ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode 500 – Help Someone Find You

“The moon is the first milestone on the road of the stars.” Arthur C Clarke

Saturday: Try This!

Which way are you coming from?

There used to be a time when people would call and ask for directions.  This relied on your staff having to give directions and your customer having to understand the directions.

NOW… “Hey Siri” or a Search gets you where you need to go.  I thought driving was the main source of automated directions, until I saw the new directories at the Mall of America.

Not only do you see where the store is… it has an animated arrow to guide you!

img_5123

It might be impossible to give your customers a guided arrow, however, what can you give them?  Bring someone with you, jump in your car, and film the journey from the main highway to your business.  Get out of the car and film the walk from car, to elevator, to front desk.

Prospective customers will appreciate this!

They are used to Google or Siri… but they can’t be everywhere (yet) – so help your customers find you!  Film the journey.  We did this at the boat yard… super helpful for first time visitors.

Try This!

ProfitCenterCoach.com – E493 – Ho HO Whole Lot of Money

“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.”

Friday: Big Money Small Change

Ho Ho HO!  It’s October 26 and we’re ready for Christmas!

But it’s not even Halloween yet?  Are we rushing it?

Well today is “Big Money Small Change” Day and that means we look for easy ways to make more money that do not cost a whole lot… I like to focus on things you’re doing at your small business, especially things that are done online.

Today, I’m sharing a post from… October 5!  Twenty-one days ago!  Imagine Santa and a big belly howl, “Merry Christmas”!  Along with the “ta da” music.

If you think October 26 is too early for your Christmas Promotions to begin… you are actually twenty-one days behind this ad!

Now, I like the ad… because I like cookies… but look at how cute the cookies are!

img_5254.png

The photo is very easy to understand, you see the rolling pin… it matches the pattern in the cookie.  There are absolutely no directions!  The ad implies it’s really that easy…

But for us we are less concerned with the functionality of the product and more concerned with the metrics of the ad!  It was placed October 6th!  It now takes somewhere around 12+ “touches” to get a response out of your customers… meaning they need to see your ad 12 times before it breaks through the “noise” of their world and they take action.

Do you really want to wait until after December 1st… or after Thanksgiving… or After Halloween?

NO — just like today’s inspiration states… If you want opportunities, you’ve got to be ready!  This rolling pin seller is READY!

It’s your turn… GET READY, NOW!

ProfitCenterCoach.com – Episode 443 – Good Times 10!

“The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself.” Peter F. Drucker

Thursday: Infinity Customer

It’s VERY hot outside. You just took your dog for a walk with the sun beating down on you.  You’re sweaty, hot, dusty, cranky, and tired.  You open the door to your house and the air conditioner is out.  It’s thick stale air. Perfect for that refreshing mug of… hot chocolate.

WHAT?

Tribe building is exactly like that mug of hot chocolate.  While you are correct that your tribe wants something to drink… you need to make sure it’s what THEY want to drink!  After a walk a refreshing glass of water would be excellent.  Hot chocolate better suited for the late fall football game.

Our goal with the Infinity Marketing Machine is to build a tribe that we can market products to that they will buy.

I started to read a great book today – it’s called Expert Secrets.  The book highlights how entrepreneurs use tribe building to their advantage.  Now, I’m not sure it’s for you, but… I’ve found it’s message very inspiring for small business owners ready to carve their own path in this new marketing world!  If that sounds like you, give it a peek… there’s even an offer to grab it for free if you just pay for the shipping.  Kinda cool eh?

That book is the type of product you want because you’re part of my tribe!  My goal with this blog is to gather people that are interested in learning how to build a tribe!

On the other hand, if I told you all about the perfect “resume boot camp 3-day experience” where you learn how to tweak your resume to guarantee you a new job by Friday, it’s no different than giving our summer dog walker a cup of hot chocolate.  You have a business, you are a business owner, there is no purpose to develop a “perfect resume” to have a new job by Friday.

It’s a great offer, but to my readers it’s a “bad” offer.  Does that make sense?

Making a perfect tribe/info match is like cookies and milk.  Cookies are good and milk is good, but put them together and it’s good times 10!

When you have a tribe and you offer them something they want… WOW!  That’s Good times 10.

I successfully tested this process with an offer to my boaters.  I suggested “aqua water mats” to them in an email. The result?  I made $1,800 in two hours because it was a perfect product for my tribe.

You can do this too… just really get to know your audience and offer cool refreshing water, or hot chocolate, just make sure you’re thinking “cookies and milk” when you do it!

UGH I think I’m hungry.

“Listen to anyone with an original idea, no matter how absurd it may sound at first.”— William McKnight, 3M

Friday: Big Money Small Change

Ring…Ring… – it’s 7:28am, who on earth?  Yep. My dad was calling.  It’s one of the perks of a family business, “Hi dad…” – no hello, no how’s it going… just, “Where is the life caulk?”

This was the good part of the conversation. Incase you’re wondering, Life Caulk is a brand of waterproof sealant for boats, our guys in the repair shop we’re looking for some.

My conversation continued into…
Where is the life caulk?
Is it in a box?
Where is the box?
What else is in the box?

I’m like… “Dad there is no box… if the life caulk is not next to the silicone seal, we are out” – oh my, it’s like I killed his cat… (that was a joke, he doesn’t have a cat and doesn’t like cats) – but he went totally deep end about being out of life caulk.

End result.  I reorganized and re merchandised our store in May and he still is not comfortable in it… but he does like the increase in sales, well if there’s life caulk! haha

For 20 years we had the same products displayed in our store.  It was a product mix geared toward weekend warriors that fix boats.  Well, our main foot traffic no longer does this.  20 years ago we had 6 pontoon boats for rent, now we have 15.  20 years ago we didn’t have a boat club, now we have 60 members.   We have many more people that are not boat owners and rather are visitors of our area.

This change has brought us into souvenirs! (While keeping life caulk)

The photo on the left is from late June.  I took the photo on the right yesterday… look there are empty spaces!!!  There’s no more stock “in back”.  The reason this is exciting is because it really is big money from a small change.  All we did was realize our foot traffic changed and then we purchased products they desired!

It’s time to take a look at what you’re doing and evaluate if it makes sense in your current situation.  You may be offering a product that no longer matches your customer base… take a minute and analyze this.

Who are your customers and what do they want?  Apparently at 7:28 am they want life caulk!  UGHHHH ok, I’m done.

Episode #403 – Is It a Comfortable Wait?

“Just sit back, relax, and do things to impress”

Time for Big Money Small change!  And I’m going to ask you to sit down… No not there… sit in the place your customers sit.

Have you ever checked out the view from your customers perspective?  It’s rare, right?!  We spend so much time just making out business “go” that we forget to “stop” and see what it’s like from their vantage.

The following are two photos I took from a Marina tour I was on last winter.  OH gosh, I love to say winter and have it snow free… the marina is in Florida.  But that’s why you’ll see Christmas decorations in the background.

I like looking at these two photos because they’re both sitting areas… they’re both at the same Marina… but you get an entirely different vibe from the chairs!

Who Knew?!?!

I’m sure you could “flip flop” the chairs with the scenery and it would be fine, your customers could take a rest and enjoy the view.  But the VIBE would be completely different.

This is such an important concept.  We want customers to sit, relax, and spend time with us.  This is not about taking any old chair and throwing it in the corner.  Use the opportunity to create an experience.  This doesn’t have to cost a lot… but the impression can be huge.

Think about the waiting area at your dentist office compared to the waiting area at your auto repair shop. Both are functional. Both allow you to sit and wait… but do they impress?

Remember, you want your customers to feel comfortable and like you want them to visit, but why not “wow” them at the same time?!

Episode #392 – Sign On The Dotted Line

Saturday Try This!

Sometimes the best ideas are super simple!

In all fairness, I got this idea from a marina training I attended last fall… but it’s so outstanding.  We have many services that are contract based for our business.  Now imagine this, you can make this big purchase and simply sign.

OR

You can make this big purchase and receive an engraved pen that you use to sign the contract.  It’s a very simple idea and it’s very effective.  We actually use a pen/pencil set but they are engraved with our “Our Boating home is (marina name) National Marina of the Year”.  It’s a great way to welcome people and share the good news of our award!

This is also a great way to help you build your tribe!  All the way around it helps to relax our customers as they make this big purchase.

Episode #355 – When a Selfie Isn’t Good Enough

I know from the back stage tours and seminars I’ve taken from Disney Institute that they do not designate a particular “spot” as a photo stop.  Their reasoning is that everyone would stop in that one area and it would get congested. The next time you walk down Main Street notice all of the people taking photos in front of Cinderella’s Castle, and you’ll see their point.

Tons of people area taking photos!

Well, if you’re experiencing the same foot traffic as Disney World you can ignore the rest of the post… and congrats!  That’s pretty amazing… but for the rest of us, why not create a spot.

Here’s a beautiful area at the Sheraton in San Diego!  Now I’m a little bias due to the background of Safe Harbor Marina… beautiful marina and nice office staff (thanks for the hat!) — anyway, this area is clearly for guests to stop and have their photo taken.

Here’s the nice part, it fits in to the area.  It’s right along side of the sidewalk, and the hedge prevents you from stepping back too far and falling down the hill into the water.  There’s no sign that says “watch out for drop off” and there’s no ugly fence.  You know exactly what the area is for!  It’s a neat little attractive place to stop for a photo.

With so many people taking photos, figure out a place you can create a photo stop.  Don’t think your business is a “photo taking” type of business… create a hashtag and encourage visitors to post.  This could be as simple as a photo stop at the main entrance with the sign in the background… BTW, this doesn’t have to be a major destination, but you never know… it just might become one.

PS: Offer to take a photo of your visitors… when is the last time you had someone offer to take a photo for you?  I mean, sometimes a selfie isn’t good enough.

Try This.

Episode #349 – A New Twist on Branding!

Saturday Try This!

How can you surprise your customers? There are a thousand answers for your one business… but when I was at the ESPN restaurant at Disney… my chicken sandwich became that “wow moment” because it was branded!

How cool is this?!?!

It was not a “buffalo” themed sandwich… the restaurant is not western themed restaurant… and yet, my sandwich had the ESPN brand right on it! I wasn’t expecting it to be branded.  If the sandwich had a non-branded bun I would not have missed it — BUT, by taking that little extra effort, it made my sandwich special!

What happens with a special sandwich? It causes a conversation… I mean look!  You were not at my lunch table… yet you’re experiencing it!  You get to see this very cool sandwich and you can comment on it!

One brand… turns into one photo… turns into a blog post… turns into a “try this” idea… that causes countless other people to think of how they can adapt this type of “WOW moment” at their business… all from one chef deciding to brand a bun on a sandwich.  That’s pretty “impactful”!

Episode #306 – How Many Photos is Enough?

“Everyone who’s ever taken a shower has an idea.  It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference.” ~Nolan Bushnell

Don’t want to spend a lot of money… but want a big impact?  Create a photo book!

We used these photo books at the Minneapolis Boat Show!  They are wonderful.  Our crew member put a lot of time into them… and you know what… they were worth every minute!  They tell a story, well not A story – they tell OUR story.

Here’s the funny part, we did not take photos for the books.  We had great photos and decided that a photo book would be a great tool to help sell our services!

In Minnesota we have a difficulty with winter and boating… we market our services, but when there is 2 feet of snow on the ground it’s hard to get a great idea of what we do.  Some customers can visualize it, but others… can’t.  That’s when we bring summer to the customer via flip books.

It’s super easy to make a great book online.  The reason I mention this idea is because we needed to plan ahead and get great photos of our services so we could use them in the winter.

As a Big Money Small Change idea – take photos, and take a lot more!  You never know when you’ll need them… but it’s much better to have them when the idea comes to you!

It may be a good idea to hire a photographer.  Smart phone camera are great, but there’s something about a professional photographer way of seeing things that becomes helpful!  Again, you might not know why you’ll need these photos… but you’ll be happy you have them!

Episode #299 -Talk to One… Even If It’s A Group

“Even when you are marketing to your entire audience or customer base, you are still simply speaking to a single human at any given time.” Ann Handley

Did you catch that?

The whole goal of marketing is to speak to one customer at a time but do it in an efficient manner! Remember this when you are creating a message.

Sure you’re placing the ad in the newspaper… so you might not be able write a customer’s name at the top, however, you can use imagery and words that evoke emotions that individual customers identify with.

This is the advantage of the Infinity Marketing Machine.  Your goal is to nurture the customer by maintaining regular contact via email. Then you provide products and services your customers desire!  This is a little different from finding people to buy your products… you already have an active group of people on your list so the goal is to “talk” to their desires.

Boom.

Speak to them as individuals!  Another way to help enhance this concept is to build your database by tagging, categorizing, or marking the record of each customer.  You need to know the difference in profit centers. This helps you to identify the next product or service they’ll desire. The more characteristics you can identify and associate with their record in your database, the better bond you can build with your customers!
