.

AND I also got a photo and water bottle.

My cousin invited me to go on this tour… I joked, the last tour we went on together was in 2nd grade.  Our elementary school was 2 blocks from Tonka Toys… every child received a cute doonbuggy for visiting.

Amazon had awesome water bottles!

OK – not that that’s the reason to visit or even have a tour.

But they built this facility as a showcase for the tour.  Here’s why it’s important for you to learn from Amazon on our Big Money Small Change Day… the first stop on the tour was a hallway.  It was outside a class room.

That’s when the tour guide, Tony, told us about the education benefit for being an Amazon employee… it’s VERY good. Then he told us about the maternity benefit… it also is VERY good.

WHY do they do this?

Because they love their company and those on a tour are potential employees.

The tour is your showcase of your business.

When the tour ended we learned an interesting historical reference and symbolic tribute to the founder that is in every building.  It was cool.

Then we went downstairs and they had a photo booth set up.  This how they encouraged social sharing.

Why?

Because cameras are NOT allowed on the tour.  Yet… they did not miss out on this important social opportunity.

Now… you are not Amazon, so what can you learn from this?

Showcase your business.  You can showcase it online.  Share your history.  Share your future.  Share a gift… and by all means include a way to share it on social media.

Look what I found… a super easy, simple, and effective idea!  Grab a frame and put your advertisement inside.

That’s easy!

This was the bathroom at the hair salon I visited recently… it’s for some product they sell on the other side of the wall.

This is a cool memory recall idea.  Often you see this type of nice advertisement in a magazine, but you flip the page and forget about it…

Well, this framed ad has a unique advantage, you leave the restroom turn the corner and must see the product!

What a great opportunity, create your ad, put it in your ad in a frame that matches your style… then… make sure to have that actual product in the walking path of your customers!
